Questions About Sunbutter Packaging Storage And Shelf Life

  • Does SunButter have to be refrigerated?
  • SunButter does not need to be refrigeratedit is entirely personal preference whether SunButter is stored in the refrigerator or cupboard. Refrigerated SunButter stays fresh longer, but you can safely store it in a cool place.

  • What is the shelf life?
  • One year from the date of manufacture.

  • Why isnt SunButter sold in glass jars?
  • Our jars are BPA free. Manufacturing with glass poses many safety challenges and additional costs. We also believe in reducing the consumption of diesel fuel required to ship much heavier glass jars. The energy required to produce and recycle glass jars is also much greater than our number 1 recyclable PETE jars. We pride ourselves on making SunButter as sustainable as possible.

  • Why is there oil on the top of my SunButter?
  • Most SunButter varieties have natural oil separation that occurs typically 3 or more months from the date of production. The naturally occurring oil that separates is expressed from the sunflower kernel during our milling process. Over time, it rises to the top of the jar. We suggest stirring the product before use and flipping the jar between uses. Make sure the lid is tight each time!

  • Why is there oil seeping from the foil seal of my jar?
  • Is Sunflower Oil A Nut Allergy

Its a common question and leaves many people with nut allergies wondering if they can enjoy sunflower, poppy, pumpkin, and sesame seeds. The simple answer is that you may be able to eat these seeds because none of them are tree nuts. Each comes from plant families that are not closely related to nut-producing trees.

New Study Examines Allergic Reactions To Sunflower Seeds

Homemade Chocolate Sunflower Seed Butter aka Nut

A new study being presented at the 2021 AAAAI Virtual Annual Meeting, taking place February 26-March 1, examines the clinical and immunologic features of patients who have sensitivity to sunflower seeds.

    MILWAUKEE FEBRUARY 08, 2021

A new case series looking at patients who have positive sunflower seed-specific IgE will be introduced during the 2021 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Virtual Annual Meeting.

While the abstract of this research was included in an online supplement to The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology that was published February 1, the full poster will be presented at the 2021 AAAAI Virtual Annual Meeting.

The retrospective case series examined 117 adult patients sensitive to sunflower seeds. These patients underwent skin tests and detection of specific IgE. At times, oral food challenges were also recommended and performed.

A total of 28 patients were recognized to have a clinical allergy to sunflower seed, amounting to 24% of those included in the study. Most of those also had a history of atopic disease and reactions to nuts and Rosaceae fruit. Fourteen patients suffered anaphylaxis, with all of those reactions graded as moderate save one. Of those suffering from anaphylaxis, 71% needed to go to the emergency department.

    Is Sunflower Oil Inflammatory

However, sunflower oil contains a lot of omega-6 fatty acids. The body needs them, but omega-6s are thought to be pro-inflammatory, while omega-3s are anti-inflammatory. Consuming too many omega-6s without balancing with omega 3s, could lead to an excess inflammation in the body, so moderation is key.

Can You Eat Seeds If You’re Allergic To Tree Nuts

    Verywell / Zorica Lakonic

Can you eat seeds when you’re following a tree nut-free diet? It’s a common question and leaves many people with nut allergies wondering if they can enjoy sunflower, poppy, pumpkin, and sesame seeds.

The simple answer is that you may be able to eat these seeds because none of them are tree nuts. Each comes from plant families that are not closely related to nut-producing trees. Therefore, they don’t necessarily contain the same allergenic proteins that tree nuts have.

In fact, some of these seeds are commonly used in cooking as substitutes for tree nuts and peanuts for people following a nut-free diet. They actually provide significant nutritional value and are somewhat similar in taste.

With that said, true seed allergies are on the rise and they can cause serious reactions, including anaphylaxis. Even though these seeds are not related to tree nuts, it’s still possible for you to be allergic to the seeds themselves.

Your allergist is the best source for advice on whether seeds are an appropriate part of your diet, especially if you have other food allergies.

Allergy To Sunflower Seeds & Nuts

    Fact Checked

Some food allergies are very difficult and frustrating to work around, like eggs or dairy products. Others, such as nuts and sunflower seeds, are less challenging. Still, nuts and seeds are found in a surprising number of common foods and other products, and anyone with an allergy should be diligent in learning about them.

If you are experiencing serious medical symptoms, seek emergency treatment immediately.

