What Causes Allergies In Florida

The main cause of allergies in Florida is ragweed, as long summers lead to allergies due to foliage having the optimal weather to grow.

Apart from allergies to plants, mold is the second largest cause of seasonal allergies in Florida during the fall season. Mold allergies are unlike pollen allergies because when the temperature drops, mold simply becomes benign . Where there are humid and moist conditions, you can count on mold thriving as it is the perfect environment for it to grow. If you are sensitive to allergies, ensure that you never leave water standing, and try to make your home as dry as possible.

To a lesser extent, mold and dust mites are fall allergy triggers, according to WebMd. Mold spores multiply in wet spots outside, such as piles of damp leaves. The first use of the furnace in the fall sends dust mites idle for months swirling into the air.

Generally, allergy sufferers will breathe easier after the first freeze, when temperatures drop below 28 degrees Fahrenheit for a couple of hours. That wont happen as early as it does across the eastern third of the country, according to AccuWeather senior meteorologist Alan Reppert.

Be Proactive To Stay Active

According to allergy specialists, the key to basking in all of Floridas outdoor glory at any time of year is knowing how to keep allergy symptoms under control both before and during allergy season.

Thats why experts strongly recommend that people go for allergy testing to discover the types of pollen can trigger allergy problems for them. Then, its possible to track the current pollen count to minimize exposure and be prepared with the required allergy medicine at high-risk times of the year.

If pollen poses too much of a problem, allergy shots are available and can greatly improve allergy symptoms. Yet there are also allergy medicines on the market that can help you handle allergy season. Experts advise beginning allergy shots or taking allergy medicines before allergy season starts for best results.

The Fall Allergy Season Is Underway In Florida Here’s When It’s Expected To End And What The Main Source Is For Your Misery

Clinics Seeing Rise In Patients With Allergy Symptoms Afraid They Have Coronavirus

FLORIDA Watery eyes, scratchy throats and runny noses are making many folks miserable right now. The fall allergy season is underway in Florida, and only a hard frost will stamp out the pollen that torments allergy sufferers.

Allergies are a year-round malady, but are different in the fall than in other seasons. Ragweed is the big culprit, but mold and dust mites are also fall allergy triggers.

What we see in the fall are allergies to ragweed, WebMD chief medical officer Dr. John Whyte told AccuWeather. It blooms between August and November, so we kind of see that peak pollen mid- to late September.

Get Allergens Out Of The Way

The first and most crucial step in finding relief from your allergy symptoms is simply reducing the number of allergens around you. If you know, pollen is a big culprit for your coughs and sniffles. You should monitor the local pollen counts from your area and try to stay inside in the morning from about 5 A.M. to 10 A.M. when the pollen count is highest.

You can also use strategies like keeping your pets out of your bedroom and especially off of your bed. If your dog or cat spends time outside, their fur can trap pollen, which can transfer to your room and make it a breeding ground for allergic reactions.

Keeping everything inside and outside of your house clean is also a key strategy. Regularly vacuuming up dust, pollen particles, and pet dander from the floor will save you from a lot of those horrible symptoms, as well as wiping down the cabinets and countertops around your house that can collect dust mites.

We also highly recommend you mow your lawn or backyard often to keep the grass short, as taller grass is more likely to release pollen. If youre not able to have someone mow the lawn for you, wear a protective face mask and sunglasses to keep pollen out of your way.

What Are Seasonal Dog Allergies

Just as in humans, an allergy response in dogs is the result of the immune system overreacting to an allergen. This causes a range of symptoms that, for dogs, usually manifest as skin issues. Symptoms pop up any time your dog comes in contact with the allergenoften seasonally.

Common allergens include:

  • Nasal discharge

If your pets itchiness is more severe, their obsessive scratching could lead to more problems including fungal or bacterial skin infections. Discharge and an unpleasant odor from the skin are typical signs of an infection.

TAMPA, Fla. Those who suffer from allergies could be experiencing symptoms even earlier this year, amid ongoing concerns with COVID-19 and the omicron variant.

According to Sinus Solutions of South Florida, allergy season in Florida is always. Tree pollen season in the state can begin as soon as late December, the website states, and can run through May.

The website lists American elms, bayberry trees, bluejack oaks, maples, pine and river birch trees as the main culprits that cause Floridians discomfort through this months.

Dr. Nisha Patel, of Aspire Allergy & Sinus in the Tampa Bay area, said Florida allergy season has consistently arrived early over the last few years.

Maybe theres a little bit of the global warning piece of it, maybe theres other factors. Hurricanes, definitely post-hurricanes there seems to be a change in the environment, although weve been lucky this particular year, she said.

