Can You Get Over An Allergy

The Effect Of The Weather

What to expect when you go get tested for allergies

The amount of sunshine, rain or wind affects how much pollen plants release and how much it’s spread around. On humid and windy days, pollen spreads easily. On rainy days, pollen may be cleared from the air, causing pollen levels to fall.

During their pollen season, plants release pollen early in the morning. As the day gets warmer and more flowers open, pollen levels rise. On sunny days, the pollen count is highest in the early evening.

Immediate Action Required: Call 999 If:

  • you get a skin rash that may include itchy, red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin
  • you’re wheezing
  • you get tightness in the chest or throat
  • you have trouble breathing or talking
  • your mouth, face, lips, tongue or throat start swelling

You could be having a serious allergic reaction and may need immediate treatment in hospital.

Food Allergies Vs Food Intolerance: What Is The Difference

It is estimated that about a quarter of the population will have an adverse reaction to food during their lifetime, especially during infancy and early childhood.

Food allergies consist of an immune system response to a disagreeable food. The body senses that a protein in a particular food may be harmful and triggers an immune system response, producing histamine to protect itself. Histamine causes allergy symptoms such as hives, coughing and wheezing. The body then remembers this immunologic reaction and when the allergen food enters the body again, the histamine response is more easily triggered. The best characterized form of food allergy is mediated by food-specific IgE antibodies.

The diagnosis of food allergies may be problematic because nonallergic food reactions, such as food intolerances, are frequently confused with food allergy symptoms. Food allergies and intolerances are often linked, but theres a clear difference between the two conditions.

A food intolerance is the bodys digestive systems response to a disagreeable food. Unlike a food allergy, which produces an immunological mechanism after consuming an allergen, a food intolerance produces a non-immunological reaction. For example, a person may have digestive issues after drinking cows milk because she is unable to digest the sugar lactose this would be called a food intolerance. If she had an immunologic response to the cows milk, that would be characterized as a food allergy.

Best tips to prevent allergy

One potential method of reducing allergies is to use an elimination diet. This means that the person eliminates all of the allergens from their diet for a period of time, usually around two weeks.

After the elimination period, the person can reintroduce one allergen at a time and see how they react. This method can help identify which allergens are causing the allergies and allow for a more targeted approach to managing them.

What This Means For Pet Parents With Cat Allergies

The reality is that many people go through extreme efforts to manage allergies to keep their beloved feline in their home. While a number of those people are successful, a number are forced to re-home a cat if someone new to the household has an intolerable allergy.

These two studies and potential new products offer a glimpse of hope for cat-allergy sufferers.

As this research is still ongoing, I would anticipate the efficacy of this product only to improve.

Fighting the problem at the source, instead of alleviating the symptomsits so brilliant, and yet so simple. Its one of those times that I find myself wondering, Why didnt I think of that?

Purina Institute Cat Allergen Diet Study

The Swiss scientists arent the only ones to bring a cat de-allergenator to market: Purina Pro Plan LiveClear cat foods.

Purina has taken a different approach to tackling the Fel d1 protein. They are working to neutralize the allergen through a cats diet.

The company recently published a study explaining how an egg product ingredient can be introduced to a cats diet to help neutralize the major cat allergen, Fel d1.

The concept is similar to the vaccine, with the goal being to decrease levels of active Fel d1 found in cat saliva.

While Purinas study did not yet incorporate humans allergic response rates, an encouraging 86% of cats saw at least a 30% reduction from the baseline Fel d1 levels.

Think Before Getting A Cat

If you have cat allergies, please think twice before committing to getting and caring for a cat. Your allergies might affect them too.

If you need to limit contact with them or keep them quarantined in small areas of the house just to keep yours, or someone elses, allergies at bay, then you might not be able to give them the loving environment or attention they need and deserve.

Not everyone has this luxury, as allergies can develop long after a cat has been welcomed into your family. This can mean making the heart-wrenching decision to rehome your cat due to a cat dander allergy. Hopefully, these tips can help to prevent this.

Understand Your Pet Allergies

VERIFY: Yes, you can still get the COVID-19 vaccine if you have allergies

It is important to see a doctor and be tested to determine what allergies you actually have. You may find that you’re allergic to something else and not your pet at all! For example, you may assume that you are allergic to your beloved dog, only to find out through an allergy test that you’re actually allergic to a specific tree pollen that got on his fur during a walk together, and that’s actually what’s bothering you.

