Can Allergies Cause Mouth Ulcers

What Do Mouth Ulcers Look Like

How to get fast relief from Mouth ulcers? – Dr. Aarthi Shankar

Mouth ulcers are mostly round or oval and can affect the mouth, lips, or cheeks.2 They can be white, yellow, grey, or red and may appear swollen.

A mouth ulcer may start as a single ulcer and stay in the same state until it goes away. However, they can multiply in the mouth, but most mouth ulcers are harmless.

Mouth ulcers can sometimes be confused with cold sores. Cold sores are small blisters that appear on the lips or around the mouth. They start with a tingling and burning sensation.

However, canker sores may not be painful until they are triggered by certain foods such as citrus or acidic fruits and vegetables.

Mouth ulcers are typically under 5mm wide, and some may join together to form one large one.

Some types of mouth ulcers appear on the soft tissues of the mouth, such as:

  • The sides of the tongue
  • On the walls of the cheeks
  • The area around the tonsils
  • Under the tongue

What Are The Clinical Features Of Contact Stomatitis

The symptoms and signs of acute contact stomatitis usually develop within hours of contact with the allergen. The chronic form occurs when the allergen is always in the mouth such as with a dental restoration.

The pattern will depend on what form the allergen is in. For example, if the allergen is in a removable dental prosthesis, the pattern will reflect the shape and area of contact between the prosthesis and the oral mucosa. The reaction may be generalised when due to toothpaste or mouthwash. Stomatitis due to dental restoration or orthodontic devices will be adjacent to the restored tooth or wires.

All parts of the mouth can be affected. However, the most common sites involved in contact stomatitis are:

  • Sides of the tongue
  • Inside of the cheeks

Contact stomatitis has a number of possible clinical features that may occur in various combinations. These include:

  • White patches or lines

A lichenoid amalgam reaction is also a form of contact stomatitis and is a type of oral lichen planus.

Plasma cell gingivitis is another specific form of contact stomatitis.

Contact urticaria and oral allergy syndrome are type 1 hypersensitivity reactions and occur and recover more quickly than contact stomatitis.

Diet Can Play A Role In Canker Sore Development

Certain foods are known triggers. These include salty foods and spicy foods, as well as acidic drinks and foods, such as oranges, lemons, tomatoes, and pineapples.

A low intake of certain vitamins and nutrients folic acid, zinc, iron may also bring about canker sores.

Research suggests that supplemental intake of vitamin B12 can help reduce the incidence of mouth ulcers. In a 2009 study, 58 people with recurrent canker sores were given 1,000 micrograms of vitamin B12 at bedtime for six months. The study found that after supplementing with the vitamin, 74 percent of participants no longer had sores at the end of treatment.

The person will be very ill and have swelling around the eyes.People with chronic sinusitis may have other problems which affect the nose, throat and ears at the same time, including:

What Causes Canker Sores In Your Mouth

Canker sore in mouth

Canker sores are commonly caused by trauma like biting the inside of your cheek, burns, allergies, or sensitivities. They may have other causes as well. However, canker sores are not contagious.

Certain conditions may make you more prone to them. These can include:

  • a weakened immune system because of illness or stress
  • hormone changes, such as menstruation
  • a vitamin deficiency, especially of folate and B12

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex type 1 virus . Outbreaks may also be accompanied by mild, flu-like symptoms, such as low fever, body aches, and swollen lymph nodes.

This virus can be dormant inside of your body. Sores may appear when the virus reactivates and last for weeks, according to 2021 research. This can occur when the immune system is weak or during times of stress.

Outbreaks are more common if you:

  • are under stress
  • are ill or have a weakened immune system
  • have had too much sun exposure
  • have a break in the skin of your mouth

The virus that causes cold sores is contagious and can be spread through contact with cold sores. It can be spread through kissing, sharing food, or sharing cosmetics. It is also possible to catch HSV-1 when sores cannot be seen.

Genital herpes, caused by the herpes simplex type 2 virus , can look similar in appearance to cold sores. Both viruses may be spread through sex without a condom or other barrier method if you or your partner has an active outbreak.

Routine Blood Tests And Urinalysis

Its very likely that your veterinarian may carry out blood work, including the usual panel of diagnostic tests, such as hematology and biochemistry profiles. With mouth ulcers, typically there may not be many abnormalities, but it is still important to check.

