When Should I Wear A Mask

Children’s Allergies and Symptoms

The CDC and President Donald Trump are recommending cloth face masks be worn by anyone going out in public to mitigate the virus spread from those who are asymptomatic. The institution makes it clear that these are cloth face masks, not the N95 masks that are in such short supply now.

Some health experts have recommended that only health care workers and people who are sick should be wearing masks to mitigate spread of the disease, and that most face masks do very little in protecting a healthy person from infection.

The particles that carry coronavirus are too small to be stopped by surgical or dust masks, so all they provide is a false sense of security, Labus said. You need a special type of mask, called an N95, to provide any protection. They need to be fitted to your face, worn properly, and removed in a way that keeps you from infecting yourself. These masks are in short supply right now, even in hospitals. Stocking up on these masks makes it harder for medical providers treating patients with coronavirus to protect themselves.

Many across the globe are wearing homemade masks. You can too.

Labus said the initial hesitation behind making this recommendation was due to the short supply of N95 masks, and the worry that people would relax on social distancing with masks potentially giving them a false sense of protection from infection.

Symptoms Of The Cold Flu Allergies And Covid Can Be Similar Here’s How To Spot The Difference

Weve all been there. You wake up with a sore throat, then come the aches and the congestion that feels like it may cause your head to explode.

Is it a cold or allergies? Or something worse, like the flu or even COVID-19? Should you see your healthcare provider, or just stay home and get rest?

While a cold and the flu have similar symptoms, the flu is much more severe and can result in serious health problems, says Dr. Richard Martin, a family medicine physician at Geisinger Mt. Pleasant in Scranton. “Add allergies and COVID-19, and it can be even more complex to know whether you should call your doctor or get a COVID test.”Lets take a look at how to spot the difference and get you on the road to recovery ASAP.;

Its a heck of a time when cold season overlap. If you happen to be one of the unfortunate souls in this sniffly Venn diagram from hell, youd likely do anything to find relief. Fortunately, you wont have to go much further than your medicine cabinet, but before you do, be sure to read this advice from Erica Patel, MD, of the University of Southern California, about whether its safe to take allergy meds and cold meds simultaneously.

Because symptoms are similar for colds and allergies, you dont necessarily have to double down. Many over-the-counter cough and cold medicines and allergy medicines may have similar ingredients, Dr. Patel noted, including a pain and fever reducer, a decongestant , an antihistamine , and a cough reliever. But that means its also easy to overdo it.

A good way to avoid overdosing on ingredients is to compare labels, she told POPSUGAR. For example, if one medication has acetaminophen as an ingredient, then avoid taking other medications with acetaminophen in them. Common cold and allergy medication ingredients include:

  • Pain relievers: acetaminophen or ibuprofen
  • : phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine, oxymetazoline

This medication may be taken with food if stomach upset occurs. Drink plenty of fluids unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

If you are using chewable tablets, chew each tablet thoroughly before swallowing.

If you are using a product made to dissolve in the mouth , dry your hands before handling the medication. Place each dose on the tongue and allow to dissolve completely, then swallow it with saliva or with water.

Tips For Relieving Congestion When You Have A Heart Condition

So, how are you supposed to relieve congestion if you have a heart condition? Dr. Kaminski recommends the following four tips:

1. Try a saline nasal spray to relieve your congestion.2. Increase the humidity in your home. A cool-mist humidifier or vaporizer may help ease congestion.

3. Talk to your cardiologist. They can tell you which OTC medicines are safe to use with your heart condition and the medications you take.

Treating Symptoms At Home

Until a vaccine is approved, there is no treatment or cure for the coronavirus itself, but there are ways to treat symptoms at home, Labus said.

Over-the-counter medications that contain ingredients like acetaminophen can help treat the pain while cough medicines like Mucinex, Robitussin or DayQuil/NyQuil can help treat other symptoms, he said.

On March 15, French Minister of Health Olivier Véran advised people infected with the coronavirus to not use ibuprofen or aspirin to treat symptoms of the disease and to take acetaminophen instead. Some conclude that ibuprofen aggravates coronavirus symptoms, which Labus said there is no evidence to support, calling it an unfounded rumor.

Theres really no reason to avoid certain over-the-counter medications, Labus said. The World Health Organization does not discourage anyone from taking ibuprofen.

For the time being, the only cure for COVID-19 is time.

You can take something for the cough, you can take something for the fever, but its still going to take time for your body to fight it off, he said.

Once someone starts to feel better, Labus said its best to wait 72 hours after symptoms are gone to leave the house.

Cold And Allergy Treatment: Secrets From A Pharmacist

We asked a pharmacist for her top 10 tips for getting the most from your cold and allergy treatment. Heres what she told us:

  • Choose “night-time” products for overnight use.“Daytime” products may contain ingredients, such as pseudoephedrine, that can keep you awake at night. To help you sleep through the night with a cold or allergies, choose a “night-time” product or ask your pharmacist to recommend a product that wont keep you up at night.
  • Choose “daytime” products when you cant afford to be drowsy. Some ingredients can cause drowsiness. To avoid this, select a “daytime” or “non-drowsy” product to help you power through your day or ask your pharmacist to recommend a product that wont make you drowsy.
  • Start your allergy medication before allergy season. If you have seasonal allergies, dont wait until you have symptoms – start your allergy medication just before your allergy season begins, and keep taking it every day during allergy season. This way, the medication will be in your system throughout the allergy season.
  • Choose a product that targets your specific cold or allergy symptoms. Ask your pharmacist to recommend a product with ingredients to treat only the symptoms you have.
  • Stay away from your allergy triggers. Keep avoiding your allergy triggers, even when youre on allergy medication. These two strategies work together to give you the best symptom relief.
