Why Doing A Food Allergy Test Is Important

Wellness Wednesday: Grass pollen allergy treatment

Even with the great advancement in medical science as of now, basically there is still no cure for food allergies. The only course of action that could be done is just an avoidance of food allergens that could lead to an allergic reaction. Hence early recognition and management of allergic reactions to food will be important measures to prevent serious health consequences.

Seasonal Allergies: Grass Pollen

Pollen, many people think of flowers, weeds, and trees when they hear the word but grass pollen also appears it during the late spring months. Grass is one of the bothersome allergens that may cause seasonal allergies. Allergies can be caused by the bodies overreaction to a harmless substance, mistaking it for a dangerous one. Pollen and mold spores can be triggers for seasonal allergies, but pet dander, dust mites, and food also cause allergies.

Allergies to pets and foods can often be avoided by eliminating exposure to the bothersome allergen, however, with pollen, its not so easy. Pollens are light and easily spread by the wind, making it a challenge to avoid coming in contact with it. Some common grass pollen we see in our pollen counts are Kentucky bluegrass, bermuda, redtop, orchard and timothy grasses. Take a look at some of the most common grass mold allergy symptoms and ways to combat it.

How Can I Manage Grass Allergy Symptoms

The first step in management is to confirm the diagnosis of an allergy through allergy skin testing as there can be other triggers for spring time symptoms, such as infection. Avoidance is the best treatment for an allergy but this can be difficult when it comes to pollen.

Here are some other ways to reduce grass exposure and symptoms:

  • Stay indoors on high pollen days and keep door and windows closed.
  • Keep the grass on your lawn short, as this reduces its ability to release pollen.
  • Take a bath and wash your hair before bedtime to remove pollen from your body and keep it out of your bed.
  • Wash all of your bedding at least once a week.
  • Change your clothes right away after spending time outdoors.
  • Take off your shoes before going inside, and clean your floors at least once a week.

If you have pets, you will also want to ensure that they dont bring grass pollen inside with them after they spend time outdoors. Always wipe them off before letting them back inside, and bathe and groom them on a regular basis. Keeping them out of bedrooms and off of furniture during pollen season can also help.

  • Check local pollen counts daily and limit time outside when pollen counts are high. Rain helps clear pollen from the air, so the best time to go outside is after a good rain.
  • Delegate outdoor chores whenever possible and wear a pollen mask if you must do outside tasks.
  • Keep windows closed and use air conditioning instead.
  • Wash bedding at least once a week in hot, soapy water.
  • Wash your clothes after outdoor activities and dry all clothes in a dryer as opposed to line drying outdoors.
  • Bathe and wash your hair every day before bedtime to keep pollen out of your bed.
  • Wipe off any pets to remove pollen before letting them into your home.
  • Ensure everyone removes their shoes before entering your home.
  • Use certified asthma and allergy air filters.
  • Pharmacological treatment, including antihistamines, corticosteroids, decongestants, and saline douches.
  • Allergen immunotherapy as directed by your healthcare provider.

Treatment Of Seasonal Allergies

Is grass allergy making you miserable? Sublingual ...

If symptoms are severe and over-the-counter remedies are not working on your itchy eyes, a trip to the allergist is called for. Tests, sometimes involving pricking the skin with needles containing various allergens, will pinpoint the cause of the symptoms. Allergy shots are a common treatment, as are nasal sprays.

Following clinical studies the Food and Drug Administration in 2014 gave approval to two new prescription drugs that protect against grass pollens from several allergy-inducing grasses:

Grastek treats allergies due to Timothy grass.

Oralair treats allergies triggered by pollen from Sweet Vernal, Orchard, Perennial Rye, Timothy, and 7 Kentucky Blue Grass Mixed Pollens.

Both are potent sublingual pills that dissolve under the tongue and can have strong side effects.

An additional product, Ragwitek, was OKd for use in treating ragweed allergy.

When Is The Grass Pollen Season

In northern regions of the United States, grasses usually pollinate in the late spring or early summer. In southern regions, grasses may pollinate throughout many seasons and could trigger symptoms throughout the year.

