Early Introduction To Prevent Peanut Allergy

In 2015, the Learning Early About Peanut Allergy study found that introducing peanut early to infants may prevent peanut allergy. The study showed that the group of at-risk infants who ate 2 grams of peanut three times a week had significantly less allergy to peanuts at 5 years of age compared with infants who avoided peanut.

Based on this study and others, an expert panel of doctors, scientists and public health experts created new guidelines on how to introduce peanut to infants. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases released new guidelines in January 2017.

    Why Are Goldfish Not Vegan

Why Goldfish Are Not Vegan Put simply, Goldfish are not vegan. Each and every flavor of Goldfish contains at least one non-vegan ingredient made from an animal product, which effectively strikes them off the vegan-friendly food options list. The ingredient found in all the flavors is a type of fish oil called docosahexaenoic acid, which is derived from the omega 3 fatty acids found naturally in fish.

DHA is an essential fatty acid that is essential for the development of the brain and nervous system, as well as the immune system. It also plays a role in the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. In addition, it has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

This is why it is used to treat a variety of inflammatory conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, psoriasis, lupus, Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease , and many others.

Kellogg’s announced plans earlier this year to add peanut flour to some previously peanut-free snacks, leaving fewer options for parents scrambling for quick and cheap snacks safe to bring along for trips, parties, and other events. While many consumers prefer fresh fruit, such as apples, bananas, and oranges, to packaged snacks, it’s not always convenient or affordable. Buying in bulk or making snacks at home and filling individual bags can save money, but not all parents are comfortable with food that isn’t labeled or certified as allergen-free. With these concerns in mind, here are 11 tasty, peanut-free snacks kids will love.

Clarification: Manufacture Of Pepperidge Farm Goldfish With Regard To Peanuts And Tree Nuts

Once again, weve received a spate of worried messages like this one recently:

    From: JSSubject: GoldFish

I have called Pepperidge Farm several times over the past couple of days and have been told over and over again that they do not have dedicated lines and the regular gold fish is manufactured on shared lines with tree nuts.

I think your list should be updated. I dont think they are safe anymore.

First, let me say that we truly appreciate the feedback we receive from our readers regarding the items on our Safe Snack Guide, especially those preceded by a black dot. Those are legacy items from companies that are not members of our Manufacturer Partnership, and as such we do not have direct relationships with them that require notification when they change their processes. We resort to contacting them periodically as you do.

But weve been around this block before with Pepperidge Farm, whose consumer line employees dont seem to be clued in to the specifics regarding their Goldfish products.

So we reached out to Ellen Passero, Quality Director for the firm and asked her to clarify for us as she did back in December. Her reply, received Saturday, August 5, 2017 is as follows:

    So, to summarize:

Our thanks to Ms Passero for clarifying for us once again.

We will follow up here once we receive information regarding the disconnect between Pepperidge Farms consumer line and the facts behind the manufacture of their products.

Update: Manufacture Of Pepperidge Farm Goldfish With Respect To Peanuts And Tree Nuts

As our readers know, we partner directly with over 100 companies to have them disclose precisely how they process 11 allergens during the manufacture of their products including shared line and facility information. In return, the company receives free listings in our publications: the Safe Snack Guide and Allergence product screening service.

There are a few popular products we keep tabs on where we do not have a formal relationship with the company. One of those is the Goldfish line of snacks from Pepperidge Farm, a unit of the Campbells Soup Company.

The last time we checked in with the company was late 2017, so it was high time to touch base to see if anything about their manufacturing practices has changed with regard to peanuts and tree nuts.

We reached out to our contacts at Pepperidge Farm and received the following reply from Bethridge Toovell, Associate Director, Communications for the company:

So to summarize, all Goldfish cracker and cookie products:

    • Are manufactured in peanut-free facilities
    • Are manufactured on dedicated tree-nut free lines in facilities that are not guaranteed to be tree nut-free.

Once again, we thank Ms Toovell and Campbells for their response.
