What Candy Is Safe For Nut Allergies

What Candy Can Kids With Allergies Eat

Teal Pumpkin Ideas + Allergy-Friendly Candy Ideas

*Please note that people can have allergies to ANY food. This means that no food is ever completely allergy-free. In this blog, youll find the best Christmas candy companies that offer some combination of the top 9 allergy-free goodies.

First of all, with food allergies, there are always precautions you need to take. Here are 3 simple ways to be extra safe with any allergy-free Christmas candy.

  • Be sure to read EVERY SINGLE LABEL, EVERY SINGLE TIME. Labels can change anytime and its always important to read the label before gifting any candy, whether it says allergy-free or not.

  • 2. If you are buying for a food allergy child that isnt your own, PLEASE double-check with their parents before gifting any allergy-free Christmas candy. This is so important because ingredient labels can be difficult to read and if youre not used to reading labels its very easy to make a mistake. So always ask a parent first.

    3. If your child or the child youre buying for cannot eat foods made on shared lines with their allergens, its very important to call the companies & research to ensure their candy will be safe for your child. Although these are the most allergy-friendly Christmas candy companies I know, I have not verified them by phone or asked about shared lines. Please be sure to do this if required for your family.

    Recommended Snacks To Consider Bringing

So what kinds of foods are good to bring to a peanut- or nut-free classroom?

It’s difficult to recommend specific brands of snacks, with the exception of one dedicated nut-free company , because ingredients and manufacturing practices can and do change without notice. Your school may provide a list of acceptable snacks, though, and one good source for current information will be the parent of the classmate with the nut allergy. Always check labels on packaged foods.

    Here are some recommended snacks:

Potato Chips Corn Chips Tortilla Chips And Pretzels

Here are all the potato chips flavors and brands that are peanut free :

    Cape Cod

    • sour cream and green onion

    Enjoy Life

    • dill and sour cream lentil chips

Important Note About Allergy Friendly Candy

Now, as with all things food allergy: PLEASE consultant the parent of the food-allergic child before buying or feeding them anything. Unfortunately, there arent many hard and fast rules when it comes to food allergies, and each parent may feel comfortable with different things. For example, some allergies are so severe that they have to call each manufacturer to find out what is processed on the same lines, as its not a federal requirement to list if there is a may contain warning. I have not made any calls on behalf of these candies. I went strictly off labels, and the fact that my kids have eaten these many times without any issues*for our particular and individual circumstances*. Only YOU can protect you, right? MMM-K thanks.

    Happy and SAFE snacking!

Allergic Reactions To Peanuts And Tree Nuts Spike 85 Percent On Halloween

Food Allergy 101: Peanut Allergy Symptoms | Peanut Allergy Reaction

Parents and children can avoid the dangers by taking key precautions and embracing alternative activities

    Daily Correspondent

When Rachel Chang was growing up in Westchester, New York, Halloween wasnt always as sweet as it was for other kids. She and her two younger brothers have severe allergies to dairy and nuts, making the holidayand the treats that go along with ita challenge. They made their own version of their favorite candies with dairy-free chocolate and her parents would trade candies they knew were safe with the ones she and her brothers collected while trick-or-treating. They never tried new sweets while out and about, knowing the stakes were high because their allergic reactions include vomiting, swelling and difficulty breathingand, left untreated, the effects can be life-threatening.

It was hard in school when people would bring in candy, says Chang. The kids didn’t understand and the teachers didn’t understand quite as well as they do now either. So my family had to adapt over the years to figure out ways to still make Halloween fun and inclusive and safe.

People don’t realize that children have been left out of traditional Halloween parties, or the trick-or-treating process, says Lisa Gable, chief executive officer of Food Allergy Research and Education. It can be a very frightening time.

One reason for the jump in allergic reactions on Halloween may be due to the type of food kids are eating: mini and one-bite candies.

What Oils Are Made From Nuts

    Some Nut

Nut and seed oils are essential ingredients for the cook. Oils provide fat for browning and consistency, and many nut and seed oils have a distinct flavor. Nut oils are beneficial to your health. Monounsaturated fats are abundant in olive oil, while saturated fats are abundant in palm and coconut oils. Although there are general-purpose oils, they can be separated into two types: cooking oils, which have a neutral flavor and can resist heat, and seasoning oils, which are best used to flavor uncooked dishes like salads. Soy and corn oils are good for cooking walnut and hazelnut oils can be cooked but are best used as seasoning oils.

Living With Peanut Or Tree Nut Allergy

If allergy skin testing shows that you have a peanut or tree nut allergy, an will provide guidelines on what to do.

The best way to prevent a reaction is to avoid peanuts and tree nuts. Avoiding nuts means more than just not eating them. It also means not eating any foods that might contain tree nuts or peanuts as ingredients.

The best way to be sure a food is nut free is to read the label. Manufacturers of foods sold in the United States must state on their labels whether foods contain peanuts or tree nuts. Check the ingredients list first.

After checking the ingredients list, look on the label for phrases like these:

    • “may contain tree nuts”
    • “produced on shared equipment with tree nuts or peanuts”

People who are allergic to nuts should avoid foods with these statements on the label. Although these foods might not use nut ingredients, the warnings are there to let people know the food may contain small traces of nuts. That can happen through something called “cross-contamination.” This is when nuts get into a food product because it is made or served in a place that uses nuts in other foods. Manufacturers are not required to list peanuts or tree nuts on the label when there might be accidental cross-contamination, but many do.

Some of the highest-risk foods for people with peanut or tree nut allergy include:

    What Else Should I Know

    Here

Here are other things to remember:

    • Watch for cross-contamination that can happen on kitchen surfaces and utensils everything from knives and cutting boards to the toaster. Make sure the knife another family member used to make peanut butter sandwiches is not used to butter your bread and that nut breads are not toasted in the same toaster you use.
    • Avoid cooked foods you didn’t make yourself anything with an unknown list of ingredients.
    • Tell everyone who handles the food you eat, from relatives to restaurant waitstaff, that you have a nut allergy. If the manager, chef, or owner of a restaurant is uncomfortable about your request for peanut- or nut-free food preparation, don’t eat there.
    • Make school lunches and snacks at home where you can control the preparation.
    • Be sure your school knows about your allergy and has an action plan in place for you.
    • Keep rescue medicine on hand at all times not in your locker, but in a pocket, purse, or bookbag that’s always with you.

Living with a food allergy can seem hard at times. But as more and more people are diagnosed with food allergies, businesses and restaurants are increasingly aware of the risks they face.

If friends you’re visiting or eating lunch with don’t know about your food allergy, tell them in plenty of time to make some simple preparations . Chances are, they’ll understand. As your friends, they probably hope you’ll be as considerate when it comes to taking care of them!
