How Are Antihistamines Classified

Antihistamines are divided into two major subtypes. The first subtype is called H-1 receptor antagonists or H-1 blockers. This subtype of antihistamines is used to treat allergy symptoms. The second subtype is called H-2 receptor antagonists or H-2 blockers. They are used to treat gastrointestinal conditions, including gastroesophageal reflux disease , peptic ulcers, gastritis, motion sickness, nausea and vomiting. How Do Corticosteroid Nasal Sprays Work

Corticosteroids work to inhibit the body’s inflammatory response to reduce the inflammation that’s involved in an allergic reaction. In allergic rhinitis, the body produces different chemicals that cause inflammation in the nose and nasal passages, leading to bothersome nasal symptoms such as congestion, runny nose, itching, and sneezing. Nasal corticosteroids reduce inflammation by stopping these chemicals from forming, thereby decreasing allergy symptoms.

How Much Will My Allergy Medication Cost

Once youve found an allergy medication that fits your needs, youll ultimately want a good price for it. All of the medications listed in this article have brand-name and generic forms. Most are also available over-the-counter. Their cost will largely depend on whether you buy them over the counter or with a prescription. And as it turns out, visiting your provider and getting a prescription for a generic version can be well worth it.

Lets take Claritin as an example. Claritin costs about $33 retail. If you get a prescription for the generic form, loratadine, you might pay about $10 cash instead for the same amount. Thats over 50% savings. Now, if you use a GoodRx coupon with your prescription, that same amount of loratadine can cost as little as $4, saving you 87% off the brand-name, over-the-counter price.

Why Do Antihistamines Cause Weight Gain

Why do anti-histamines cause weight gain? Histamine decreases our hunger by in part affecting the appetite control center in our brains, and it makes sense an anti-histamine would have the opposite effect. These drugs can interfere with the Im full signal coming from the rest of our bodies and lead to overeating.

What Is Allergy Pretreatment

Allergy pretreatment is simple: start taking your medicine a few weeks before the allergy season starts. While they might vary by a week or so from year to year, the pollen seasons are really quite predictable, says Hugh H. Windom, MD, associate clinical professor of immunology at the University of South Florida. So if you know the allergens that trigger your allergies, getting a jump on them should be easy.

âThe sooner you get on your medicine, the better,â Windom says. What type of medicine works best for pretreatment of allergies? That depends on your case.

âThereâs no ideal drug for preventing allergy symptoms,â Windom says. âChoosing the best drug depends a lot on what worked for you in the past.â

Any allergy medicine can work as pretreatment, more or less. Antihistamines are an excellent choice, experts say. Examples of over-the-counter antihistamines are Benadryl or Claritin. Prescription antihistamines, like the nasal spray Astelin, are another option. Other allergy medicines that work in different ways, such as steroids — like Flonase, Nasonex, or Veramyst — can also help.

What if you donât take the medicine before your symptoms start? Donât despair. âBeing off by a day or two is not a big deal,â Windom tells WebMD. âBut donât wait a whole week, since by then you might already have a cough, and congestion, or worse.â

If youâre pretreating every year, how will you know if youâve outgrown your allergies?

How To Take It

Adults and children 6 years and older can take cetirizine capsules and tablets.

The usual dosage for adults younger than 65 years and children who are 6 years and older is one 10-milligram dose per day.

You shouldnt take more than 10 mg in 24 hours. Your doctor may recommend a 5-mg dose once or twice per day if your allergies are mild.

Talk to your doctor about dosage for people who:

  • are 2 to 6 years old
  • are older than 65 years
  • have liver or kidney disease

Cetirizine is a newer, second-generation antihistamine. Unlike first-generation antihistamines, cetirizine is less likely to cause side effects such as dangerous drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, and overheating.

That said, Cetirizine can cause adverse effects, such as:

  • some drowsiness
  • diarrhea
  • vomiting

Tell your doctor about any unexpected side effects that you have while taking cetirizine. Also, discuss any ongoing or bothersome side effects. These side effects are usually not emergencies.

Following are a few things to consider before taking cetirizine.

Whats The Difference Between First

Just like the name implies, the first generation antihistamine were the first type approved by the Food and Drug Administration . They began to be approved in the United States in the 1930s and are still prescribed today.

They work on histamine receptor in the brain and spinal cord along with other types of receptors. Most notable about this generation of antihistamines is that they cross the blood-brain barrier, which results in drowsiness.

Second-generation antihistamines were approved by the FDA and first came to market in the 1980s. The second-generation antihistamines do not cross the blood-brain barrier to the extent that first-generation do and therefore do not cause drowsiness at standard dosage levels. Second-generation antihistamines are considered to be safer than first generation antihistamines because they dont cause drowsiness and interact with fewer drugs.

Leave Your Shoes And Pollen At The Front Door

Effective Allergy Relief For Your Child

You can carry quite a bit of pollen into the house after youve been exposed to it by exercising or working outside. If you dont take off your shoes as soon as you come into the house, you may be tracking pollen into every room. The same goes for your clothes. Its not necessary for everyone, but if seasonal allergies like hay fever are particularly troublesome for you, change your clothes as soon as you come in and throw them in the wash to keep allergy symptoms from following you home, Dr. Dykewicz advises.
