Cedar Season Returns To Texas Heres How To Survive The Symptoms

Fall pollen on the rise, mold count high | KVUE

AUSTIN, Texas â Itâs that time of year when the air leads to countless sneezes and runny noses. As of Thursday, cedar season has officially returned to Texas.

The dreaded mountain cedar pollen that often leads to “cedar fever” is ramping up. High counts have been detected of the tree pollen that causes major issues for many Texans around this time of the year. One in five Central Texans are dealing with cedar fever, according to Baylor, Scott and White Health.

The major symptoms are itchy eyes, itchy throat, runny nose and nasal congestion. Despite the name, a fever typically does not accompany the symptoms.

While it is difficult to project how much mountain cedar will end up in the atmosphere, we do know that certain weather conditions can maximize the pollen count.

In order to knock the pollen from the trees, you need strong surface winds. There also needs to be warm air in place to help lift the pollen into the air. Strong winds and warm air are both in the forecast in the weeks ahead.

Once the pollen is suspended in the atmosphere, mid-level winds help to transport the mountain cedar from the Texas Hill Country to places all over the state.

Our weather experts say based on the current forecast, mountain cedar pollen will likely increase, amplified by a warmer and drier than normal winter.

Tips on how to get through cedar season:

What Allergies Are High Texas

Common Seasonal Allergies in Texas

  • Ragweed Pollen. Ragweed is a plant that can produce up to one billion little pollen grains.
  • Cedar Tree Pollen. Cedar fever is quite a thing in Texas.
  • Grass Pollen. Just like ragweed and cedar trees, grass releases micro pollen grains into the atmosphere to fertilize other plants.
  • Mold.
  • What Time Of Day Do Trees Release Pollen

Generally, trees release pollen early in the morning around dawn and pollen counts near the source will be highest in the morning. Avoid outdoor activities, especially between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. Because tree pollen travels freely on warm, dry, windy days, pollen levels can often peak at the middle of the day.

Why Cedar Pollen Isnt Going Anywhere

A lot of folks might overboard. They might take out all of their Ashe juniper trees, which is not what we want to see, said woodland ecologist Karl Flocke with Texas A& M Forest Service. Removing Ashe juniper trees, which are the source of cedar fever, wont help your allergies.

First of all, there are just too many of them.

They occur on almost 63 million acres of land, which is over a third of the state, Flocke said.

Removing the ones that are nearby, say in your yard, wont actually help your allergies.

Because the pollen is spread by wind, Flocke said, the impact of taking out say, one tree from your backyard, two trees in your backyard, is not even a drop in the bucket.

Flocke said that a strong cold front can even cause cedar pollen, which is very small, to spread hundreds of miles and even to other states.

How Long Does It Take To Get Cedar Fever

Some people will never get it. Some people might get it the first year they move to Central Texas. Most people, though, need to go through a few seasons before they become allergic to the juniper pollen. It takes some exposure to produce the reaction.

Allergists typically don’t see babies with cedar fever, but will see kids 18 months to 2 years with their first bad cedar fever season. It tends to be worse in kids that have eczema or asthma, Overstreet said.

“If you feel like it’s impacting your life in any way, whether it be work, leisure or productivity, then it’s worth getting treated,” Overstreet said. Treatments start with testing to make sure cedar is the allergen that’s bothering you.

Texas Is One Of The Worst Places For Allergies And Heres Why

How to avoid getting Cedar Fever in Central Texas | KVUE

In 2011, I moved to Texas from North Georgia, where I enjoyed all sorts of outdoor activities including, hiking, biking, and camping, but never had any issues with allergies.

    How allergies started affecting me

That soon changed after I moved to Texas. During the first year I was fine and still maintained my hobbies outdoors however, by the second year, I began to experience seasonal sinus headaches, sinus drainage and congestion. This was all new to me and I didnât quite notice a pattern until my third year. But then I realized that I was not âimmuneâ to the great state of Texas.

The winter is what really sets Texas apart from other areas in terms of bad allergies. Most states endure cold snaps, snow, and regularly freezing temperatures that halts pollen from being spread in the air. In Texas however, the warm environment welcomes the Juniper tree to release its pollen in the air. This leads to Texasâ arguably worst allergy season to happen when a large chunk of the country isnât experiencing allergies at all.Instead of running away, you can still live here in beautiful Texas allergy free. There are plenty of ways to lessen the amount your allergies developed and allergy drops allow your body to build a resistance to these allergies so they no longer bother you.

    What Is Cedar Fever

Cedar fever is an allergy to a pollen. It’s not really cedar-related and doesnt typically come with a fever. Its triggered when the male Ashe juniper trees get excited to spread their pollen to the female Ashe juniper trees. They let the wind spread their pollen to all their female Ashe juniper friends far and wide.

Anyone who has been exposed to this Ashe juniper pollen over time might start feeling its effects.

What makes cedar fever so difficult compared with other allergies is the amount of allergens in the air. Cedar pollen counts can be in the 10,000 to 12,000 range on a bad day. A bad oak day would be 800, meaning 800 pollen grains landing in a defined area compared with 12,000 pollen grains for cedar. Austin has seen 20,000-plus cedar counts this year.