Highly Purified Peanut Oil Contains Little Allergen

Refined peanut oils , have been shown to be safe in small studies. It is difficult to guarantee that an oil is sufficiently refined to remove all traces of peanut protein, which is the trigger for allergic reactions. Some restaurants use peanut oil for cooking, and peanut proteins may leach into the oil. Therefore, avoidance of peanut oil is advised. Little research has been done to prove safety of other nut oils, so avoidance is advised.

    Ascia Action Plans Are Essential

On average the nut allergic person will have an accidental exposure every few years. The difficulties of avoiding peanuts, tree nuts or seeds completely make it essential to have an ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis when an adrenaline autoinjector has been prescribed.

Nut allergy can be effectively managed

Under the supervision of a clinical immunology/allergy specialist and with a network of supportive contacts, people with allergy to peanuts, tree nuts or seeds can learn to manage their allergies. The knowledge that adrenaline autoinjectors are available offers reassurance, but is not a substitute for strategies to minimise the risk of exposure to allergen triggers.

ASCIA is the peak professional body of clinical immunology/allergy specialists in Australia and New Zealand.

ASCIA resources are based on published literature and expert review, however, they are not intended to replace medical advice. The content of ASCIA resources is not influenced by any commercial organisations.

How To Read A Label For Tree Nuts

Gina Yu Honey Sunflower Seed Butter

Always read the entire ingredient label to look for the names of the tree nut you need to avoid. Tree nut ingredients may be within the list of the ingredients. Or tree nuts could be listed in a contains statement beneath the list of ingredients. Examples are “contains walnut” or “contains almond.” This is required by the federal Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act . Learn more about the U.S. food allergen labeling law.

FALCPA requires that all packaged foods regulated by the FDA must list the common names of tree nuts clearly on the ingredient label if it contains tree nuts. Advisory statements such as may contain hazelnuts or made in a facility with tree nuts are voluntary. Advisory statements are not required by any federal labeling law. Discuss with your doctor if you may eat products with these labels or if you should avoid them.

Did you know that marzipan, mortadella, and mandelonas all contain tree nuts? The FDA food allergen label law requires foods to state if they contain a major allergen such as tree nuts. But, there are many foods and products that are not covered by the law, so it is still important to know how to read a label for tree nut ingredients. Products exempt from plain English labeling rules: Foods that are not regulated by the FDA. Cosmetics and personal care items. Prescription and over-the-counter medications. Toys, crafts, and pet food.

    Allergenic Properties Of Seeds

Sunflower and other seeds are small embryonic plants encased in seed coats. Common seeds include sesame, poppy, sunflower, mustard, flaxseed and canola . The 2S albumin storage proteins are major allergens found in the seeds of a wide range of mono and di-cotyledonous plants. They function as storage proteins, providing nutrients during germination and to the growing plant. 2S albumins, named as such for their sedimentation coefficient, are found in peanuts, certain tree nuts, and many seeds including that of sunflower .

While they demonstrate a high level of polymorphism, typical characteristics of 2S albumin storage proteins include compact structure, disulfide bonds which confer stability under conditions of heating or pH extremes, and glycosylation, conferring additional stability. These qualities allow for resistance to harsh conditions such as acidic pH and proteolytic digestive enzymes, allowing these allergens to reach the gastrointestinal immune system with intact allergenic epitopes that can elicit IgE responses .

What Is The Difference Between Sunflower Oil And High Oleic Sunflower Oil

The difference between each type of sunflower oil is a result of the balance between the polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats in the oil, which are linoleic acid and oleic acid, respectively. High oleic oils are considered the most healthy, and have the most monosaturated fat that makes up the oil.

What To Avoid With A Tree Nut Allergy

Published: Jan 18, 2021 by Rebecca Pytell · This post may contain affiliate links.

Tree nut allergies are one of the most common and talked about among the Top 8. It is the second most common among infants and children and once acquired is usually a lifelong food allergy, with only 9% of the population ever outgrowing it. This makes it common among adults as well. Tree nut allergies can cause severe reactions and even death. Epi-Pens are usually a must with nut allergies and in some cases even the touch or breath of someone else who has just consumed the allergen could cause a reaction.

Tree nuts should not be confused with peanuts or seeds. Peanuts are legumes , but in some cases, a peanut allergy may accompany a tree nut allergy and vise versa. There are many types of tree nuts and you may be allergic to one, two, a select few, or all of them. Coconut is also listed by the FDA as a tree nut, however, it is extremely for someone allergic to tree nuts to be allergic to coconut as it is actually a fruit seed. But coconut can still cause allergic reactions.
