You Experience Shortness Of Breath

Cat Stress: What You Need to Know!

Another annoying symptom of cat allergies is feeling like you just can’t catch your breath. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America says, “Many airborne particles are small enough to get into the lungs. For some, this exposure can cause severe breathing problems. Highly sensitive people can begin coughing, wheezing and have shortness of breath within 15 to 30 minutes of inhaling allergens.”

How Cat Allergies Are Diagnosed

There are two ways to test for any allergy, including to cats: skin testing and blood tests. There are two types of skin allergy tests. A skin prick test and an intradermal skin test. Both tests give fast results and tend to cost less than blood tests.

Certain medications can interfere with skin testing, so talk to your doctor about which test is best for you. Skin testing is usually done by an allergist due to the possibility of severe reactions during testing.

Cat Dander And Other Causes Of Cat Allergy Symptoms

Many cat allergies are triggered by dander the flakes of dead skin shed by cats and other furry pets.

Unlike cat hairs, dander isn’t typically visible, but it can accumulate in a home settling on the walls, carpets and soft furnishings as it does so.

Saliva is also known to be a trigger. Cats are known for their meticulous self-grooming they lick themselves a lot and their saliva contains a protein called Fel d 1 that causes cat allergies3. This protein transfers on to their skin and coat when they groom themselves. Then, over time, the saliva and proteins build up on the cat’s skin and hair, before flaking off with the cat dander as they grow.

  • Some felines produce more Fel d 1 than others, which might explain why some people with cat allergies react to certain cats more seriously
  • It may also explain why kittens don’t always trigger allergies, as they don’t do as much self-grooming

Diagnosis Of Seasonal Allergies In Cats

If you are noticing that your cat is experiencing great discomfort from what appears to be an allergic reaction, bring it in to your veterinarian. Be sure to provide the cat’s full medical history so that other possible health problems can be ruled out. The veterinarian will perform a complete physical examination of the cat. You will be asked if similar symptoms have occurred in the same season during years passed.

It is beneficial to spot allergies early in a cats life to treat the issue before the reaction worsens. Allergy testing can be helpful to identify the exact cause of the reaction. An intradermal test, in which a small portion of the suspected allergen is injected into the skin, can help to rule out and potentially discover what is triggering the cat. If an allergic response is seen after injection, the allergen has been identified. Blood tests to measure the antibodies in the blood can also reveal potential allergies. A radioallergosorbent test or an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay may be used for this measurement. Differentiation from conditions such as mange, ringworm or fleas must be made, sometimes using skin scrapings for microscopic evaluation.

How to Help Dogs and Cats with Allergies

Treatment depends largely on the length of the cat’s allergy season. It involves one of two approaches:

  • The first approach involves the use of corticosteroids , as well as improving the health of the hair and skin coat using spot-ons, sprays and/or shampoos. Steroids will dramatically block the allergic reaction in most cases and bring about rapid improvement in the cat’s clinical signs. Steroids may be given orally or by injection, depending on the cat’s condition. If steroids are appropriate for your cat, you will be instructed in their proper use.
  • Treatment with antihistamines and essential fatty acids is variable. Some cats respond well to a particular antihistamine , while others are ineffective. It is important to understand that it can take up to 7-10 days before antihistamines become effective, therefore they are often infective in sudden flare-ups. Likewise, essential fatty acids are similarly ineffective during sudden episodes because they require several weeks to take effect. Cats predisposed to atopic dermatitis should be tried on fatty acid supplements to see if they help lessen future flare-ups and clinical signs.

Any cat suspected of having atopic dermatitis should also be considered for a hypoallergenic food trial. Many cats with atopic dermatitis are also allergic to an ingredient in their food, making diagnosis and treatment more challenging. As previously mentioned, this food trial should last 8 to 12 weeks in most cases.

Can A Cat Allergy Test Be Wrong

Among the 29 controls with negative skin-prick results, 24 also had negative intradermal results. The other five had to be considered false since the controls all were confirmed negative with the challenge testing. These false positives meant that the combined testing had a specificity of only 77.4%, Cole said.

How Long Will Cat Allergy Symptoms Last After Exposure

As long as you are in the vicinity of an allergen, symptoms of cat allergies will persist. Cat allergy symptoms should go away after you are away from the allergen for a few hours.

However, depending on how serious the cats allergies are, they may persist for 23 days.

However, because pet dander and fur can stay in a home for months or even years, many symptoms might persist for months.

Often, carpets retain pet fur and dander for a longer period of time.

Pet dander has an extremely long shelf life and can adhere to almost anything in the house.

Pet dander typically remains in a household for four to six months after a pet moves out. Due to its more airborne nature, cat dander lasts longer than dog dandruff.

You must either replace the carpets or carefully clean them with a HEPA filter if you wish to lessen symptoms. Similarly, wash other furniture items that are made of fabrics.

The initial allergy assault can linger for about two weeks until you establish a new baseline without immunity.

However, because everyone is unique, some individuals might not notice a difference until all allergies have been eliminated.

Travelling to locations where animals may reside might exacerbate and prolong allergy problems.

These locations include camping, friends houses, zoos, animal shelters, pet shops, and many others.

How Much Do Cat Allergies Cost

Treatment for skin allergies has consistently ranked in the top 8 insurance claims from pet insurance companies.

Cats with allergies can have regular steroid injections that safely and efficiently reduce their symptoms. However, this has some potentially harmful side effects and as such, a regular steroid injection is least advised.

However, cats with severe allergy symptoms are usually sent to a veterinary dermatologist.

Via a blood test or an intradermal skin test, which involves injecting suspected allergens like mold or pollen under a cats skin, the source of skin allergies must be ruled out using a process of elimination.