When Should I Start Taking Allergy Meds

Theres no point in waiting until youre miserable to take allergy meds. In fact, allergists recommend you start taking meds a couple of weeks before allergy season arrives, or, at the latest, take them the moment you notice symptoms, says Dr. Parikh. Taking them early can stop an immune system freak-out before it happens, lessening the severity of symptoms, she adds. Check out the National Allergy Map to figure out when to start taking meds based on where you live.

As for which allergy meds to take, if youre seriously stuffed, start with steroid nasal sprays such as Flonase or Rhinocort, which reduce inflammation-induced stuffiness, says Dr. Keet. And if you’ve got itching, sneezing, and a runny nose too, look for non-sedating antihistamines such as Zyrtec, Xyzal, or Allegra, she adds.

Just remember: While OTC allergy meds suppress symptoms, they dont cure the problem, so they may be less effective if your allergies are worsening, notes Dr. Parikh.

For instance, Grendel, our older dog did not have many environmental allergies. She was, however, allergic to just about everything we were feeding her! By removing those allergens from her diet, we were able to strengthen her immune system enough to deal with the allergens in her environment. We also found she was allergic to cotton and wool. We changed her beds and blankets to acrylic fleece, and no further treatment was necessary.

Our younger dog, Zohan, however, is basically allergic to the planet. The next step in his treatment plan was to have the same lab prepare a serum containing trace amounts of the allergens in his profile. This used to be given in the form of injections, but giving injections at home proved challenging for many owners. Some of the injections were painful, and allergic reactions were sometimes observed. The delivery method has since come a long way. The serum is now given by mouth. Its dispensed in a little pump bottle that simply hooks over the lower mandible. Most owners report their pets do not mind the taste, and some claim their pets seem to enjoy it. We have found this to be a very effective way of managing seasonal allergies in both dogs and cats. For pet owners who may be unable to do this, we often recommend more frequent bathing, and wiping their feet with a moistened cloth whenever they come in from the outdoors.

Additional Tips To Manage And Control Your Fall Allergies

Flonase Trailer
  • When possible, stay inside and keep doors and windows closed when pollen is at its highest to get daily pollen counts in our area or visit Pollen.com for your own local area.
  • Before you turn on the heat in your house for the first time, make sure to clean the heating vents and change filters. Sometimes mold and other allergens get trapped in the vents over our humid summers and will fill the air in your house once the heat kicks on.
  • Invest in a HEPA filter for your homes HVAC system. These filters force air through a fine mesh and traps harmful allergens and particles such as pollen, pet dander, mites, and tobacco smoke.
  • Use a dehumidifier to keep the air inside your home below 50% humidity.
  • Wear a mask when working outside and in your yard so you dont breathe in mold sporesthis is especially important if you are raking leaves or picking up decaying grass clippings.

With proper care and clean up, and some preventative medications, you can enjoy the great fall weather we have here in Jacksonville.

Tree Pollen Allergy Symptoms

A sensitivity to pollen causes your body to produce an abundance of allergic antibodies called IgE. IgE allows your immune system to launch a full scale allergic response when it sees a culprit tree pollen. These reactions result in a flood of histamines in your eyes and respiratory tract and can lead to following allergy symptoms:

  • Itchy and tearing/watery red eyes. Your eyes may be inflamed, itchy and red. There might also be crust along your eyelids, most commonly experienced upon waking in the morning.
  • Bags under the eyes. You might also notice dark circles and bags under your eyes. These are sometimes called allergic shiners and are due to congested blood vessels associated with nasal inflammation.
  • Runny nose. People with tree pollen allergies experience nasal congestion and a runny nose at the same time. A runny nose might also result in post-nasal drip. Children can develop a semi-permanent crease along their noses from constantly rubbing the tips of their runny noses upwarda maneuver affectionately termed the allergic salute!
  • Sneezing and congestion. You may sneeze frequently, have an itchy nose, and feel pressure in your nose and sinuses.
  • Coughing fits or sore throats. Allergies to tree pollen may also cause you to experience a scratchy, sore throat. The discomfort can be due to inflammation, post-nasal drip or both. Depending on how much youre coughing, you could also develop laryngitis and hoarseness.

Causes Of Fall Allergies

While grasses and flowers are allergy culprits during the spring and summer, ragweed is the most common cause of fall allergies in Florida. Long summers can lead to prolonged grass allergies, as grasses can grow longer and continue to produce pollen.

Mold allergies are another major cause of symptoms during the fall. Unlike pollen, which dies during frost, mold goes dormant and resumes growing when the temperature warms. There are two main categories of mold allergies: indoor and outdoor.

Wet or humid areas are the perfect environment for indoor mold, especially basements and kitchens. Outdoor mold thrives in damp leaf piles, compost or grass piles, and on rotting logs. Allergy symptoms occur when the individual comes into contact with mold spores, or inhales them.
