Nut Allergy And Pesto
Hi allQuestion for all nut allergy sufferers – once diagnosed, did you let your child continue to eat things they always have done which they have had no problem with?I ask because my ds is allergic to brazil nuts, but we haven’t yet had the test for cashews among other things . Since he was tiny, he has adored pesto pasta and has eaten it at least once a week. The brand I buy has cashews in it, and he has never had a reaction to it, but now I am too nervous to give it to him as lots of advice says even if allergic to one nut, avoid all nuts. He is so unhappy about this – it is his real comfort food! Any advice would be gratefully received! Beggsie
Could you make your own pesto?Ds is allergic to peanuts and hazelnuts. He sometimes has fruit bars with almonds which, I think , is the only thing with other nuts that he has regularly. We were told to be careful with other nuts because peanuts are ‘dirty nuts’ and can contaminate others.
Thanks for your responses. I have thought about making my own pesto but frankly would rather not if I don’t have to! Maybe I will try to hang out till we have the tests and cross fingers that I get similar advice to tinytalker. Thanks again.
tesco’s finest has pine nuts, however my dh is allergic to brasil nuts and has no problems with the cashew ones. My DS is allergic to most tree nuts so I tend to avoid them for him.

Tree Nuts And Food Labeling Laws
Tree nuts are one of the;most common food allergies, and as such, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires manufacturers selling foods in America to label foods containing tree nuts. The;Food Allergy Labeling and Consumer Protection Act; requires that manufacturers label which tree nut is in a given product.
Manufacturers are not required to mention the presence of tree nuts on manufacturing lines. Many do, however, due to consumer pressure. Because of the possibility of anaphylaxis, people with tree nut allergies should avoid products that mention the;possibility;of tree nut cross-contamination on labels.
Remember to alwaysread your food packaging and ingredient labels, since ingredients and manufacturing practices can change at any time.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Nut Allergy
Both peanuts and tree nuts can cause allergic reactions. Allergic reactions to nuts can vary from mild to very severe, and are sometimes life-threatening. Symptoms often start very quickly, within an hour of having come into contact with a nut, and sometimes within minutes. Reactions that take place more than four hours after coming into contact with nuts are unlikely to be an allergy.
Signs and symptoms of a mildallergic reaction can include:
- Your mouth and lips tingling.
- Your face swelling.
- Colicky pains in your tummy .
- A feeling of tightness around your throat.
Signs and symptoms of a more severeallergic reaction can include:
- All of the above.
- Wheezing or difficulty breathing due to an asthma-like attack, or swelling around your throat.
- A sense of impending doom.
- Dilation of your blood vessels, which can cause:
- General redness of your skin.
- A fast heart rate.
- Low blood pressure, which can cause you to feel faint or to collapse.
This severe reaction is called anaphylaxis and without quick treatment you would soon become unconscious. A small number of people die every year as a result of this kind of severe reaction, usually because they do not obtain treatment quickly enough. If you think you are having an anaphylactic reaction you need to call an ambulance straightaway and obtain immediate medical help.

