Offering A Positive Common

Before I was diagnosed with celiac, my son and I both loved to eat Chex cereal. I would use it in delicious snack mixes and as a hearty cereal.

Ive known for quite some time that Chex would be revamping the way they make their cereals. Now, the majority, if not all, of Chexs cereals are gluten-free. This is WONDERFUL for those with celiac or a gluten allergy as many gluten-free cereals can cost an arm and a leg for a very small box.

However, it is important to note that peanut flour is now included on the ingredient list on some of Chexs breakfast cereals. Again, for those with celiac or gluten allergy only, this may be a non-issue. For families with peanut, nut, or multiple food allergies, the ingestion of peanut flour could very well be life-threatening.

Kudos to Chex for making a mainstream cereal available to the gluten-free masses as close as their local grocery store. It would be just perfect if not for the peanut flour ingredient! For those without peanut flour in them, a call to the company would be in order to ask about cross contamination in production.

How To Make Chex Mix:

1. Add to bowl: Place the cereal, cheese crackers, pretzels and nuts into a large bowl.

2. Mix sauce ingredients: Mix together the melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion powder and cayenne.

3. Toss to coat: Slowly drizzle the butter mixture over the cereal, while tossing gently, to coat.

It was almost one year ago that I reported that Rice Chex was re-formulated to be gluten-free. Now it looks like some more gluten-free Chex cereals are coming to stores near you. Some people have found them already.

I spoke with General Mills customer service today to confirm that Corn Chex, Cinnamon Chex, Strawberry Chex, and Honey Nut Chex have also been re-formulated to be gluten-free. The General Mills representative said that if any of their cereals are gluten-free it will be clearly marked on the front and side of the box and that some cereals may be rolled out in only some parts of the country at first. Allergy friendly muddy buddies are so delicious! Chex cereal is coated in chocolate, sunbutter, and powdered sugar to make this a deliciously addictive treat!

Well, its Super Bowl Sunday in just two days. That snuck up on me! Not that I have any big plans or anythingwere not really football people. More like music nerds. 🙂 Anyway, I thought I would share a favorite, EASY, kid-friendly snack just in case you need something to whip up for a Super Bowl party. Or even if you just want to whip it up for yourself muddy buddies.

We love allergy friendly, gluten free muddy buddies. I have fond memories of making this snack in high school and college, and eating wayyyy more of it than I would be comfortable doing now! 🙂 I love making this for my boys to enjoy, using sunbutter in place of peanut butter.

I know this isnt a groundbreaking recipe or anything, but it is a family favorite, and I did want to share it with you! There are a couple of things you can do to make the original Chex recipe allergy friendly. The main thing is to use sunbutter, , and the second thing is that I eliminate the butter. You could use vegan butter spread if you want, but I have never used any butter in all the years that Ive made this, and I think it tastes great. Plus you lower the fat content if you skip the butter.

Does Chex Mix Use Shared Lines

While Traditional Chex Mix is dairy free, egg free, and nut free, there are other Chex Mix flavors that include milk or nuts, so I called General Mills to ask if they used shared lines. The woman I spoke with said they label anything that may contain one of the top 8 allergens with a May Contain statement. She said if it was made on the same lines, it would have that statement. There is no May Contain label on their packaging, so I take that as a green light for our family.

Yes, Fruity Pebbles are gluten free and labeled as such too. The Gluten Free label is seen on the side panel of the cereal box and under the ingredient list.

Fruity Pebbles are made from rice, sugar, oil and a whole bunch of food dye. No gluten in sight, and Nima is all smiles, assuring me that its gluten free.
