How To Set Up Use And Maintain Your Air Purifier

To get the most out of an air purifier, you need to set it up properly, operate it properly, and perform very occasional maintenance. Heres a list of what to do:

Remove the wrappers. Most air purifiers arrive with the filters installedbut also sealed in plastic wrappers. And we know of at least one Wirecutter reader and one Wirecutter staffer who didnt realize they needed to remove the plastic before turning their purifier on, which rendered their purifiers useless. So open up your machine and, if the filters are indeed wrapped, unwrap and reinstall them. The HEPA filters should have an arrow or other marking indicating the correct orientation.

Place them correctly. Install your purifier at least 18 inches from a wall and any furniture, ideally near the midpoint of the room youre using it in.

One purifier per room is best. Purifiers work best in a contiguous space if you want to clean the air in both the living room and a bedroom, for example, its best to get a purifier for each room or to move a single purifier around with you. However, thats not always practical, which is why we gave points to lightweight purifiers with handles that made moving them from room to room easy.

Under known bad-air conditions, such as during a nearby wildfire, we recommend running purifiers on high for an hour and thereafter on quiet/medium. In 2018, we specifically tested this advice, and our results bear it out.

Four Different Cleaning Levels Let You Control Air Quality

  • Pros: Auto-off timer, visual indicator to change filter
  • Cons: Visually unappealing, limited to small rooms

This Honeywell HPA100 might not look like muchit has all the visual appeal of a space heaterbut Honeywell, no doubt, is hoping youll care more about what it can do. This model is designed for medium-size rooms and features a true HEPA filter for guaranteed removal of 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns. Honeywell says that its fan can filter the air in the room five times an hour.

Its one of the more configurable air purifiers on this list. The control panel on the top of the unit lets you set up to four different cleaning levels and has an auto-off timer option so it doesnt run continuously. The panel also indicates when its time to change the filter, and it has multiple brightness levels so you can dim it at night or when you dont need to see it.

How To Maintain Your Air Purifier For Allergies

Once you’ve obtained your air purifier for allergies, it’s essential that you diligently maintain your unit in order to yield the best results when it comes to easing those nasty symptoms. Whilst cleaning, especially if you suffer severely from allergies, make sure to wear a face mask and gloves to protect yourself and follow manufacturer advice to avoid damaging your unit.

When removing, replacing or cleaning the filters within your air purifier, be careful in your handling, so as not to displace the fine filter. Some types of HEPA filter are washable, but be sure to check your individual unit before you take action. Remember to pay attention to the exterior of your unit too. Wipe it down to keep the whole air purifier clean.

How Hepa Filters Work

Best air purifiers to improve indoor air quality and ...

HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air. The technology is the result of an industrial need that became critical in the Atomic Age: high volumes of very clean air, vital for the production of microprocessors and other sensitive instruments. Happily, HEPA filtration is also fundamentally simple and cheap, which means its available to everyone today.

HEPA filtration is a physical process, but its not like what most people envision when they think of a filter: a net, or a colander, or maybe mosquito netting, where particles larger than the holes get caught and the rest passes through. Rather, in HEPA purifiers, a fan draws particles suspended in the air through a dense, felt-like filter that has billions of tiny gaps of varying size. Air passes through almost unimpededthus the high-efficiency in HEPAbut the mazelike web of fibers traps almost all the particles, from big stuff like pollen down to ultrafine, 10-nanometer stuff.

Crucially, the hardest particles to capture are what you might call the Baby Bears: At 0.3 micron, theyre at the low limit of interception momentum and above the limit of diffusionin other words, theyre just right to get through a HEPA filter. The solution is to make the filter dense enough that it has a sufficient amount of fibers to capture most of the 0.3-micron particles. And again, according to the US HEPA standard, most of them means 99.97% of them in a single pass.

What Is The Best Air Purifier For Allergies And Dust

What is the best air purifier for allergies and dust?

Living with allergies or asthma because of exposure to dust mites and specific allergens sometimes flare up and can make your daily activities difficult because of unknowingly damaging the health. Do you suffer from allergies? The dust mites that are a form of allergens tend to gather in higher concentrations in the rooms and enclosed areas where people spend most of their time. These tiny pests are small enough to hide in the tiniest nooks and corners of the home. They cannot fly but they tend to stir up into the air by different human activities like vacuuming, sitting on upholstered furniture, making the bed and sleeping.

