Crohn’s And Ulcerative Colitis

137 Inflammatory bowel disease patients compared to 50 healthy controls. IgG food sensitivity antibodies were detected in 57.5% of Ulcerative Colitis patients, in 90.72% of Crohn’s disease patients. Rice, corn, tomato and soybean intolerance were most common . Antigen Leukocyte Cellular Antibody Test

The ALCAT test is the predecessor of the MRT test, but many healthcare practitioners and labs still offer it.

To assess what foods may be provoking a reaction for you, it only measures changes in the sizes of your white blood cells when exposed to individual food antigens, which may decrease accuracy.

When people with IBS followed a diet based on their ALCAT test results for four weeks, they reported twice the reduction in certain IBS symptoms, such as abdominal pain and bloating, compared to people following a placebo diet .

However, those who followed ALCAT-based diets didnt rate their IBS relief as being adequate or significantly improving their quality of life during the study .

Summary

Cell-based blood tests, including the MRT and ALCAT, assess changes in your white blood cells when exposed to food antigens. Some practitioners report the tests are helpful in identifying food sensitivities, but both require further study.

What Do The Results Mean

Food Allergy Testing

If the results show that you or your child has a food allergy, the treatment is to avoid the food.

There is no cure for food allergies, but eliminating the food from your diet should prevent allergic reactions.

Avoiding allergy-causing foods can involve carefully reading labels on packaged goods. It also means you need to explain the allergy to anyone who prepares or serves food for you or your child. This includes people like waiters, babysitters, teachers, and cafeteria workers. But even if you are careful, you or your child may be exposed to the food by accident.

If you or your child is at risk for a severe allergic reaction, your allergist will prescribe an epinephrine device you can use if accidentally exposed to the food. You’ll be taught how to inject the device in your or your child’s thigh.

Food Intolerance Testing: Does It Work

Reputable food allergy tests are available through physician specialists known as allergists or immunologists, but there are no reliable tests for food intolerances. However, some independent labs have produced their own blood testing systems that they claim can identify food intolerances, which are available at a select number of retail pharmacies or health food stores. However, the medical science community has raised concerns regarding the efficacy of these testing systems, so medical doctors will rarely ask you to go for these, often expensive, tests that produce questionable results.

The Investigations Committee of the Quebec College of Physicians warns against medical professionals recommending these testing systems to their patients. The Committee observes that labs promoting food intolerance testing present non-validated conclusions. They reaffirm the duty of licensed medical professionals to only administer any sort of testing when medically necessary, and that there is a greater need to be critical of data coming from unrecognized sources or from promotional material.8

How The Test Is Performed

There are three common methods of allergy skin testing.

The skin prick test involves:

  • Placing a small amount of substances that may be causing your symptoms on the skin, most often on the forearm, upper arm, or back.
  • The skin is then pricked so the allergen goes under the skin’s surface.
  • The health care provider closely watches the skin for swelling and redness or other signs of a reaction. Results are usually seen within 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Several allergens can be tested at the same time. Allergens are substances that cause an allergic reaction.

The intradermal skin test involves:

  • Injecting a small amount of allergen into the skin.
  • The provider then watches for a reaction at the site.
  • This test is more likely to be used to find out if you’re allergic to bee venom or penicillin. Or it may be used if the skin prick test was negative and the provider still thinks that you’re allergic to the allergen.

Patch testing is a method to diagnose the cause of skin reactions that occur after the substance touches the skin:

  • Possible allergens are taped to the skin for 48 hours.
  • The provider will look at the area in 72 to 96 hours.

What Is Leaky Gut

Leaky gut, also called intestinal permeability, occurs when your intestinal lining develops tiny holes in the epithelial junctions and undigested food particles can now leak into your blood stream.

This causes major immune system alarm, and it overreacts by tagging food as enemy invaders. IgG antibodies are produced every time you eat that food. If you produce IgG antibodies in response to eating a certain food you become inflamed. The inflammation manifests as different symptoms for everyone.

For me it was anxiety and slight weight gain.

It turns out that I am sensitive to ginger. And black pepper.

There is a higher tendency to develop sensitivities to foods you eat frequently. I ate grated pickled ginger on a daily basis to boost my digestion.

Ginger is healthy for most people, but for me it is inflammatory. I had no idea.

Eggs were also on the list. As was cow dairy But thankfully, I have no problem with goat, sheep and buffalo dairy.

Almonds and cashews were also on the list, and things I consumed daily.