Systemic illness that can contribute to mouth ulcers will be ruled out because the blood parameters reflecting these areas of the body will usually be normal indicating that your cats health is generally good.

Urinalysis will be carried out as with many other sick cats, as part of a general investigation as a routine part of good veterinary medicine.

Postnasal drip can leave you with a raw and aching throat. Although it may start as an annoying tickle, it can get worse.

Over The Counter Treatments:

You can buy antibacterial or pain-killing mouthwash to rinse the ulcers with. This will keep them clean and will hopefully prevent the spread of infection.

Certain anesthetic agents may also be useful. These usually come in cream or gel form and should be administered directly to the ulcer with clean hands. Always read the label to see guidelines for use.

These treatments should help ulcers heal and reduce irritation, but they wont necessarily stop them from returning. As mentioned above, continual recurrence might indicate an underlying health issue.

    What Doesnt Cause Canker Sores

Canker sores arent contagious you cant get a sore from kissing someone, sharing food or drinks, or touching another persons lesions.

Cold sores produce oral lesions, too. But unlike a canker sore, cold sores are contagious, warns Samantha Rawdin, DMD, a prosthodontist based in New York City. Cold sores or fever blisters are caused by the herpes virus, which doesnt cause canker sores.

In addition, recurrent cold sores occur outside of the mouth and dont form on the keratinized tissues of the oral area like canker sores, Dr. Rawdin adds.

Can An Allergy Cause Mouth Ulcers

Given the lack of any cast iron cause many people a left scratching their heads as to what might be causing these recurring mouth ulcers. As someone who has been afflicted by various allergic reactions over the years I thought it might be worth investigating whether allergies might be a possible cause.

What I found was it is possible for various sensitivities, intolerances and indeed allergies to cause mouth ulcers, although the latter are the least likely. The main culprits are sensitivities, particularly to acidic foods such as strawberries, tomatoes and pineapple, spicy foods and other triggers like chocolate and coffee. However, it is very unusual for an allergic reaction to cause the level of erosion seen in ulcers, but not completely unknown. Generally speaking the symptoms of a food allergy affecting the mouth are limited to tingling and itching.

A known example of an allergen that is capable of causing mouth ulcers is Balsam of Peru, a plant extract that is commonly used as a fragrance and flavouring in a range of products. Rated one of the top 5 allergens throughout dermatology clinics, oral contact with Balsam of Peru can cause mouth ulcers in allergic individuals.

The Truth Behind Allergy Medicines And Their Impact On Oral Health

Throughout the year, plenty of medications found on drug store shelves are designed and marketed to provide relief to the eyes, nose, and throat. But what many people do not realize is many of these products contain ingredients that have a negative impact on teeth and oral soft tissues. Researchers have discovered that many of the problems that develop inside the mouth as a result of allergies are often attributed to the countless medications sold in stores. Antihistamines designed to treat allergies are known for causing dry mouth, which is a common cause of periodontal disease. When the mouth cannot produce adequate amounts of saliva, bacteria and harmful acids break down tooth enamel and attack gum tissue, resulting in tooth decay and gum disease.

Lozenges and syrups aimed to combat sore throat caused by post-nasal drip often contain high amounts of sugar. As a result, when consumed to minimize the pain associated with a sore throat, the sugars adhere to teeth, causing a breakdown of enamel over time. This can lead to cavity formations and more serious tooth pain that will require restorative treatment to fix.

    Apple Cider Vinegar Mouthwash

Apple cider vinegar is touted as a cure for almost everything, including canker sores. Its thought that the acid in ACV helps that irritate the sore. The treatment is controversial, however, because acidic foods can cause or worsen canker sores in some people. Use it with caution.

    To use:

  • Combine 1 tsp. of ACV and 1 cup of water.
  • Swish this mixture around your mouth for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  • Spit it out, and rinse your mouth thoroughly.
  • Many websites suggest applying ACV directly to the canker sore with a cotton swab. This approach may speed up healing time in some people, but for others, it could cause additional pain and irritation.

Either way, its important to rinse your mouth after using ACV to prevent damage to tooth enamel.