Monday Sees Highest Cedar Level Of The Season So Far

AUSTIN, Texas We’re currently in the peak of cedar season and our daily allergen count certainly reflects it.

Monday’s allergy count revealed the highest level of cedar so far this season with a total of 2,937 grains per cubic meter. The previous season high was recorded on Jan. 3 when cedar levels were 1,006 gr/m3.

This surge in cedar is due to the cold front that moved through Central Texas on Sunday. Gusty winds moved allergens from areas north of Central Texas into the KVUE viewing area.

The current forecast calls for breezy conditions to continue for Monday, with gusts around 20 mph possible. We expect cedar levels to remain “high” for at least the first half of the workweek.

The return of southerly flow for the back half of the workweek should help to lower the cedar level for Thursday and Friday. However, another cedar surge could be possible for the weekend and the start of next week as we track two cold fronts moving in from the north.

Cedar season typically lasts until early March but peaks in late December and January.

Austin cedar: The pollen will stay elevated, but not as ...

If you are sensitive to pollen allergies and move to Austin, prepare to suffer from cedar fever from December to March.

What exactly is cedar fever? Here is how Texas Monthly describes it:

But cedar fever is not just any allergy. Its a scourge, a plague that smites the just and the unjust who have the misfortune to live anywhere in a broad strip of Central Texas that stretches from the Red River to the Rio Grande.

    Yikes.

Actually, cedar fever is an allergy to the pollen of the Ashe juniper tree, which grows in abundance around central Texas. While not really a cedar tree, it is also known as Mountain cedar. Allergic reactions to this particular pollen grain can mimic the symptoms of the flu: inflammation, fatigue, headaches, clogged sinus and eye irritation.

The 2017 cedar season has been declared the worst on record by local allergists, including Dr. Robert Cook of Central Texas Allergy & Asthma. Cook told local news network KXAN that even people who havent experienced allergies before can develop them with one to six years of arriving in Austin.

This year could be especially bad for newcomers to Central Texas. Often, people who have only been in this area from 1-6 years dont see cedar effects. But on a bad year like this one, Dr. Cook says its possible that more people who would be prone to the allergen could develop full allergies to cedar.

But many more are required to endure regular allergy shots in order to escape the pain and discomfort of hives , swollen glands, respiratory issues, and more. Cluster immunotherapy ramps up the intensity of shots that patients receive. Generally, patients receiving this type of treatment in Austin TX must receive a course of injections over a period of weeks, as opposed to months. As a result, patients escape more allergy shots and get to experience the pleasures of a less allergy-filled life.

What You Need To Know About Cedar Fever

Austin and the surrounding Hill Country are well known for the mountain cedar tree which is known to cause Cedar Fever for many residents. The offending tree is actually a type of Juniper called Juniperus ashei. Cedar Fever is an allergic reaction to pollen from this Juniper tree. This tree has an aggressive seasonal bloom, and it is known for its spikey pollen. Under a microscope, the pollen looks like tiny grass burrs, which tend to stick to hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, nose hairs, clothing and pets. Cedar Fever is most common in December and January when the pollen counts are at their peak, but cases have been known to begin earlier and last through March. The airborne pollen granules may travel hundreds of miles, affecting Austin allergy sufferers, friends, and family all over Texas.

A few of the common symptoms include runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, nasal and sinus congestion and sneezing. Some also complain of fatigue, headache, facial discomfort, sore throat, partial loss of smell and the sensation of ear plugging. Some have mild symptoms, but for some, the symptoms can be so severe, they actually leave the area if they can.

Many are thrilled with this result, especially since this is not always the reason they initially sought care in our office. This all happens via the central nervous system which includes the brain and spinal cord. When a person is subluxated , the nervous system is irritated, and out of balance. This irritation can cause sympathetic dominance which excites the immune system to overreact to the pollen. And cedar is more aggressive than most of the tree allergens. So, the good news is that can really help! The earlier one seeks care, the better. When you are in a full-blown episode, it is more difficult to calm the body down.

There Are Many Other Things You Can Do To Help With Cedar Fever:

    • Building your immune system: Eat clean and healthy, more vegetables and fruits. Eat less processed foods. Avoid sugar. Supplement with Echinacea, vitamin C, turmeric, ginger, and Omega-3 Fatty Acids , and probiotics. We also carry a Cedar Serum made by BioStar which can really help you desensitize your overreaction to cedar. You want to start with this in November, if possible. Its never too late, but it pays to start early, and not when you are having a full-blown reaction.
    • During cedar season, you want to mechanically clean your surroundings of pollen: Change air filters, preferably with HEPA filters, and vacuum frequently. Whenever you come inside, rinse your face with cool water, and wipe your hair with a wet towel to remove whatever pollen you can. Dont forget to wipe your pets off with a damp towel after they have been outside. Use a Neti Pot to rinse the pollen from your nasal passages and sinuses. When you are home and know you wont be going out again, shower and change clothes to get the pollen off of you. Change pillowcases regularly so you dont put your face in pollen from your hair.
