Can Pets Be Allergic to People?

There are common strategies to help you reduce allergens from cats, such as the following tips:

  • Dont let cats in your bedroom. Its better to keep this space as dander-free as possible.
  • Wash your hands after touching cats to make sure you dont transfer allergens onto yourself.
  • Remove carpets and clean walls frequently. It is easier to keep wooden or tile flooring dander-free. Regular cleaning of walls will help reduce allergens.
  • Cover heating and air vents with a filtering material, such as cheesecloth, so that cat hair doesnt get into the vents.
  • Install a whole-house air filter, preferably a high-efficiency particulate absorbing filter.
  • Change filters on air conditioning units and furnaces frequently.
  • Keep the humidity level in your home at about 40 percent. This makes it difficult for allergens to travel in the air.
  • Vacuum weekly with a HEPA filter vacuum.
  • Use a face mask while dusting or cleaning to prevent allergens from traveling to your lungs.

Can Pet Allergies Develop Later In Life

It sounds crazy, but imagine waking up one day in your 40s with allergy symptoms. You look around your house for the culprit. Maybe its the houseplants or maybe you left a window open.

Youve always kept your cat and dog in the house without a problem so you know the symptoms arent from your pets. Or are they?

If this sounds familiar, youre not alone. 10 percent of Americans are allergic to household pets and cats are 2x more likely to cause allergies than other indoor pets . Like other allergies, those caused by pets are on the rise!

Interestingly, pet allergies can develop later in life. In fact, they can develop at any time and allergies can even vanish on their own too.

In the sections below, Ill share my experience with pet allergies and the reactions I began getting at age 30. We will also discuss what can cause allergies later in life and what you can do to find relief.

The Immune Systems Response To Allergies

There are many substances that have the potential to become allergens. You can inhale or ingest them while some can enter through your skin.

In cases of allergic reactions like hay fever, hives, and forms of asthma, the immune system releases antibodies called immunoglobulin E, or IgE. IgE antibodies are specific to a certain allergen and react only when exposed to that antigen. For example, a person may be allergic to certain plant pollen, but not to another.

When the body first comes in contact with an allergen, it releases a significant amount of IgE. Upon second exposure to the same allergen, you may experience an allergic reaction. The symptoms of the reaction can include a runny, stuffy nose, watery and swollen eyes, sneezing, coughing, and itchy skin.

The severity of the symptoms varies from no symptoms to life-threatening anaphylaxis. It depends on the type of allergy, the amount of exposure to the allergen, and how the immune system responds to that substance.

Allergies are more common in children. The most common allergies in children are food, like peanuts and shellfish, and stings. Some children do outgrow these allergies and dont experience symptoms later in life.

Although, some people may develop allergies later in life instead of outgrowing them.

Can Allergies Go Away With Time

The short answer is yes.

Even if you develop allergies as an adult, you may notice they start to fade again when you reach your 50s and beyond.

This is because your immune function is reduced as you get older, so the immune response to allergens also becomes less severe.

Some allergies you have as a child may also go away when youre a teen and well into your adulthood, perhaps making only a few appearances throughout your life until they disappear permanently.

A New Cat In Adulthood Can Up Your Allergy Risk

— According to a new study published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, getting a cat for the first time as an adult can nearly double your chances of developing allergies to the cat dander.

The new study, led by Dr. Mario Olivieri from the University Hospital of Verona in Italy, looked at 6,000 adult Europeans over the course of nine years. At the beginning of the study, all participants received blood tests to look for sensitivity to animal dander. None of the participants had this sensitivity at the beginning of the study.

Over the course of nine years, about three percent of the participants that did not have a cat developed sensitivity to dander. Of those that did acquire a cat, five percent developed an allergy.

Of those that developed a sensitivity, four out of 10 also experienced allergy symptoms such as wheezing, itchy eyes and sneezing.

The study also looked at adults who had cats as children. The results showed that these individuals had a much smaller risk of developing sensitivity. Getting a cat as a child can prove to be protective against developing allergies later in adulthood.

However, the interesting part of this study revealed that where your cat lives and spends his time can also make a difference in the development of an allergy. Those cat owners who did not allow their cats into their bedroom did not become sensitized at all.

Cat Allergies May Be Linked To Venomous Primate

Adore your cat but struggling with Allergies?

A recent study investigated whether planet Earths only venomous primate could help us understand why so many people are allergic to cats. The researchers believe that cat allergies might be the result of an ancient defense mechanism.

In the United States, cat allergies affect an estimated 12.1% of people over the age of 6 years. Symptoms include itchy eyes, a runny nose, coughing, sneezing, and wheezing.

Most commonly, the allergic reaction to cats is a response to a protein called FEL D1. All cats produce FEL D1 in their saliva and release it from certain glands. They spread this protein all over their body as they lick themselves.

New research by scientists from the University of Queensland in Australia might help explain why this allergy is so prevalent in humans. Their work focuses on one of natures most unusual mammals the slow loris.
