Can You Be Allergic To Some Tree Nuts And Not Others

Diagnosing nut allergies: Should all tree nuts be avoided?

You can be allergic to one, some or many kinds of tree nuts.

If you have an allergy to one particular tree nut, you may also be allergic to other types of tree nuts that contain a similar protein. For example, if you are allergic to almonds, you will most likely be allergic to hazelnuts as well. The same is true with walnuts and pecans, as well as pistachios and cashews. Nearly 50% of children who are allergic to one tree nut are allergic to another tree nut as well.

Talk to your doctor if you think you may have a nut allergy, and avoid all tree nuts until your doctor figures out which ones cause allergic reactions in you.

Unorthodox Allergy Tests Are Unproven

There are several methods of unorthodox tests for food allergy. Examples include cytotoxic food testing, Vega testing, kinesiology, allergy elimination techniques, iridology, pulse testing, Alcat testing, Rinkel’s intradermal skin testing, reflexology, hair analysis and IgG food antibody testing. These tests have no scientific basis, are unreliable and can’t be reproduced. ASCIA advises against the use of these tests. No Medicare rebate is available in Australia for these tests, and their use is not supported in New Zealand.

Adverse consequences may arise from unorthodox testing and treatments. Treatment based on inaccurate, false positive or clinically irrelevant results can lead to ineffective and expensive treatments, and delay more effective therapy. Sometimes harmful therapy may result, such as unnecessary dietary avoidance and risk of malnutrition, particularly in children.

In the world of food allergies, pine nuts are classified as a tree nut , and all tree nuts are common allergens.2 However, allergies to pine nuts are relatively rare: less than 5% of people with tree nut allergies in the United States are allergic to pine nuts.3 However, if your child is allergic to pine nuts, the reaction tends to be severe.4

Interestingly, some pine nut varieties can cause pine nut mouth which temporarily alters the way things taste. Pine nut mouth typically occurs 12 to 24 hours after consumption and can last a couple of days.5 The quirky condition is most commonly associated with the Pinus armandii or Chinese white pine variety, which is native to China.6

What Are The Symptoms Of A Nut Allergy

Both peanuts and tree nuts can cause allergic reactions. Allergic reactions to nuts can vary from mild to very severe, and are sometimes life-threatening. Symptoms often start very quickly, within an hour of having come into contact with a nut, and sometimes within minutes. Reactions that take place more than four hours after coming into contact with nuts are unlikely to be an allergy.

Signs and symptoms of a mildallergic reaction can include:

  • Your mouth and lips tingling.
  • Your face swelling.
  • Colicky pains in your tummy .
  • A feeling of tightness around your throat.

Signs and symptoms of a more severeallergic reaction can include:

  • All of the above.
  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing due to an asthma-like attack, or swelling around your throat.
  • A sense of impending doom.
  • Dilation of your blood vessels, which can cause:
  • General redness of your skin.
  • A fast heart rate.
  • Low blood pressure, which can cause you to feel faint or to collapse.

This severe reaction is called anaphylaxis and without quick treatment you would soon become unconscious. A small number of people die every year as a result of this kind of severe reaction, usually because they do not obtain treatment quickly enough. If you think you are having an anaphylactic reaction you need to call an ambulance straightaway and obtain immediate medical help.

If you are able to eat seeds, sunflower seeds are a great alternative as they provide a bit of crunch like pine nuts. You may also like pumpkin or other squash/gourd seeds as well to provide a different texture.

If nuts and seeds are a no-go for you, I highly recommend both chickpeas or white cannellini beans. I personally prefer chickpeas because they mix well and make for a thicker pesto that sticks well to pastas.

What Is A Nut Allergy

I’m Allergic to Pine Nuts

If you are allergic to nuts, eating or even just being exposed to a small amount can trigger an allergic reaction. Nuts are one of the most common triggers for anaphylaxis a severe reaction that can be life threatening.

A nut allergy develops when the bodys immune system becomes over-sensitive to a protein in a nut. Being exposed to the nut causes an allergic reaction.

Nut allergies are becoming more common in Australia and can be very serious. About 1 in 5 children with a nut allergy will need emergency medical attention at some point. Very sensitive people can have a reaction if they are exposed to tiny traces of nuts: for example, through eating, breathing or simply touching a nut.

About 2 in 100 people have a nut allergy. Nut allergy is most common in infants and young children, but sometimes appears for the first time in adults. About 3 in 100 infants have a peanut allergy. About 1 in 5 of these will grow out of it, but the rest are likely to have peanut allergy into adulthood. About 1 in 3 people with nut allergy are allergic to both peanuts and tree nuts, such as almonds, macadamia nuts and cashews.

People can be allergic to different types of nuts. The most common ones are peanuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pistachios and walnuts.

Preventing A Nut Allergy Reaction

  • Ask your server. Foods that dont have peanuts or tree nuts in them can still get contaminated if theyâre made in the same place or with the same equipment as food that has the nuts. It can also happen in restaurants that use lots of ingredients, and even in ice cream parlors if equipment, like scoops, are shared.
  • Check the label each time you buy a product. Food makers sometimes change the recipe.
  • Look outside the kitchen. Nuts can also be in lotions, shampoos, and pet food. Check labels before you buy or use them.

What Else Should I Know

To help reduce contact with nut allergens and the possibility of reactions in someone with a peanut or tree nut allergy:

  • If you keep peanuts and nuts in your home, watch for cross-contamination that can happen with utensils and cookware. For example, make sure the knife you use to make peanut butter sandwiches is not used in preparing food for a child with a nut allergy, and that nut breads are not toasted in the same toaster as other breads.
  • Don’t serve cooked foods you didn’t make yourself, or anything with an unknown list of ingredients.
  • Tell everyone who handles the food your child eats, from waiters and waitresses to the cafeteria staff at school, about the allergy. If the manager or owner of a restaurant is uncomfortable about your request for peanut- or nut-free food preparation, don’t eat there.
  • Consider making your child’s school lunches, as well as snacks and treats to take to parties, play dates, sleepovers, school events, and other outings.
  • Work with the childcare supervisor or school principal to make sure the food allergy emergency action plan provided by your allergist is followed correctly.
  • Keep epinephrine accessible at all times not in the glove compartment of your car, but with you. Seconds count during an anaphylaxis episode.

A little preparation and prevention can help make sure that your child’s allergy doesn’t get in the way of a happy, healthy everyday life.

Foods That Contain Tree Nuts

Food that always or almost always contains tree nuts include:

  • Nutella
  • Nut meal
  • Natural extracts: almond and wintergreen

There are some places where it may be difficult to avoid tree nuts. These include parties or gatherings where bowls of mixed nuts may be served.

As with many common allergens, tree nuts are sometimes found in unlikely foods, so be sure to read labels on all packaged foods before buying or eating them.

What Are Peanut And Tree Nut Allergies

Making peanuts safe for allergy sufferers

Peanuts are among the most common allergy-causing foods, and they often find their way into things you wouldn’t expect. Take chili, for example: It may be thickened with ground peanuts.

Peanuts aren’t actually a true nut they’re a legume . But the proteins in peanuts are similar in structure to those in tree nuts. For this reason, people who are allergic to peanuts can also be allergic to tree nuts, such as almonds, Brazil nuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pistachios, pecans, and cashews.

Sometimes people outgrow some food allergies over time , but peanut and tree nut allergies are lifelong in many people.
