So What Made Me Decide Im Not Eating Almonds Anymore

    Good question.

Its not because Ive uncovered some secret evil thing about almonds. And its not to say you should stop eating them.

Its because as much as my taste buds like them, my body doesnt.

See almonds are among a number of foods that I tested reactive to when I got screened for food sensitivities recently. I also tested reactive to salicylic acid, a compound naturally found in almonds and many other foods .

So although they are the go-to healthy nut praised for their calcium, vitamin E, fiber, protein, and monounsaturated fats, they are unfortunately a source of inflammation to my body.

I had actually guessed they might be a problem food cause when Id eat too many, I would get a canker sore or two in my mouth. But then again, I also suspected chocolate, which thankfully is not a culprit. And peanuts. And corn. And lemon. And eggs. All of which are in fact NOT reactive for me. Praise the food gods!

You see, its really hard to figure out what foods your body reacts to because the side effects of food sensitivities can be delayed up to 4 days after eating them . So that handful of almonds I had on Monday could be the source of the canker sore that popped up on Thursday.

In the next few weeks, Ill be taking the plunge, practicing what I preach, and making sweeping dietary changes to quell inflammation in my body. I guess you can say Ive been talked into it by my clients own success stories and compelled to do this out of utter curiosity.

Almond Milk Is Not Good For The Environment

There are three main reasons why almond milk is not good for the environment. It leads to excessive food waste. It takes a lot of energy to grow almonds. And the pesticides in nut farms are dangerous for bees.

Almond milk leads to excessive waste because of the way it is produced. Almonds are processed, mixed with water, and strained. All the solids are discarded. Chefs and manufacturers dont reuse them. What results is a ton of discarded, flavorless, and wasted almond pulps.

Almond milk takes a lot of energy to make because almonds require a huge amount of water to grow. According to one study from Penn State, it takes over one gallon of water to grow a single almond.

The pesticides in nut farms are lethal to bees. Bees are crucial to pollinate almond flowers. The fact that more bees are required to pollinate almond trees than any other crop just makes it worse. It doesnt help that the bee population worldwide has been decreasing in recent years.

Additionally, its rich vitamin and mineral content, specifically vitamin E, makes the oil an excellent natural antioxidant agent that is designed to protect your skin against free radical damage and oxidative stress as well as damage from harmful UV rays, thus keeping your skin soft and supple.

A 2007 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that almond oil reduced the effects of UV light-induced photoaging on the skin and it had a photoprotective effect on the skin, thus it is capable of preventing structural damages caused by UV irradiation and in decelerating the photoaging process.

Ingredients In Pure Almond Extract Vs Almond Flavoring

Pure almond extractconsists of just three ingredients:

The almond oil contains a compound called benzaldehyde, which is where almond extract gets its flavor. Sometimes the benzaldehyde is extracted from the pits of drupes, such as peaches or apricots, as these stone fruits are close relatives of the almond.

To make pure almond extract, almonds are cold-pressed and combined with alcohol. Water is then added to dilute the solution.

On the other hand, almond flavoring, otherwise known as imitation almond extract, gets its almond flavor from synthetic benzaldehyde, which is then combined with water and alcohol to dilute the solution.