If an allergy test shows that you are allergic to your pet, it is important to understand what causes your allergic reaction to them. There are allergy-triggering proteins called allergens in saliva and skin glands that cling to an animal’s dry skin and fur. The fur and dander then stick to walls, carpets and clothing.

The reaction of someone to these allergens is different from one person to the next. The reaction may range from mild sniffling and sneezing to life-threatening asthma. The reaction can be made worse if a person is additionally exposed to other things he is allergic too, such as pollen, dust mites, cigarette smoke, and mold.

Whether someone has an allergic reaction depends on both the individual person and the individual animal. A person with animal allergies may react less to dogs with soft, constantly growing hair, or one specific cat or dog may cause more or less of an allergic reaction than another animal of that same breed.

When Is There Most Pollen

Different trees and plants produce their pollen at different times of the year. Depending on which type of pollen you’re allergic to, you may experience hay fever symptoms at different times.

In the UK, the pollen count season is usually separated into 3 periods:

  • tree pollen late March to mid-May
  • grass pollen mid-May to July
  • weed pollen end of June to September

However, the pollen count season can sometimes begin as early as January or end in November. For example, depending on the weather conditions, sometimes there can be an “early spring” or a “long summer”.

A Hallmark Of Allergies Is Itchiness

Allergies typically cause very itchy eyes, itchy nose, maybe even itchy skin.

An infection may be a little itchy or irritating as well, but this will be very minor compared to the significant congestion, cough and other symptoms that they are having, Dr. Kim says.

In other words, with allergies, one of the most common symptoms is itchiness, while in infections such as RSV, itchiness in the eyes and nose can occur but other symptoms such as congestion and cough are most noticeable. For example, in a child with allergies what will be most noticeable will be how much they are rubbing his or her eyes and nose and sniffling and clearing their throat. With infections, they might rub their nose a little, but it will be the significant congestion and coughing, as well as fever, that will be most noticeable.

What Is An Allergy

Allergic reactions occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign object in your body. In response, your body creates immunoglobulin E antibodies. Once these antibodies are in your system, they attach to your skin, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract. When you encounter that particular allergen again, the antibodies release histamine, which dilates blood vessels. This causes an allergic reaction.

When you have an allergic reaction, some of the symptoms may include:

If you believe you or someone know is experiencing anaphylaxis, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Can Exposure Cure Allergies

Drug Allergy

What are allergies?

An allergen is something that ones body recognizes as foreign. For example, a child with a peanut allergy recognizes peanut protein as a foreign substance, which triggers the immune system to defend the body. This is why symptoms such as itchiness, hives, tongue and throat swelling, vomiting or inability to breathe may happen.

While people can outgrow some allergies, such as dairy, egg, wheat and soy, others have a much lower chance of being outgrown, such as shellfish, tree nut or peanut. Allergies are a major inconvenience and can have extreme effects if not managed properly. But is it possible to slowly diminish your allergies or get rid of them completely?

Does immunotherapy work?

Immunotherapy is exposing a person to an allergen to try to alter the immune system, so the person no longer responds to the allergen in an adverse way. By training your body to accept an allergen, it is possible to develop a tolerance to avoid adverse reactions.

What are some examples?

For food-related allergies, such as peanut, soy, dairy or wheat, parents are encouraged to introduce highly allergenic foods to infants and children with no history of allergies early. If the child has a history of atopic dermatitis and/or a family history of food allergy, talk to your childs doctor before introducing allergenic foods.

Can Cats Eat French Fries

Keeping a cat as a pet causes your body to release oxytocin, the love hormone, which is released in your body when you fall in love. But you can only enjoy these benefits if your cat is in good health and is happy.

This means that you have to ensure that whatever you feed your cat is safe for it and has all the necessary nutrients. So, before you throw those tasty French fries into your cats bowl, think twice.

Sometimes your cat will accidentally nibble at your French fries when you leave them on the table unattended, or you might think youre treating your loyal kitty by sharing your French fries with it.

But is it okay to give your cat French fries? While its not dangerous to give your cat French fries, there are certain critical exceptions that you need to be informed about.

When taken in small quantities, cooked French fries wont harm your cat, but they might cause gastrointestinal distress. However, uncooked French fries arent safe for your cat because they contain toxins that can cause serious health complications.

So, its important to ensure that your French fries are properly cooked before you eat them or give them to your cat.