This Vegan Pesto Is Also Nut
I get that pesto purists are going to argue that vegan pesto is not real pesto, that nut-free pesto is not real pesto, that pesto must contain basil, pine nuts, garlic, and a grated hard cheese like Parmesan, no exceptions. But the thing about that pesto is that it’s not very friendly to people who can’t eat dairy or nuts. And if said people are already suffering from a nut allergy or the inability to eat cheese, it is basically criminal to deny them pesto as well.
Enter this golden raisin pesto. Yes… I said “raisin pesto.” Senior food editor Andy Baraghani, the man responsible for this blasphemous-yet-delicious vegan pesto, didn’t set out to create an allergy-friendly dish. He just wanted a sauce that would cut through the rich, gamey taste of lamb meatballs. But, it turns out, just as nuts can turn chopped herbs and cheese into a luxurious, silky sauce, raisins can do the same.
Don’t be fooledthis pesto doesn’t taste like dessert at all. The recipe uses a lot of herbsmint and parsley, to be exactto keep the sweetness of the raisins in check. The pesto goes great on the lamb, of course, but I also stirred it into plain yogurt and ate it on toast, and it would be amazing as a sauce for fish. Plus, leftovers are ideal for spooning directly from the jar when you can’t sleep at 3:26 a.m. .
And, if you really don’t love raisins, Baraghani suggests swapping them with another dried fruit like figs, apricots, or dried cherries.
The Proteins Are Very Different
If you have latex allergy you should limit or avoid future exposure to latex. Storing the pesto flattened in freezer bags allows you to break off smaller pieces of the frozen pesto if you just need a small amount for a recipe or meal. An allergy to peanuts, however, is if a person has a nut allergy, their body will react badly to eating tree nuts. To answer your question, unless you eat the squirrel before it’s digested the nuts, there will be no problems. If you experience adverse reactions. For this reason, it’s essential that anyone with a tree nut allergy learn the symptoms of anaphylactic shock. You can make pesto with or without nuts. Pine nut allergies are similar to other tree nut allergies, and can cause mild, moderate, and severe allergic responses including anaphylaxis. Treat nut allergies can be diagnosed in childhood and adulthood. Basil is not a common according to the food network, basil pesto may contain milk and tree nuts that can trigger an allergic reaction. Sacla’ pesto sauce containing cashews has been recalled from all major uk supermarkets including asda, sainsbury’s and morrisonscredit: Probably best known for their use in pesto sauce, pine nuts have a very delicate taste and texture and are high in. If you also have asthma, you have a higher risk for a severe allergic reaction.

Pesto Crisis: Is The Uks Recall System Fit For Purpose
But as we ponder this culinary conundrum, lets all spare a thought for peanut allergy sufferers. While most of us will soon see pesto return to shelves, theyll be unable to eat it. Because rather than reformulate or find a new supply of uncontaminated cashews, Saclà, Sainsburys and Tesco have all chosen to re-label their pesto with warnings it may contain peanuts. It means people with a peanut allergy will be forced to either opt for more expensive pesto made with pine nuts – or ditch it from their diets. So yet again, allergen sufferers are those paying the highest price. And that just seems like an unfair cop-out.
The Easiest Way To Make Pesto Nut Free
Something I don’t suggest is packing all the ingredients into the blending cup of a small rocket type blender . I had to stop it and mix it frequently. It didn’t have enough liquid or enough room to really chop everything easily. Using a standard small food processor would’ve saved some time and aggravation.

If you are able to eat seeds, sunflower seeds are a great alternative as they provide a bit of crunch like pine nuts. You may also like pumpkin or other squash/gourd seeds as well to provide a different texture.
If nuts and seeds are a no-go for you, I highly recommend both chickpeas or white cannellini beans. I personally prefer chickpeas because they mix well and make for a thicker pesto that sticks well to pastas.

Treatment For Nut Allergies
The best way to treat an allergy to nuts is to prevent a reaction by staying away from them. Read menus and food labels very carefully when eating out or shopping.
New studies looking for treatment of peanut allergies have found that peanut immunotherapy drops administered under the tongue are safe and effective as treatment for peanut allergy, even in children as young as 1. They were also found to help significantly desensitize the patients to peanuts.
If you accidentally eat something with nuts in it, watch for signs of a serious allergic reaction , like trouble breathing or swallowing, tightness in your chest, stomach pain, vomiting, or a feeling of doom. These reactions can be life-threatening and need medical attention right away. You should:
- Lie down flat on your back.
- If you have epinephrine, use it and repeat after 5 to 15 minutes if your symptoms havenât gotten better.
If you have a nut allergy, carry two epinephrine auto-injectors at all times, and know how to use them.
Children with serious peanut allergies may benefit from using the drug Palforzia, which can help lessen symptoms theyâre exposed.