    What Is Food Allergy

    Eating exposes the immune system to many different food proteins. The immune system learns to recognize and remember food proteins and typically considers them harmless. Food allergy happens when the immune system treats specific food proteins as harmful. Food proteins that can trigger allergic reactions are called food allergens.

    The most common type of food allergy can develop when the immune system makes a type of antibody against certain food proteins. These antibodies are called immunoglobulin E and are also known as IgE antibodies. IgE antibodies interact with the cells of the immune system that contain inflammatory messengers like histamine.

    When a person with food allergy eats their food allergen, IgE antibodies trigger a sudden, fast release of very large amounts of histamine and other inflammatory messengers into body tissues. These inflammatory messengers cause the inflammation that triggers allergic reactions. They can affect the skin, the respiratory tract , the gastrointestinal system and/or the cardiovascular system .

    The signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction can include hives, swelling, wheezing, coughing, difficulty breathing, vomiting, faintness, weakness and passing out. The symptoms often come on quickly.

    Introduce Solid Foods Gradually

    Feeding your baby solids is fun. You get to see their reactions to certain foods and find out what they like and dislike. Its one more milestone for parents to check off their lists. However, introducing solids should be done carefully.

    When you do decide to start introducing solid foods to your newborn, make sure that you take your time. While it is tempting to let your child try a little bit of this and a little bit of that, it has the potential to cause complications. This is because introducing solids is essentially how you test for allergens.

    For this reason, doctors recommend introducing babies to new foods one at a time. This way, if an allergic reaction does occur, youll be able to exactly pinpoint which food it was that caused the reaction.

    The American Academy of Pediatrics says that between the ages of 4 and 6 months is the optimal time to begin introducing solid foods. This is when babies start showing signs of readiness, which means that their bodies are ready. Some of these signs include sitting up with support, having control of their head and neck movements, showing interest in what youre eating and no longer having the reflex of pushing food out of his or her mouth.

    Its important to start incorporating solid foods at this time because otherwise, your baby will get overly accustomed to liquids and loose the interest of learning how to eat solids.

    When its time to start introducing solid foods, it means its also time to start testing your newborn for food allergies. The two go hand-in-hand. However, youre introducing new foods, continue to breastfeed for other meals. This will help reduce the chances of food allergies due to the immune properties in the breast milk.

    How Accurate Is The Testing

    The gold standard for identifying food sensitivities is an elimination diet followed by an oral challenge of eating the eliminated foods one by one after a period of avoidance to determine your reaction ideally without you knowing whats being tested .

    If you dont follow an elimination diet before the oral challenge for food sensitivities, your symptoms in response to consuming a food antigen may be masked or hard to detect.

    When you stop eating a problem food, you may have temporary withdrawal symptoms. You might have to follow an elimination diet for about two weeks before these symptoms clear up and youre ready to start testing foods in an oral challenge.

    Following an elimination diet requires dedication and commitment, as well as careful record-keeping. You must know the ingredients of everything you eat, which makes eating out difficult.

    The foods you avoid in an elimination diet vary. Some practitioners may only have you eliminate foods suspected to be a problem, such as dairy and wheat products.

    Others may have you eliminate all but a few foods for a short period, such as two weeks, and then slowly reintroduce them.

    To reduce the guesswork as to which foods are problematic, some practitioners first give you a food sensitivity test to help guide your elimination diet.

    Detailed Health History And Physical Exam

    The health history and physical exam determines how likely a food allergy is the cause of a personâs symptoms after eating a food. The history also helps to identify which foods should be suspected. It is the most important step to a diagnosis because it helps to determine which foods to test, if any. Sometimes, the health history and physical exam will show that food allergy tests are not needed.

    Who Should Test For Food Sensitivities

    I did the test for professional curiosity, but there were also reasons to suspect I had silent food intolerances.

    I took the GI Map a month prior and it revealed a significantly leaky gut.

    A leaky gut increases your chance of developing food sensitivities. According to the GI Map, for the first time ever I developed a gluten intolerance, which made me suspect further intolerances.

    My gut became leaky as a result of mold illness, which often causes leaky gut and immune system dysfunction. I had lived in an apartment with black mold a few months prior, then moved into a new apartment that also had previous water damage.

    So I wanted to see how leaky gut affected my food tolerance and if cows dairy was an issue for me. I eat a lot of cow dairy and never experience any obvious symptoms, but testing would be a definitive way to know.