Although it may sound uncomfortable, this test is sedated and only takes a few hours. Your veterinarian can choose a course of action if an allergen has been identified.

Hyposensitization therapy , which aims to desensitize the cat to particular allergens, is generally advised by veterinary dermatologists.

Given that you must administer the injection frequently and that noticeable improvement may not occur for up to 36 months, this requires quite a commitment.

Atopica is an oral drug veterinarians can prescribe to treat inflammation by suppressing helper T-cells.

Another effective drug for treating allergic infections is cyclosporine, which is also pricey. It is an alternative only in rare instances due to the volume of its expense.

Talk to your veterinarian about all of your options before choosing a course of action.

Fast Facts About Cat Allergies:

Cat food allergies: two places where the symptoms show up â PoC
  • Most people experience mild to moderate symptoms.
  • Some people who have allergies may be able to live with cats.
  • Researchers do not fully understand why some people develop cat allergies and others do not.

The symptoms of cat allergies vary depending on the protein someone is allergic to and their exposure to that protein. For example, tiny allergens from cats can land in a persons nose or eyes, causing burning or itching.

The most common symptoms of a cat allergy include:

  • a rash on areas of the body that have come into contact with cat allergens

Very rarely, people with a cat allergy can develop a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis makes it difficult to breathe, can lower blood pressure to dangerous levels, and can send the body into shock.

A person who has trouble breathing or feels like they are choking following contact with a cat should seek immediate emergency care. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening reaction.

A person who is allergic to cats may continue to have symptoms even after the cat is no longer present. That happens because cat dander and other cat allergens can land on furniture and rugs, remain on unwashed clothes, and linger in linens.

People with allergies who want to live with cats or visit homes that have cats can do several things to manage their symptoms. Trying these can help alleviate the severity of allergies.

These include:

No specific treatment or preventative strategy can guarantee a person will not develop cat allergies.

Do Cats Have Seasonal Allergies

Unlike humans who usually experience respiratory issues, seasonal allergies typically manifest as a condition known as atopic dermatitis in felines. What Is Contact Allergy And How Is It Treated

They result in a local reaction on the skin from contact with an allergic substance. Examples of contact allergy include reactions to shampoos, flea collars, or certain types of bedding, such as wool. If the cat is allergic to such substances, there will be skin irritation and itching at the points of contact. Removal of the contact irritant solves the problem. However, identifying the allergen can be challenging in many cases.

Contact allergies in cats are the least common type of cat allergies among the four types weve listed. Contact allergies result in a local reaction to the cats skin. Reactions to flea collars, fabric, or bedding are examples of a cat contact allergy. When cats are allergic to substances such as these, skin irritation and itching are the most common reactionary signs. This is usually easily solvable and requires nothing more than removing the contact irritant, however, identifying just what that is may require some detective work on your part.

Can Cats Have Allergies

Yes. Just like us, cats may also have allergic reactions to a lot of things. It could be from the things they touch, eat, or breathe in. They are prone to developing food, environmental, and seasonal allergies. Cats may be allergic to fleas, too. Their allergies can act up if their bodies become overly sensitive to the things that are in their environment.

While trying to process and eliminate the irritating substances that are triggering for them, they will likely show various symptoms, including runny eyes, itchiness, and sneezing. Most allergies affecting cats are considered mild, but there are still rare cases when the symptoms turn severe and fatal.

This makes it necessary for all feline owners to familiarize themselves with the signs of allergies in cats and what to do about it, so they can prevent and treat the problem before it worsens.

  • Constant chewing at the tail or paws

Watch out for these symptoms so you will be able to give your cat the treatment that they need as soon as possible to help with their allergies.

Treatment Of Seasonal Allergies In Cats

When addressing allergic reactions, it is always best to attempt milder treatments without negative side effects first. This can limit the damage that is caused by some medications.

Frequent Bathing

Giving a daily bath to a cat suffering from allergic dermatitis, while difficult, may provide fast relief to itching. This process also washes all allergens out of the fur of the cat. A special prescribed shampoo containing hydrocortisone may be used.

Supplements

There are effective supplements available that suppress the release of histamines which are what cause inflammation to exist in the body. Quercetin is often used for this purpose, and it should be paired with proteolytic enzymes to help with absorption.

Medications

Antihistamines such as diphenhydramine or hydroxyzine may be given to a cat suffering an advanced allergic reaction. Cyclosporine may also be administered, but it often causes vomiting and diarrhea in the cat. As a last resort treatment, corticosteroids may be given in low doses. They may be injected or orally administered.

Home Remedies For Cat Allergies In Humans

  • Nasal irrigation. You can fill a neti pot or specially designed squeeze bottle with saline solution, and use this to flush mucus and irritants from your sinuses6.
  • Clean your cat. If you are a cat owner, try bathing your cat yourself. If a friend or relative has a cat and you are regularly spending time around their home, politely suggest this as well. This may reduce their need to self-groom, and cut down the amount of saliva and Fel d 1 you are exposed to6.

Development Of Hypoallergenic Cats

Allergies

In 2006, a company in the USA called Allerca Inc introduced what was claimed to be cats that were hypoallergenic in other words, a cat that did not produce the protein provoking an allergic response in people. According to the company, they identified cats that produced a variant of Fel d 1 that was sufficiently different not to provoke an allergic response. No accepted scientific data was produced to support this claim, and by 2010 the company had apparently stopped selling these cats. The validity of their claims are still debated, but producing a truly hypoallergenic cat is likely to be extremely difficult as although Fel d 1 and Fel d 4 are the major protein causing an allergy, many others can also be involved. Another area of concern would be the size of the gene pool used during the selective breeding programme to develop these cats using what might be a very small gene pool may allow other significant problems to arise in these cats.
