Hi allQuestion for all nut allergy sufferers – once diagnosed, did you let your child continue to eat things they always have done which they have had no problem with?I ask because my ds is allergic to brazil nuts, but we haven’t yet had the test for cashews among other things . Since he was tiny, he has adored pesto pasta and has eaten it at least once a week. The brand I buy has cashews in it, and he has never had a reaction to it, but now I am too nervous to give it to him as lots of advice says even if allergic to one nut, avoid all nuts. He is so unhappy about this – it is his real comfort food! Any advice would be gratefully received! Beggsie

Could you make your own pesto?Ds is allergic to peanuts and hazelnuts. He sometimes has fruit bars with almonds which, I think , is the only thing with other nuts that he has regularly.We were told to be careful with other nuts because peanuts are ‘dirty nuts’ and can contaminate others.

tesco’s finest has pine nuts, however my dh is allergic to brasil nuts and has no problems with the cashew ones. My DS is allergic to most tree nuts so I tend to avoid them for him.

Manufacturers are not required to mention the presence of tree nuts on manufacturing lines. Many do, however, due to consumer pressure. Because of the possibility of anaphylaxis, people with tree nut allergies should avoid products that mention the;possibility;of tree nut cross-contamination on labels.

Ingredients In Nut Free Pesto

Minced Garlic– Fresh garlic works best for flavor, but dehydrated or jarred minced garlic will work too.

Fresh Basil – 1 cup of very tightly packed fresh basil leaves is needed for this recipe. If you don’t love the flavor of basil, you can use fresh spinach leaves instead, but the flavor will be much more mild.

Olive Oil – Use more or less to get the consistency the way you want it. Use the best extra virgin olive oil you have for this recipe. It makes a difference.

Lemon Juice– Freshly squeezed lemon juice adds acidity and brightness to our pesto

Sunflower Seeds – These little seeds are packed with flavor and are our substitution in this nut-free pesto.

Salt and Pepper – add to taste.

    Ive tried many different nut substitutions in basil pestos over the years .

    If you are able to eat seeds, sunflower seeds are a great alternative as they provide a bit of crunch like pine nuts. You may also like pumpkin or other squash/gourd seeds as well to provide a different texture.

    If nuts and seeds are a no-go for you, I highly recommend both chickpeas or white cannellini beans. I personally prefer chickpeas because they mix well and make for a thicker pesto that sticks well to pastas.

    The best way to treat an allergy to nuts is to prevent a reaction by staying away from them. Read menus and food labels very carefully when eating out or shopping.
