If You Want A Decongestant

What causes nasal congestion to get worse at night? – Dr. Honey Ashok

If you dont have underlying health concerns that prevent you from taking a decongestant, heres how to stop feeling so dazed in the cold remedies aisle.

Know that there are two types of OTC decongestants, both of which constrict blood vessels, says Zhou.

Pseudoephedrine is OTC, but pharmacists have to keep it behind the counter and note its purchase . It not only constricts blood vessels, it also somewhat works on the lungs to help open those. It has two mechanisms of action that help you breathe better, she says.

Phenylephrine, the other main type of decongestant that you can just pluck off the shelf, doesnt have that lung action.

The trouble with these at night is that theyre stimulants. So for PM or nighttime formulations, drug companies add something to the meds that help you sleep. If you dont like or need those sedating additions, theres a hack you can try with daytime meds, says Zhou. Try taking a 12-hour formulation about 11 or 12 hours before you want to sleep. It may keep your nose from being blocked long enough to get you to sleep, and hopefully a stuffy nose wont awaken you in the middle of the night.

What about combination products? Those cold meds with something for cough, headache, and congestion? I like combination products if you truly need every ingredient in there, says Zhou. But in general, when it comes to cold medications, more isnt better. Get just the ingredients you need to breathe easier.

What Causes Allergic Rhinitis

When your body comes into contact with an allergen, it releases histamine, which is a natural chemical that defends your body from the allergen. This chemical can cause allergic rhinitis and its symptoms, including a runny nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes.

In addition to tree pollen, other common allergens include:

  • grass pollen

What Causes Allergy Symptoms To Feel Worse At Night

Sleeping on your back often encourages the flow of postnasal drip into the throat, causing a tickle in your throat as you sleep. Nasal blockages and runny noses are common occurrences among people with allergies, and they disrupt sleep during night. As we lie down, the mucus in our nose travels backward toward the throat. This can, in turn, lead to coughing and make it hard to sleep. Allergens on the bed may irritate the skin and cause itching on any part of the body .

Research was conducted on how chemicals released during the body’s immune response to allergens affect allergy symptoms at night and disrupt sleep. The sleep-wake cycle, which controls the cadence of sleep and wakefulness, is controlled by a large number of hormones. Some of these hormones are also involved in regulating allergic reactions. A reason why allergies are worse, particularly at night, is that certain allergy-regulating hormones dip when you approach deeper stages of sleep.

Throat Tickle Caused By Acid Reflux

Many people refer to acid reflux as heartburn and it happens when some stomach acid leaks back into the esophagus.

Dr. Tim Kenny on says that one symptom of acid reflux is a persistent cough and wheeze.9 While the natural remedies for a tickly throat can help to manage the symptoms, if acid reflux is to blame, then you should treat that.

However, some of the remedies for treating a tickly throat and cough can also help you to treat acid reflux and sour stomach.

In one study, aloe vera syrup successfully treated and reduced the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux .10 For example, drinking 1/4 cup of aloe vera juice about 20 minutes before a meal can help reduce the burning sensation and also help relieve itching in your throat.

Apple cider vinegar can also help relieve a tickle in your throat and at the same time provide heartburn relief. To use apple cider vinegar for acid reflux, you should mix 1 or 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar with a glass of water and drink it before meals or whenever heartburn strikes.

You can also use baking soda for acid reflux as Ive mentioned in this article or these natural remedies.

There are many treatments that can curb allergies, including allergy shots, she adds.
