How To Treat Food Intolerance In Cats

There are a few things you can do to help your cat if they have food intolerance. The first is to feed them a limited ingredient diet. This means choosing a food that has only a few ingredients in it, and that your cat has not eaten before. You may also want to try a hypoallergenic food, which is made without common allergens like wheat, soy, and dairy. If your cat is still having problems, you may need to feed them a prescription diet from your vet.

What Is Food Intolerance

A food intolerance isn’t the same as a food allergy.

People with food intolerance may have symptoms such as diarrhoea, bloating and stomach cramps. This may be caused by difficulties digesting certain substances, such as lactose. However, no allergic reaction takes place.

Important differences between a food allergy and a food intolerance include:

You need to be prepared in case you eat something with the food that causes your allergic reaction. You may need an emergency kit to stop severe reactions. Talk with your healthcare provider about what you should do.

Medicines are available for some symptoms caused by food allergy after the food has been eaten. Discuss available medicines with your healthcare provider.

Other Than Oral Ingestion

Sensitization can occur through the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract and possibly the skin. Damage to the skin in conditions such as eczema has been proposed as a risk factor for sensitization.

While the most obvious route for an allergic exposure is oral ingestion, some reactions are possible through external exposure. Peanut allergies are much more common in adults who had oozing and crusted skin rashes as infants. Airborne particles in a farm- or factory-scale peanut shelling or crushing environment, or from cooking, can produce respiratory effects in exposed allergic individuals. For seafood allergy, an industry review estimated that 28.5 million people worldwide were engaged in some aspect of the seafood industry: fishing, aquaculture, processing and industrial cooking. Exposure to fish allergenic proteins includes inhalation of wet aerosols from fresh fish handling, inhalation of dry aerosols from fishmeal processing, and dermal contact through skin breaks and cuts. Respiratory allergies are an occupational disease that develop in food service workers working with baked goods, known as “bakers asthma”). Previous studies detected 40 allergens from wheat some cross-reacted with rye proteins and a few cross-reacted with grass pollens.

Food Labels And Allergens

People with food allergies should read labels and avoid the foods they are allergic to. The law requires that food labels identify the food source of all major food allergens used to make the food. This requirement is met if the common or usual name of an ingredient already identifies that allergen’s food source name . The law also requires that the type of tree nut , and the species of fish and Crustacean shellfish to be declared. The allergen’s food source must be declared at least once on the food label in one of two ways.

FDA guidance and regulations for the food industry states that advisory statements should not be used as a substitute for adhering to current good manufacturing practices and must be truthful and not misleading.

Food Allergy Rash And Anaphylaxis

The most severe type of allergic reaction is anaphylaxis, which is a life-threatening condition. This is not a complication of a food rash itself, but rather a complication of the overall allergic reaction. Hives and anaphylactic reactions often occur together, but you can have hives without having anaphylaxis.

On top of the food allergy symptoms listed above, anaphylaxis may cause:

• breathing difficulties
• severe swelling in the mouth, face, neck, and throat
• tightness in the throat
• tingling lips, hands, and feet

If your doctor recommends epinephrine shots for severe food allergies, its important to keep them on hand at all times. Even breathing in a food allergen can cause severe issues. Also, the severity of a reaction may vary just because one reaction was mild, doesnt mean the next will also be mild.

Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency. Call 911 or your local emergency services and take your epinephrine shot as soon as you experience symptoms. Antihistamines cant treat anaphylaxis because the symptoms are too severe at this stage.

You Have Allergic Rhinitis

The itch irritating the roof of your mouth may be related to allergic rhinitis. Commonly known as hay fever, allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory condition that occurs when someone with an allergy is exposed to an allergen that activates an immune response, Dr. Damask says.

“While allergic rhinitis is characterized by an itchy, sneezy, blocked-up nose, frequently, there can also be associated itching of the palate as well as the throat, ears and eyes,” she says.

Though this allergic disorder is prevalent in the U.S. population , allergic triggers will vary from person to person, Dr. Damask says.

For example, some may be allergic to grass or tree pollen and only have symptoms during the spring while others may be irritated by mold that appears in the fall when piles of wet leaves build up.

“Still, others may have year-round symptoms due to triggers like animal dander and dust mites,” Dr. Damask adds.

âFix it:â Itâs best to see an otolaryngologist â i.e., a doctor who specializes in conditions of the ears, nose and throat â who can perform allergy testing, Dr. Damask says. This will help you identify your triggers, so you can avoid the allergens that spark your symptoms.

Your doctor may also discuss other treatment options such as antihistamines, nasal sprays and immunotherapy , she says.

Steps to take if an individual is experiencing anaphylaxis:

· Call 911 immediately.

· Try to keep them calm.

· Help them lie on their back and raise their feetabout 12 inches off the ground.

· Cover them with a blanket.

· Turn them on their side if they are vomiting orbleeding.

· Make sure their clothing is loose so they canbreathe easier.

Epinephrine can greatly reduce the effects of a severeallergic reaction and help keep someone stable until they can be seen by amedical professional. So, the sooner epinephrine can be administered, thebetter. Avoid giving them oral medications, asking them to drink fluids or lifttheir head, especially if they are having difficulty breathing.

After experiencing anaphylaxis for the first time, aphysician can prescribe an emergency epinephrine injector. Its a good idea toteach your close family members, friends or coworkers how to use the injectorin case of an emergency at home, work or in public.

Why Are Food Allergies Increasing

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported a 50 percent increase in the number of children with food allergies since the late 1990s. Many theories have been suggested as to why the number of people with food allergies is growing, but scientific research has not yet found the cause.

Other Allergens Or Allergenic Substances

More than 160 foods have been identified to cause food allergies in sensitive individuals. There are also several food ingredients that cause nonallergic hypersensitivity reactions in sensitive individuals that require specific labeling. For example, in addition to the major food allergens identified by law, the FDA monitors the food supply to determine if other allergens, food ingredients, or food additives pose a significant health risk and acts accordingly. Gluten, certain additives , and other food allergens for which new science has emerged, are examples of other substances the FDA monitors and, in some cases, requires specific labeling for.

Tips Treatment For Food Intolerance

Tests can confirm food intolerance for certain foods or substances. Yet, there is no test for many foods. Try keeping a journal of what you eat, and monitor it for instances when symptoms flare up. You may discover specific foods that cause your symptoms. Try avoiding them in the future. Treatment depends on the intolerance. Typically, lactose intolerance is treated by avoiding or limiting lactose-containing foods or with drug therapy, such as an over-the-counter product.

Since foods with dairy contain phosphorus, calcium, and other important minerals and vitamins, it’s not recommended to avoid lactose unless the intolerance has been confirmed with testing. If a tolerance is confirmed, you can then discuss with your health care team whether a multivitamin or additional calcium and vitamin D supplementation are recommended.
