Fish Oil Dosage For Dogs With Allergies

What Happens If Your Dog Is Allergic To Fish Oil?

The perfect amount of omega 3 fatty acids for dogs with skin allergies is not known. Super-high doses have been used by veterinarians to treat severe inflammatory diseases.

The dose recommended by researchers and veterinary dermatologists for dogs with allergies is approximately 25 mg of EPA+DHA per pound of body weight once a day. It may take a couple of months before you see a noticeable improvement in an itchy skin condition. See Table 2 below.

Remember to use the sum of EPA+DHA in milligrams to calculate the dose.

What Are Essential Fatty Acids

Dogs need to consume certain fats in their diet in order to survive. These are called essential fatty acids , meaning the animal cant manufacture these compounds in adequate amounts from other materials. EFAs must come from their diet.

Dogs have five EFAs they must obtain from food :

  • Alpha-linolenic acid
  • Arachidonic acid
  • Eicosapentaenoic acid
  • Docosahexaenoic acid

The term omega is a description of the fatty acids structure and not really necessary to understand for this discussion. You just need to understand that omega 6s are different from s but theyre both important.

A dogs body works best when he consumes a particular ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 EFAs. An excess of either one can cause health problems.

Scientists believe an optimum ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 is somewhere between 5:1 and 10:1.

Fish Oil Is Radioactive

If you give your dog fish oil from Pacific fish, beware. The Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster released radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean.

In a 2013 Stanford University study, Pacific fish tested positive for radioactive particles. Tuna was especially toxic, but salmon used to make fish oil has also tested positive. Radioactive substances like Cesium and Strontium can get into your dogs bone marrow. That can lead to bone cancer and leukemia.

Does Your French Bulldog Struggle With Environmental Allergies The Benefits Of Salmon Oil For Dogs With Allergies Are Pretty Amazing Keep Reading For Additional Info On How Salmon Oil May Be A Beneficial Supplement For Your Dog

French Bulldogs are known to have both food and skin allergies. If youre looking for a French Bulldog puppy, be sure to check out my blog post Question To Ask A Frenchie Breeder for tips on how to try and determine if your pup might be prone to having allergies. Ive really tried to focus on finding more natural approaches to the dogs allergies. After doing a lot of research and consulting with my Vet, I truly feel using Salmon oil for dogs with allergies can be beneficial.

Luna and Yoda both have environmental allergies. Yodas allergies are pretty minimal and easily managed, whereas Luna is high maintenance. She has to be wiped-off each time she goes outside during Spring, Summer, and Fall to remove any allergens she may have come into contact with.

Luna is bathed weekly for the same reason. Bathing weekly was recommended to me by our vet and, that has worked out pretty well for her. Both of our Frenchies get hives when they come into contact with an allergen. They appear as large raised bumps, so theyre pretty easy for us to spot.

Luna gets hot spots, dry patches of skin and, that prompted me to seek out natural treatment options. Many prescription drugs only alleviate skin irritation in dogs due to their allergies . I dont love the side effects of many of them, so I try and stick with more natural remedies when I can. I always consult with my Vet when considering switching from prescriptions for a more natural approach.

What Can I Give My Dog To Relieve Itching

Oatmeal is an age-old remedy for our dry, itchy skin that happens to be safe for use on our canine friends, too! In fact, most doggie hypoallergenic shampoos include oatmeal as an active ingredient to soothe and fight irritation. Start by grinding plain oatmeal into a powder to sprinkle in your dogs warm bath.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids For Skin Allergy In Dogs

Canine atopic dermatitis is common in dogs. Symptoms of skin allergies include hair loss, sores and scabs, increase scratching, red skin, bad body odor and poor quality of life for affected dogs.

Dogs with allergies develop dry skin resulting from a decreased amount of fat in the outer layer of their skin. Disruption of the outer skin barrier allows allergens to contact the immune system in the deeper layers of the dogs skin. A 2011 study found that oral administration of omega 3 fatty acids increased the amount of fat in the outer skin layer of allergic dogs.

Fish oil supplementation may allow an allergic dog to take lower doses of their other meds .

Researchers in a 2004 study gave either borage seed oil, fish oil or a placebo to 60 dogs over a 12-week period. All of the dogs were also treated with prednisolone to control their allergy symptoms. After about nine weeks, the dogs taking fish oil were able to take a lower dosage of prednisone to control their pruritus .

Steroids are great when your dog is in a desperate situation, but they have so many side effects that veterinarians try not to use them long-term whenever possible.

The fact that a fatty acid supplement can reduce the amount of steroid meds needed to control allergy symptoms is pretty amazing!

What Can Dog Allergies Lead To

Fish Oil For Dogs: Good Or Bad?

The outcome of your dog’s allergies depends on the severity of the allergic reaction. In many cases, your vet will give you lifestyle advice, such as changing your pets diet, and possibly medication to treat the reaction. Severe cases can cause long term damage, or even death, so if your dog has a severe reaction to an allergen, they should see an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible.

Fish Oil Has Unexpected Side Effects

While fish oil can offer great health benefits for your dog, there can be some risks too. These are often due to too much EPA in the diet. And that can happen with high fish oil doses, so dont overdo the amount you give your dog.

High Blood SugarBe careful with fish oil if your dogs diabetic. Omega-3 fatty acids are often said to support healthy blood sugar levels. But theres now research showing high doses can increase blood glucose.

BleedingFish oil can thin the blood and can cause bleeding. Some people experience bleeding gums or nosebleeds. It may interact with medications like blood thinners. This bleeding risk also means increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke. And if you give fish oil, stop dosing a few days before any surgery.

Low Blood PressureFish oils well known to lower blood pressure. And that can be a good thing if your dog has high blood pressure. But not if your dogs pressure is normal! And it can increase the effects of blood pressure medication too.

DiarrheaSome dogs dont tolerate fish oil well, especially at high doses. It could cause diarrhea or other digestive upset in your dog. If this happens, youll want to find an alternative source of omega-3s.

Heart HealthOmega-3 supplements are usually touted as heart-healthy. But researchers recently looked at 5 other clinical studies with surprising results. Heart patients receiving fish oil supplements experienced higher incidence of atrial fibrillation .

What Is Salmon Oil

Salmon Oil is an Omega-3 supplement made from salmon. It can be made from either wild-caught salmon or sea-farmed salmon. In most cases, wild salmon is preferred over farmed salmon however, for salmon oil, farmed salmon is better. It contains more omega-6 than wild salmon, and it has a shorter harvesting and processing time. This means that it is fresher when it reaches you and your dog.

Salmon oil has three types of omega-3 fatty acids. It has EPA, DHA, and ALA. EPA and DHA are long-chain fatty acids, and are known for aiding in brain development. ALA is a short-chain fatty acid which is known for fighting free radicals.
