Allergy Tests Without A Doctors Exam Usually Are Not Reliable
Many drugstores and supermarkets offer free screenings. And you can even buy kits to test for allergies yourself at home. But the results of these tests may be misleading.
- The tests may say you have an allergy when you do not. This is called a false positive.
- These free tests and home tests for food allergies are not always reliable.
Allergy Testing & Treatment
When an allergic reaction occurs, the immune system starts fighting substances that are usually harmless as though these substances were trying to attack the body. This overreaction can cause a variety of symptoms, such as a rash, itchy eyes, runny nose, trouble breathing, nausea, and diarrhea. But heres the good news
You dont have to suffer!
Medicentres is now offering allergy treatment and immunotherapy to our Edmonton area patients! Speak to your family doctor or contact us directly to arrange allergy treatment and: END THE SUFFERING!
What Type Of Sample Do You Need
We need a blood sample and we offer two types of sample collection. For more rapid reactions and food allergies, we usually need to draw two vials of blood and we do this in-house. For slower acting food sensitivity testing we can often use a fingerprick collection which usually needs only 10-15 drops of blood.

Extended Alberta Health Care Coverage Plans
Although AHCIP is a great basic healthcare insurance coverage plan, it can prove very limiting for Alberta residents. As you have seen, there are many expensive medical services that are not covered under AHCIP or have limited coverage. To protect yourself against the burdens of bearing high costs for services that have been delisted from the AHCIP coverage, you can opt for a private insurance plan to go along with your provincial healthcare insurance.
Without an extended healthcare package, you can expect to pay hundreds of dollars out of your own pocket for ambulance services, psychological services, hearing aids, dental and more. Extended Alberta health care coverage plans can also remove some of the location-based limitations AHCIP has, in that they can allow you to avail those services outside of Alberta.
Consider the following costs to evaluate if an extended healthcare package along with AHCIP makes sense for you:
- Ambulance services: $200 to $800 or more
- Home nursing care: Up to $75 per hour
- Podiatrist: Up to $50 per visit
- Chiropractor: Up to $75 per visit
- Psychologist: Up to $150 per hour
- Wheelchair: Rental $50 to $200 per month, purchase $1,000 to $2,000.
When youre ready to upgrade the healthcare plan for your loved ones and yourself, we at Insurdinary.ca can help you pick out the best extended insurance plan for your needs. Contact us today.

Health insurance companies often pay money towards the cost of desensitisation, although this varies between health care providers. You will need to talk to your health insurance company to check.

Which Specific Allergy Tests Are Covered By Medicare
Now that you know the basics of allergy test coverage, lets dig deeper. Medicare makes things even more complicated when it comes to allergy testing by only covering specific types of tests. These tests have been proven to provide effective and accurate results for certain types of allergens.
Skin tests that involve scratching, pricking or puncturing are the most common types of skin tests. They are technically called percutaneous tests. These tests can be covered by Medicare when IgE-mediated reactions occur to the following types of suspected allergens, according to the AMA:
- Insects that sting
- Specific types of drugs, like penicillins
Sometimes, further testing will be needed if the scratch, prick or puncture tests show up negative. Tests that involve injecting a small amount of the allergen into your skin may be necessary, based on your clinicians findings. This type of test is technically called intradermal, or intracutaneous, testing. These tests may be covered when the following types of suspected allergens cause IgE-mediated reactions occur, according to the AMA:
- Insects that sting
- Specific types of drugs
Challenge food testing can also be covered by Medicare for food allergy testing, as long as it is used on an outpatient basis and is deemed reasonable and necessary for the patient, according to the Medicare National Coverage Determinations Manual.

Will Insurance Pay For Food Sensitivities Testing
Reader question: Any advice as to how I ask my physician to do the MRT for food allergies . Thanks. ~ Lisa, Paradise, CA
Heres the situation:
Most physicians do not study nutrition in medical school or afterward. Additionally, they have limited time to meet with each patient. Hence, they do not have the time or knowledge to work with the tested patient to correctly design and manage a healthy, anti-inflammatory diet that is satisfying and sustainable enough to promise long-term results. Signet Diagnostic, the laboratory behind the MRT and the LEAP dietary management program, recognized that and instead of spending a lot of money hiring a sales force to visit physicians and educate them about the value of this test, they decided to work with Registered Dietitians, Nutritionists, and nutrition professionals to create Certified LEAP Therapists who already understand the fundamentals and role of nutrition in overall health.
Some physicians are more holistic and understand the value of this testing and the efficacy of a customized dietary plan, but still dont have the time needed to work together with a patient to customize a dietary plan. These physicians may authorize the blood draw and the test, and then you can submit the bill to your insurance carrier and pay for the nutrition counseling separately.
I like to look at it this way: For less than $1,000 you could feel better for the rest of your life. Isnt that worth it?
