When your child is suffering from an allergy, it is so easy to run to the medicine cabinet and just grab a bottle without checking the expiry date. A new study found that this is true in almost 20% of cases.;
Another finding of the study is that the wide range of allergy medications, along with dosing and labelling differences, can make it a challenge to select the right medicine for kids.
Allergies can occur at any time
“Parents often face an overwhelming selection of allergy medicine without clear guidelines on how to choose the right one for their child,” said paediatrician Dr Gary Freed.
Freed is co-director of the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health at the University of Michigan.
“If parents are unsure how to navigate allergy medication choices, they should always check with their child’s health-care provider,” Freed said in a university news release.
But allergies can occur at any time, even when a doctor is not available. A Health24 review states that many over-the-counter medications are sufficient for treating unexpected allergies, provided that the correct medication and dosage is administered.;

Freed’s group surveyed more than 1 000 parents of children aged 6 to 12 across the United States.
“While outdated medicines are unlikely to be dangerous, they may have lost some of their effectiveness,” Freed noted.

Pharmacies take pills out of their original containers, repackage them and put new expiration dates on. It’s hard to be definitive, but a medication dispensed by a pharmacy is likely to lose its potency faster than a medication that remains in an unopened containereven if the pharmacy’s container isn’t opened. Think of it as another factor to consider when doing your educated guesswork about what to keep and what to toss.

Drugs that exist in solution, especially injectable drugs, should be discarded if the product forms a precipitant or looks cloudy or discolored.1
Liquid drugs such as eye or ear solutions, oral liquids, or topical solutions may undergo evaporation of solvents over time.11
Expired medications that contain preservatives, such as ophthalmic drops, may be unsafe past their expiration date.1 Outdated preservatives may allow bacterial growth in the solution.

In Most Cases The Expiration Date On Medication Doesn’t Mean What You Think It Does
The expiration date on the packaging of OTC and prescription drugs doesn’t necessarily reflect when the product expires.
“The vast majority of medications maintain most of their potency years after the posted expiration date. That date is the date after which full potency cannot be guaranteed by the manufacturer,” emergency-medicine specialist Dr. Jack Springer told INSIDER.
Studies conducted by independent researchers and the Food and Drug Administration have found that common drugs retain nearly all their potency many years after the posted expiration date.
“The expiration date doesn’t really indicate a point at which the medication is no longer effective or has become unsafe to use,” Springer said. “Medical authorities state if expired medicine is safe to take, even those that expired years ago.”
There are exceptions; some medications and drug types undergo changes during extended storage that can compromise their safety or effectiveness. Liquid medications and some antibiotics are among these.

What Does A Medicines Expiration Date Mean
Drug manufacturers are required to stamp an expiration date on their products. On over-the-counter medicines, the expiration date is often printed on the label or carton under “EXP” or stamped without ink into the bottom of a bottle, carton, or the crimp of a tube.
But what does the expiration date mean? Is a medicine still safe to take after its expiration date?Will it cause harm or just not work after its expiration date? Neither fully explains what the expiration date means. Actually, it’s the date up until which the drug manufacturer can guarantee that the medicine is fully potent and safe to take based on product testing. Expiration dates are typically conservative to make sure you get what you paid fora fully potent and safe medicine.
The effectiveness of a medicine may decrease over time, but studies have shown that much of the original potency still remains years after the expiration date. Excluding certain prescription medicines such as nitroglycerin, insulin, and liquid antibiotics, most medicines stored under reasonable conditions retain at least 70% to 80% of their original potency for at least 1 to 2 years after the expiration date, even after the container has been opened.1 So, if you have a headache one night, and you reach for your bottle of ibuprofen and find that it expired last year, chances are high that the medicine still has retained most of its potency.
Nasal Sprays Contain Preservatives That Deteriorate
Nasal sprays usually contain preservatives that keep them safe to use. As time passes, the quality of the preservatives can degrade.
“Preservatives are the most likely ingredients to expire in nasal sprays,” Langdon said. “This may increase the risk of contamination.”
Following the instructions on the container is the best way to make sure you’re using safe, effective nasal spray.

Do Antihistamines Lose Effectiveness
The causes for the diminished effect of antihistamine drugs are far less clear. The bulk of evidence will tell you that drug tolerance does not occur no matter how long or aggressively the drugs are used. If anything, their prolonged use will reduce a persons tolerance to their side effects, particularly drowsiness.

When Do Antihistamines Expire
Antihistamines, one of the main types of allergy medicine, can be safe to use after the expiration date.;
For over-the-counter medicines like Claritin and Zyrtec, the listed expiration dates are typically around two and a half years after manufacturing. Expiration dates for prescription antihistamines are around one year, according to New Jersey-based pharmacist Kristin Frank.
OTC and prescription tablets are similar in makeup, and therefore can last the same amount of time. But prescriptions, , cannot have longer than one-year expiration dates.;
All allergy medicines are regulated by the FDA, which takes a strict, no-leeway stance on expired medicine for utmost safety and effectiveness. But a 2012 study in the JAMA Internal Medicine Journal found that expired medicines, including antihistamines, can remain effective for decades.;

How To Dispose Of Expired Medicines Safely
Disposing medicines safely prevents others from using them accidentally or intentionally. It also prevents harmful residues from getting into the environment.

DO NOT FLUSH UNUSED MEDICINES
You should not flush most medicines or pour them down the drain. Medicines contain chemicals that may not break down in the environment. When flushed down the toilet or sink, these residues can pollute our water resources. This may affect fish and other marine life. These residues can also end up in our drinking water.
However, some medicines must be disposed of as soon as possible to reduce their potential harm. You can flush them to prevent someone from using them. These include opioids or narcotics usually prescribed for pain. You should ONLY flush medicines when it specifically says to do so on the label.
