Are Dizziness And Lightheadedness Ever Normal

When we were kids, there was nothing more fun than to be spun around in circles until we dropped from dizziness. If youre experiencing frequent and ongoing problems with dizziness and lightheadedness, however, the problem may be far from fun and games.

At our practice, Dr. Alexa Lessow and our team of otolaryngology specialists understand the many serious conditions that can lead to dizziness and lightheadedness. We review them here.

Dizziness And Allergic Reactions

Anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. It most commonly occurs with allergies to foods, medications, latex, and insect bites. These symptoms appear within 20 to 30 minutes of ingestion or exposure.

Dizziness may occur during an allergic reaction. This symptom is usually caused by a drop in blood pressure. It is usually not the main symptom. Classic signs of an allergic reaction include:

  • AngioedemaSubcutaneous swelling

In severe cases, cardiac arrest or death may occur.

Get moisture. Use a nasal saline spray several times a day, or hold a warm, moist washcloth to your face. This can ease the pressure and pain.

Humidifiers will also help keep your sinuses from drying out. Or you can sit in the bathroom with a hot shower running for 15 minutes to curb pain.

Check the medicine cabinet. Try an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen, to ease an earache or pain from sinus pressure.

Try a . Over-the-counter tablets or nasal sprays can ease sinus blockage which in turn can relieve clogged ears. But don’t use nasal decongestant sprays for more than 3 days, or you will rebound⦠meaning the more you use it the more you need it because youâre congested.

Avoid extreme temperatures. They can make sinus-related ear problems worse. If your ears bother you, it isnât the time to go jogging on a hot day or build a snow fort with the kids.

Keep your head up. If you bend forward with your head down, it can make the pressure worse. Youâll want to skip yoga class until the sinus problem is over.

Blow your nose gently. Block one nostril while you blow through the other.

Drink plenty of fluids. Down lots of water in the evening. When you stay hydrated, it keeps nasal mucus thin. That helps it drain and means less nighttime stuffiness.

Are Dizziness And Sinus Issues Related

Dizziness is a vague term. It can mean an off-balance feeling, a spinning feeling, or just feeling like your head is in a cloud. Although dizziness can come from neurologic issues, frequently the cause is an ear issue.

Ear issues such as middle ear pressure, eustachian tube dysfunction, and inner ear inflammation are usually caused by nasal and sinus issues.

When a patient has chronic allergies, chronic or recurring sinus infections, nasal polyps, or anatomical issues such as a deviated septum they are much more likely to have ear issues.

Reduce Quick Head Movements

Especially when dizziness is a primary symptom, do not stand up quickly or spin around. Notice how you may feel sicker when cleaning or cooking, activities which have a surprising amount of quick stooping and getting up.

If you do have to be very active, take breaks. Applying a cool compress to the back of the head often helps nausea and feelings of dizziness.

Does A Sinus Infection Cause Shortness Of Breath

A sinus infection can cause shortness of breath because it can limit the respiratory system.

Symptoms for sinus infection are typically:

  • Headache
  • Manifest as congestion in lungs from pocketing of fluids
  • Increased mucous production which may also irritate lungs

The problem with breathing through the mouth is that this makes your nasal passages less congested, which means you have more space to breathe through your nose .

Sinus infections can commonly produce symptoms such as nasal congestion, sore throat, fever, and headache but do not typically lead to shortness of breath.

If you are experiencing shortness of breath, please see a doctor.

Many people assume that sinus infections cause these symptoms but this is not typically the case. Sinusitis can lead to other problems such as headaches and fever, so if you experience any of those symptoms as well then it would be appropriate for your physician to run tests to rule out an infection in order to get treatment started quickly.

Sinusitis often causes a sore throat, which in turn can make it difficult for people to swallow saliva, and as a result, they are more likely to drool at night when theyre trying to fall asleep.

Drooling can cause a persons neck or chest muscles to tire, resulting in difficulty breathing while they sleep. Sinuses will also be clogged if there is too much mucus buildup within them due to the inflammation caused by the infection.

The State Of West Coast Air In Fall 2021

Fall for West Coasters looks a little different. While the air may cool slightly, making way for activities like hiking, autumn and its weather concerns can leave you on the edge of your seat.

