  • Stearic acid is sometimes vegan, sometimes not. It can be produced from plants like soybean oil, cocoa butter, and shea butteror from animal fat . Research done by the Vegetarian Resource Group shows there are major producers of stearic acid that use plant sources and animal sources.
  • Lastly, sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide are vegan. Sodium carbonate is made from sodium chloride and limestone using the Solvay process. Meanwhile, sodium hydroxide is also made from salt using the chloralkali process.

So, bringing all of this together the one concern with sodium stearoyl lactylate for vegans is that the stearic acid could have been made from animals.

Sodium lauroyl lactylate is a naturally-derived ingredient that is used in cosmetics and skincare products as a surfactant, emulsifier, and moisturizer. It is also used to enhance the delivery of other ingredients into the skin and extend the scent of products.

One other resource says, nearly always, vegetable oil will be used for the production of sodium stearoyl lactylate.

Further, the VRG, which does some of the best research on these matters, has decided to list sodium stearoyl lactylate as Typically vegan.

If you want to look deeper into the sources of the sodium stearoyl lactylate in a specific product, you can always ask the company. However, they may not be able to tell you exactly how all of the ingredients are sourced.
