As a result of the LEAP study, new guidelines have been released to encourage early introduction of peanut foods. Research has shown that introducing peanut foods early to those infants who are at high risk reduced rates of developing peanut allergies by up to 86%. The Risk Of Casual Contact
In those who are especially sensitive, reactions to peanuts can occur from ingesting just a trace amount. This can cause anxiety, especially for the parents of peanut-allergic children. However, research shows that touching, smelling, inhaling airborne particles or just being near peanuts is highly unlikely to cause a severe reaction : 180-2.)
Smelling the aroma of peanuts is not the same as inhaling airborne peanut particles that could potentially contain the allergenic protein. What Are The Treatment Options For A Peanut Allergy
There is currently no treatment to prevent a peanut allergy. In some cases, children outgrow it over time.
The medication epinephrine is used to treat anaphylaxis. Children at risk for anaphylaxis should be prescribed an auto-injector of epinephrine and carry two doses with them at all times. Your child should use epinephrine right away if he or she has any severe symptoms, such as shortness of breath, hives, tightness in the throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing.
A New Option For Peanut Allergy
At UNC, my colleagues and I have been developing an alternative treatment called sublingual immunotherapy, or SLIT for short, using liquid peanut drops that are taken under the tongue. In our recently published long-term study of peanut SLIT, kids put two milligrams of peanut solution about 1/150th of a peanut under their tongue for two minutes daily. They continued this therapy for between three and five years, and afterwards almost 70% of the kids were able to safely eat two and half peanuts without suffering an allergic reaction. These drops have been tested by a multi-center NIH group called CoFAR and a study directly comparing the drops with the peanut flour was done at Johns Hopkins.

Why has it taken us this long to discover the wonders of peanut free peanut butter? Its probably in part because our childs first experience with peanut butter wasnt a good one. It was an in hospital food challenge for peanuts and that first little taste was enough to cause a serious reaction. Trying To Find A Cure
Immunotherapy for peanut allergy works by exposing the child to small, increasing amounts of peanut each day to retrain the immune system and make it less reactive. There are a few types of immunotherapy that differ based on how the child is exposed. Oral immunotherapy uses lightly roasted peanut flour that must be eaten. Whats called epicutaneous immunotherapy is administered using a peanut patch that is absorbed through the skin. Sublingual immunotherapy uses liquid peanut drops that are absorbed through the mouth.
Over the past 10 years, multiple studies have shown that oral immunotherapy using peanut flour can work. The Aimmune Therapeutics company completed the largest peanut oral immunotherapy study in the world. Also during the last decade, DBV Technologies developed its unique peanut patch and completed a multinational study of hundreds of peanut-allergic kids.
The Aimmune Therapeutics study of the oral treatment showed that the peanut flour protected 67% of the allergic kids from having allergic reactions after eating up to three and a half peanuts. Before starting treatment, less than one-third of a peanut would have triggered a reaction. But actually taking the peanut flour treatment required special timing and preparation that made it hard for some of the families. In addition, side effects like rash, stomach aches and vomiting prevented 12% of the kids from completing the treatment.
Eating Peanuts During Pregnancy
For expectant mothers, limited evidence suggests that eating peanuts during pregnancy may help to reduce the risk of a peanut allergy in the child. The Growing Up Today Study examined 10,907 children whose mothers provided dietary information while they were pregnant and within one year of pregnancy. Peanut allergies were significantly lower in the children of 8059 nonallergic mothers who consumed more peanuts than those who did not. More evidence is needed in this area. Maternal peanut consumption during pregnancy or lactation had no effect on developing allergy in one study, nor did duration of breastfeeding.

Unfortunately, peanut allergies tend to be lifelong. However, unrefined peanut oil still poses a risk of allergy due to retained proteins within the oil.23
A groundbreaking study demonstrated that the early introduction of peanuts could significantly reduce the risk of developing a peanut allergy later.24 Following the study, the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases now recommends that peanuts be introduced before a babys first birthday while considering any risk factors.25
As with all food allergens, its best to start small. Serve a scant amount during the first few meals and watch closely as reactions dont always occur at first. If there is no adverse reaction after several meals, gradually increase the quantity of the serving over next couple days.
