Any Pa Problems With Candy Canes

Since it is christmas season, candy canes are a must. Is there any concern in buying candy canes for a peanut allergy? Are there “safe” brand names that need to be purchased?

    Thanks!

Sprangler and Bob Candies have told me this season that they are both peanut and tree nut free.Happy Holidays

Thanks toomanynuts.I wanted to buy more special-flavored candy canes and didn’t see the Spangler ones I bought before at Walmart. Guess they sold out of those. I did see Bob’s though. Will check them out when I go again.

Last night I found Disney Dum Dum Candy Canes by Spangler with strawberry, butterscotch and watermelon flavored canes. They have Mickey, Minnie and Pluto Wrappers so cute. Also, Starburst has flavored ones..I found Spangler candy cane mini wreaths as well.Happy Holidays

Those are the ones I got–Disney Dum Dum ones with the three flavors. I went back for more, and unfortunately, they were absolutely gone off the shelves!

We always buy Bob’s. I like the small ones and can usually only find them at the grocery store. My mil always buys the kids the big bob’s candy canes and they never finish one so it goes in the trash. That’s partly why I like the little ones.——————

I have ordered candy canes from Spangler online. It is an option if you can’t find them in the stores.

I found Hershey’s Chocolate mint candy canes. They have no warning. The are produced in Canada. Does Hershey’s always label for allergiens? Do you think these are safe?

Psa : Nut Allergy Warnings On Holiday Candy Packaging

Getting through the holidays with a nut allergy can be daunting. This afternoon I took a trip up to our local Target with my daughter, my 6 year old with a nut allergy was at school, we saw that the Valentines Day candy was out and decided to stop by and pick up some treats for the kids.

Ive been living with my childs nut allergy for the last 5 years, so this post is being prefaced with the knowledge that I do understand and know how to read labels. I check labels on everything I purchase.

This is my warning to parents who are purchasing holiday candy for their nut allergy children.

    read. every. single. label!

I dont care if its made from a brand that you trust with your life. Check every label.

I strolled by the Brachs Heartlines Tiny Conversation Hearts, there was a pile of about 25-30 bags laying there. I picked up a bag and looked at the back, the candy was made in Argentina with no warnings of being manufactured in a plant with nuts.

I picked up another bag. SAME EXACT PACKAGING sitting in the same exact pile. Same product, same packaging colors, everything looked the same.

Yet the second bag was manufactured in Canada and did contain a warning of being manufactured in a plant with peanuts and tree nuts.

I understand that companies mass produce candy around the holiday time and majority of the time, most candy is NOT safe because they pick a few plants and produce everything there.

    Avoiding Food Allergy Reactions

    Here

Even though Easter may still be a little different this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, one thing remains the same read labels every time on any food you give your child. Ingredients can vary for many reasons, especially on different sizes and treats in holiday packaging.

Also, remember that a holiday or celebration is not the best day to try new foods.

    How To Make Them

Make the dough as outlined in the recipe

    Step 2

Divide the dough in half. To do this, I scrape the sides of the mixing bowl and press the dough evenly in the bowl Then, I cut a line through the middle of the dough and scoop out half of it, and put it in a bowl.

    Step 3

Add the food coloring to the dough remaining in the mixing bowl and mix well.

    Step 4

Put the white and red dough in separate bowls and refrigerate for an hour or until firm.

    Step 5

Add flour to a large surface . Divide the white dough in half and divide the red dough in half and form each into a ball. Now you have two balls of red dough, and two balls of white dough.

Divide each color of dough in half so you have 2 of each.

    Step 6

Roll each of these balls into a log about 6 inches long.

Form each ball of dough into logs

    Step 7

Place a red log next to a white log. Then place the remaining white log on top of the red log and the remaining red log on top of the white log.

Gently squish the four logs together and roll until they are one log that is about a foot long. The diameter of the log should be about 2 inches. Push on each end so the diameter is the same from one end to the other.

Roll the four logs into one making a 2 inch diameter log.

    Step 8

Using a paring knife, cut ½ inch thick cookies and place them on a cookie sheet. Dip a small glass in sugar and press the cookie down slightly.

    Step 9

Sprinkle the candy cane bits on top of the cookies. Now its time to bake!