No matter how far you are from the source of a wildfire, the threat of smoke-filled skies, property damage, and health concerns can stir up feelings of worry throughout your community. Wildfire burns create excessive amounts of smoke, polluting the air outdoors for miles. And since wildfires travel quickly, smoke can enter your home at a moments notice, impacting the health of you and your family and potentially creating long-term respiratory issues. Even if you are able to evacuate, there will still be lingering smoke in your indoor air after its been deemed safe to return.

Wildfire Season: What to Expect in 2021

You guessed itthis wildfire season is also predicted to be above-average, and we have the climate crisis to thank for that. With most of the nation currently experiencing droughts and higher temperatures, experts predict wildfire season could last longer than normal.

Can Sinus Issues Cause Vertigo

The simple answer is yes. The physiological trigger comes from inflammation affecting your middle ear. The infection and inflammation can start in the sinus and spread to the middle ear via the eustachian tube.

The key point here is that your sinus problem would have to be fairly significant and you may feel that it is affecting your hearing or your ear in some way. The timing of your vertigo would need to be synced with the onset of your sinus symptoms. The relief of vertigo will also occur in tandem with the relief of your sinus symptoms.

The clinical connection between dizziness and sinus problems is less clear.

Can Allergies Cause Vertigo

Vertigo Peripheral Etiology Mucus Sinus Without Headache ...

Seasonal allergies that affect the sinuses, otherwise known as allergic rhinitis, affect nearly eight percent of the adult population in the United States. Because these allergies are so common, sometimes people dont realize that they can also be quite serious. Depending on how difficult a patients allergies are and how effective available treatment is, symptoms can range from mild discomfort to a debilitating struggle.

Vertigo is an uncommon but severe allergy symptom. It is most common in sufferers of allergic rhinitis. Since seasonal allergens enter the body through the nose and mouth, the body reacts by trying to flush them out with mucus. Unfortunately, our bodies often overproduce mucus, which is why individuals with allergic rhinitis sometimes suffer from sore throats due to post-nasal drip.

Some allergy sufferers have such a significant build-up of fluid in their sinuses that it can affect their vestibular system. The vestibular system, and the eustachian tubes in particular, are responsible for our sense of balance. If the eustachian tubes in the inner ear become blocked by fluid, patients can experience a variety of worrying symptoms, including dizziness and lightheadedness. If the blockage is particularly stubborn, they can also suffer from vertigo.

Some of you may remember this I like to do it every year around this time of the year because as fall rolls around, we definitely do have more and more allergies that happen, but why? Why do you think it would even affect your balance?

Affects of Allergies

When you get allergies, youre sensitive to something, whether it may be food or, at this time of the year, leaves and grass. In the springtime, you have the pollen as well, but what happens? Youre starting to get congested, your sinuses fill up, but why do you think thats going to directly affect your balance?

Lets go back to our sinus cavity, our nasal passages and where the sinuses are. We have these cavities around our nasal passages, through our face and behind the eyes, and doesnt that make sense because when our sinuses kick in, a lot of us feel that pressure, which we call sinus pressure and that happens to always happen right behind the eyes or right around the temples, and you also can get headaches. When those fill up, we feel those symptoms, were sneezing and have those pressure headaches.

A Lot Of People Are Buying Homes These Days What Can New Homeowners Or Those Who Are Looking To Buy New Homes Expect From A Standard Hvac System Compared To One Upgraded With Aprilaire Fresh Air Ventilation And Air Filtration Products

Whether its a new home or even an older home, your most standard HVAC systems have that one-inch, horsehair-style filter that doesnt really filter air properly. We will explain to customers that all a one-inch filter is really doing is protecting the equipment from big particles circulating throughout the house and throughout your duct system. Now theres also the 3M filters: one-inch filters that are like sticking a sheet of glass in there, so those are what I would consider within the standard HVAC system. Another part of having the standard system is that the fan only runs when the system is in heating or cooling mode. Any homeowners that have allergies or asthma know that they typically are the worst in the spring or in the fall when your system is running the least.