These small, light and dry grass pollen grains are released into the air and can travel for hundreds of miles by the wind.

What You Should Know About Allergy Shots!

If you have asthma caused by pollens, your doctor will prescribe the correct medication and help you to develop a plan to manage your asthma. Make sure you follow your asthma action plan.Asthma can be well controlled with the appropriate medication in almost all people. The main types of medication are:

  • relievers that act quickly to relax the muscles around the airways this is the medication used during an asthma attack
  • preventers that slowly make the airways less sensitive to allergy triggers and reduce inflammation inside the airways these are taken daily
  • combination therapies with preventers containing two different medications.

If you have an asthma attack, follow your asthma action plan. In case of emergency, call triple zero and ask for an ambulance. Tell the operator that someone is having an asthma attack. The signs of an emergency include when the person:

  • finds it very difficult to breathe
  • is unable to speak comfortably or if their lips are turning blue
  • has symptoms that get worse very quickly
  • is getting little or no relief from their reliever inhaler.

While waiting for the ambulance, give four puffs of reliever medication every four minutes.

    Allergens Found In Some Grasses

Group 5 allergens are the most important allergens in this group, as 65% to 85% of grass pollen allergic patients from temperate regions display IgE reactivity to group 5 allergens and their allergenic activity is extremely high . Homologous allergens were found in all grasses from the Pooideae subfamily, such as timothy grass , rye , Kentucky bluegrass and rye grass however, group 5 allergens are not present in all grasses. No group 5 allergens were found in Z. mays and C. dactylon and not in Oryza sativa, which are members of the Panicoideae, Chloridoideae and Bambusoideae subfamily respectively. The latter subfamilies are highly prevalent in the Southern hemisphere. In fact, it has been found that patients in such areas are preferentially sensitized to group 1, 4 and 13 allergens but show less frequently reactivities to group 2, 5 and 6 allergens . Phl p 5, one of the best characterized group 5 allergen molecule, is one of several allergens within a species, of which exist different isoallergens, in this case Phl p 5a and Phl p 5b isoallergens differ in sequence but most patients show extensive IgE cross-reactivity to Phl p 5 isoallergens .

Group 6 allergens have been shown to react with 60% to 70% of sera of grass pollen allergic patients . They have been identified in P. pratense and Poa pratensis and may occur also in A. odoratum .

    Side Effects Of Immunotherapy Injections

Some patients develop a localised swelling at the site of the injection. This can be treated with non-sedating oral antihistamines or ice packs and if painful, Paracetamol. If the swelling is significant, your doctor may need to reduce the next dose.

More severe reactions are uncommon, however predicting who might have the serious reactions is difficult. Patients are normally advised to:

    • Remain in their doctor’s surgery for at least 30 minutes after injection.
    • Avoid exercising for at least 3 hours afterwards.
    • Avoid some heart and blood pressure medications . Must be discussed with the prescribing doctor.
    • Taking a non-sedating oral antihistamine before the injection may reduce the risk of side effects and may be recommended by your doctor.

It is important to inform your doctor about any reactions you may have experienced after your last injection and any new medications you are taking , or if you become pregnant.

Patients who are pregnant , are not routinely commenced on allergen immunotherapy until after they have given birth. If the patient is on maintenance doses of allergen immunotherapy and then becomes pregnant, the injections can be continued , but the supervising specialist should be contacted to discuss relevant safety issues.

    What Makes It Worse

Dry, windy days. Wind carries pollen in the air, especially when it’s dry and sunny. When it’s cold or damp, pollen counts are usually lower.

Certain foods. If you’re allergic to grasses, your symptoms are more likely to be triggered by particular fruits and vegetables that have proteins like those in pollen. Fresh celery, melons, peaches, oranges, and tomatoes may give you an itchy feeling in your mouth.

Unmowed lawn. Most types of grass release pollen only when they grow tall. The pollen comes from a feathery flower that grows at the top. If you keep your lawn mowed, it’s less likely to release pollen. But Bermuda grass and some other types can still release the sneezy stuff even if you keep it short.
