What About Antihistamines In Cold And Flu Medications

What many people may not know is that cold and flu medicines marketed to treat runny nose and sneezing usually include first-generation antihistamines the more sedating types. Thats because they are often better at treating cold symptoms and drying up runny nose than the newer types.

Because of their sedating effect, cold medicines with antihistamines are labeled for nighttime use. Take this labeling seriously, as some include medications like doxylamine that are more sedating than others. Check labels for dosages, as well, as these may vary, even within brands.

More is not better read labels carefully and take only as recommended. Dont supplement a multi-symptom cold medication with another single-ingredient antihistamine.

Dermatitis can cause a rash and lead to itching, which will make your other allergy symptoms feel even worse.

Should You Worry About Allergic Reactions To The Covid

What Medications Can You Take While Pregnant?

Allergic reactions to the COVID-19 vaccine are possible, but rarethey occur in every two to five people per million vaccinated, per the CDC. This type of allergic reaction almost always presents within 30 minutes of the shot, which is why you have to wait 15 to 30 minutes before leaving your vaccination site.

The majority of allergy patients can take the vaccine with no problem.

Fortunately, vaccination providers have medicines available to effectively and immediately treat patients who experience anaphylaxis following vaccination, the CDC notes. This means that you should not attempt to treat any adverse reaction on your own with OTC allergy medications.

Anyone with a history of severe allergic reactions for any reason should be aware of the risks of anaphylaxis from the COVID-19 vaccine. If you are allergic to polyethylene glycol, polysorbate, or any of the components in the available COVID-19 vaccines, you should not receive the vaccine, per the CDC.

When in doubt, talk to your doctor to discuss your options. Consult an allergist if you are worried you may be allergic to the vaccine, Dr. Parikh recommends. The majority of allergy patients can take the vaccine with no problem.

Side Effects Of Antihistamines

Ask your provider if antihistamines are safe for you or your child, what side effects to watch for, and how antihistamines may affect other medicines you or your child take.

  • Antihistamines are thought to be safe for adults.
  • Most antihistamines are also safe for children over 2 years old.
  • If you are breastfeeding or pregnant, ask your provider if antihistamines are safe for you.
  • Adults who take antihistamines should know how the medicine affects them before driving or using machinery.
  • If your child is taking antihistamines, make sure the medicine is not affecting your child’s ability to learn.

There may be special precautions for using antihistamines if you have:

  • Diabetes

Allergic rhinitis – antihistamine; Hives – antihistamine; Allergic conjunctivitis – antihistamine; Urticaria – antihistamine; Dermatitis – antihistamine; Eczema – antihistamine

Which Medications Are Unsafe After Their Expiration Date

There’s really no way to know if a drug is safe unless its tested for potency, but here are some common sense measures:

  • Insulin is used to control blood sugar in diabetes and may be susceptible to degradation after its expiration date.
  • Oral nitroglycerin , a medication used for angina , may lose its potency quickly once the medication bottle is opened.
  • Vaccines, biologicals or blood products could also be subject to quick degradation once the expiration date is reached.
  • Tetracycline may produce a toxic metabolite, but this controversial among researchers.8
  • Medicines that looks old: powdery or crumbling medicine, drugs with a strong smell, or dried up medicine should always be discarded, expired or not.
  • Any injectable medication, especially if cloudy, discolored or with visible floating particles.

What About Allergy Shots

Out of an abundance of caution, you should avoid getting any routine allergy shots on the same day as your COVID-19 vaccination, says Abinash Virk, M.D., an infectious disease expert at the Mayo Clinic.

The reason: There isnt enough research to determine whether getting the vaccine on the same day as an allergy shot is safe and effective, since any injection has the possibility, however faint, of messing with your bodys immune response. In this case, its just best to err on the side of caution. The recommended wait is similar to how we separate vaccines from the COVID-19 vaccine by 14 days, notes Dr. Virk. We recommend 48-hour separation from allergy shots to decrease the risk of adverse effects from the vaccine.

Experts at Penn Medicine, meanwhile, recommend separating shots by at least one full week. Ultimately, the decision will be up to you and your doctor, who knows your medical history and can take a personalized approach to your needs.

The same goes for prescription steroid medications for allergies, like Depo-Medrol and Kenalog, which have the potential to meddle with your immune systems reaction to the COVID-19 vaccines, Dr. Parikh says.

Is Mixing Allergy Meds Safe Can You Take Benadryl With Claritin

Most allergy medicines should not be combined with one another, according to Dr. Susan Besser, a primary care provider at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. You should not take multiple oral antihistamines together, such as Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra or Xyzal. Pick one and take it daily. These medicines work better to control symptoms if you take them daily, she explains.

Dr. Duane Gels, an allergist with Annapolis Allergy and Asthma in Annapolis, Maryland agrees that combining more than one oral antihistamine is unwise. Heres the problem with doubling up, says Dr. Gels. The FDA requires testing for these drugs to determine their safety, and the testing costs money. The Claritin folks will pay for safety studies in order to get their drug approved, and so will Allegra. But Claritin wont pay for studies showing its safe to take with Allegra. And Allegra wont pay for studies saying it is safe to take with Claritin.

But what if a patient just cant stop sneezing with one oral antihistamine?

How Long Will It Take For My Allergy Medication To Work

When youre experiencing allergy symptoms, you want to feel better and fast. But because each product works differently and treats specific symptoms, its important that you select one that will help you the most.

If youre looking for fast congestion relief, oral decongestants can start working in 15 to 30 minutes and nasal sprays can start alleviating congestion right away.

Antihistamines usually start working within 1 to 2 hours, depending on the product youre taking. You can also find antihistamine nasal sprays, like Astelin , that work in as little as 15 minutes.

Nasal steroids, on the other hand, take the longest to provide a benefit sometimes a few weeks. Thats why theyre better for symptom prevention instead of treating symptoms as they happen.

When To See A Doctor

Some side effects of taking antihistamines can mimic symptoms of an overdose. These include mild nausea, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain.

These symptoms dont usually require medical treatment, and may subside as your body adjusts to the medication. Even so, check with a doctor if you have side effects. You may need to reduce your dosage or take a different medication.

The difference between a side effect and an overdose is the severity of symptoms. Severe symptoms like rapid heart rate, tightness in the chest, or convulsions require a visit to the emergency room.

Antihistamines are safe when used properly. Here are some tips to avoid ingesting too much:

  • Dont take two different types of antihistamines simultaneously.
  • Dont take more than the recommended dosage.
  • Dont double up on doses.
  • Keep drugs out of reach of children.
  • Dont take two doses too close together.

Make sure you read labels carefully. Some antihistamines can interact with other drugs you take. If you dont know whether its safe to combine an antihistamine with another medication, speak with a doctor or pharmacist.

Be mindful that some antihistamines include other ingredients like a decongestant. If you take these types of antihistamines, its important that you dont take a separate decongestant.