Since French fries are made from Russet which contain a toxic substance that can put the health of your cat at risk. This glycoalkaloid substance is known as solanine and its mainly concentrated in the green areas of the potato plant.

So, your fries should be cooked thoroughly to make them safe for you and your cat.

Animal Hair Fur And Feathers

Pets can cause problems for allergic patients in several ways. Their dander , saliva and urine can cause an allergic reaction, especially when combined with household dust. In households with birds, feathers and bird droppings can also become embedded in household dust and cause problems for people who are allergic to them.

Hypopet Ag Vaccine Study

Allergy Medications Explained – Can You Take More Than One?

Scientists at a pharmaceutical company in Switzerland have announced the development of a conjugate vaccine called HypoCat that binds to and neutralizes the major cat allergen, Fel d1.

According to the studies recently performed, cats who received the HypoCat vaccine according to the protocol did indeed have lower levels of Fel d1 in the blood.

Although it is somewhat more subjective, the allergic humans involved in the study did show less allergic symptoms around the vaccinated cat compared to unvaccinated cats.

Due to the encouraging results, the Swiss company is moving ahead with registration studies and discussions to bring the vaccine to market in the US and Europe.

HypoPet is hoping to have their HypoCat vaccine on the market in 2022, and they also have a HypoDog vaccine in the pipeline too.

Can You Outgrow Your Allergies

Most people with allergies first develop them as children or infants. But as they age, some individuals seem to leave their hay fever, pet allergies or even food allergies behind.

Doctors don’t know exactly why, but people’s allergies actually can disappear over time. And even when they don’t disappear, allergies vary significantly.

The severity of allergic reactions differs widely among people, and even within the same individual, allergic reactions can change in severity from season to season and from allergen to allergen. For example, a neighbor’s cat might send you into a sneezing fit, while a different feline could provoke nary a reaction at all.

In general, doctors do know what causes allergies: Your immune system overreacts to a harmless substance. When functioning correctly, your body’s defenses attack foreign invaders, like viruses. With allergies, the immune system mistakenly targets pollen, pet dander or certain foods, for example, sending molecules called immunoglobulin E antibodies to orchestrate a “defense.”

In cases of disappearing allergies, some experts theorize that the person may simply grow accustomed to the allergen, thus reducing the level of immune-system sensitivity.

“Growing accustomed” seems important in allergies to food, particularly nuts. Some doctors have recently emphasized promoting tolerance to the food through low-level exposure that’s gradually increased.

Visit Friends With Cats

Choose to visit a friend with an outgoing cat to allow you to get up close and personal with a feline, but on a limited basis. Ask your friend to choose a time when the cat is fed, comfortable, and relaxed. Ask your friend permission to use an allergy relief spray or wipes on the cat if necessary while you’re visiting.

Use your allergy medication half an hour before the arranged time. When you arrive, let the cat set the pace. You may be greeted by being sniffed at your feet and legs at first. You can dangle your hand to see if the cat rubs up against it, which can indicate petting is acceptable. If your allergies are still under control, you might allow the cat to jump onto your lap. Make your visit about 15 minutes at the most to keep both you and the cat comfortable.

In another week or two, visit again with the same cat, and stay longer, up to half an hour. Begin to branch out and visit other friends with cats.

Can You Get Used To Cat Allergies

Many patients ask, Canât I just live with my cat? Wonât my immune system become tolerant because Im being exposed? Unfortunately, thats not the case. Because the amount of cat dander youre exposed to when a cat is in your environment varies. Oftentimes, the levels of allergens are high enough to cause your immune system to react. And if its responding to the allergen, its not becoming tolerant.

With immunotherapy, you start with a trace amount, and the body doesnt react. Gradually, your dose increases, building up your immune system until the body becomes desensitized.

Rid Your Home Of Other Allergens

Acupuncture & Allergies

If you’re considering bringing a new pet into your home, first rid your home of as many other allergens as possible, including mites, dust, and mold. Most airborne allergens cling to soft material such as curtains and drapes, upholstery, and floor coverings. Here are common ways to clear your home of allergens:

  • Substitute blinds for window coverings. If you rent, and can’t get permission to switch them, keep the curtains washed and frequently vacuum the drapes.
  • If possible, replace overstuffed upholstered furniture with leather.
  • Eliminate decorative scented candles, potpourri, and plug-in air fresheners, all of which can exacerbate allergy symptoms.
  • Consider replacing wall-to-wall carpeting with wood or tile floors. Otherwise, thoroughly vacuum carpeting regularly.