The dust mites are found mostly on carpets, mattresses, curtains and upholstered furniture. They then mainly feed on the human dead skin cells. These dead skin cells are a majorly the household dust, which is why dust mites are so attracted to it.

The best way to minimize your household exposure to dust mites is with the use of an air purifier.

Air purifiers act like ventilation systems that operate to get rid of the polluted air. These contaminants are captured or adsorbed by the air filters in an air purifier in particle form. When these harmful contaminants and particles are captured, the air purifier starts the process of cleaning the air by not giving back the pollutants back into the air.

Which Is The Right One For You

When shopping for an air purifier, you’ll need to decide what area you’ll want to use it in. There isn’t a plug-in air purifier that can clean the air inside an entire household it’s best to isolate areas, such as a bedroom, kitchen, or living room. Once you know the size of the room you’re working with, you can select an air purifier capable of efficiently circulating and cleaning the room’s air. A tabletop model is best for small spaces like a nursery or bathroom. A floor model can handle larger areas and is still portable enough to be moved from one room to another.

Another important consideration is filter replacement. Some models require regular replacements of expensive filters, which could end up costing you hundreds of dollars per year. Before you purchase a model, look into what type of replacement filters you’ll need, how much they cost, and if you can afford to replace them as required. Otherwise, choosing not to replace filters as recommended could reduce the air purifier’s efficiency.

Lastly, sound can be an important factor. If you plan on running an air purifier in a bedroom, one with variable fan speeds and a low-decibel sleep mode can make it more comfortable to operate at all hours.

Best Air Purifier for Allergies (2021 Reviews & Buying Guide) Top Allergy Air Purifiers
  • Produces white noise on the higher fan speeds.
  • For best performance filters require filter replacement over time.

While we find the HEPA purifiers work best for allergies they are not without drawbacks.

Sound is a concern if you need the air purifier to be silent. Be sure to look for the noise level dBA if this is a concern for you.

We find many of the air purifiers to be quiet or silent on the lower fan speeds. The only issue with this is you get lower air flow.

The other consideration is replacement filters. Like an furnace filter a HEPA filter will need to be replaced. From the specifications we see that most HEPA filters last 6-12 months depending on brand. Some higher units have filters that last longer.

Upgrade Pick: Blueair Blue Pure 211+

If you need to purify the air in a seriously large space, we recommend the Blueair Blue Pure 211+. Its extremely powerful, delivering our recommended 4 ACH in spaces as large as 650 square feet . That means it can clean the combined living areas of many open-floor-plan homes. Its also an attractive, quiet-running machine, so its easy to live with. Its five-year cost of ownershipabout $1,150 including the up-front cost and the annual cost of electricity and replacement filtersis comparable to that of most large-space purifiers. All that said, unless you really need to clean an especially large space, the even quieter, smaller, and much more affordable Coway AP-1512HH Mighty is a better choice.

In January 2021, the similar Blue Pure 211+ Auto was released. Its slightly more powerful yet also more energy efficient due to a new motor and filter, and it adds an auto setting that adjusts the fan speed to changing air-quality conditions. We have not been able to test it, but we are confident that it will deliver similar, excellent performance.

The Blue Pure 211+ is not true-HEPA. However, it has excellent clean air delivery rate certifications from the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, which in some ways is a more rigorous measurement. And it has always delivered exceptional performance in our testing at the 0.3-micron HEPA standard, on both new and old filters.

Choose A Fast Efficient Air Purifier

Speed and efficiency are important, particularly if you suffer from cat allergies. An efficient air purifier can clean an entire room at least six times every hour.

Most air purifiers are rated for specific room sizes and some sellers state the products CADR . This value gives you an idea of how well the purifier will clean the rooms in your house. The CADR is the number of cubic feet the air purifier cleans every minute. This number varies based on which speed setting you use and which pollutants are present.

Units certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers will release specific CADR numbers for dust, tobacco smoke, and pollen. Unfortunately for us, the testing process doesnt involve cat hair or dander, but the standard AHAM testing is enough to help us evaluate the purifiers efficiency and how it compares to others.

An air purifier will clear the air of common allergens in your home, which will reduce potential triggers so that you can breathe easy. Literally. A humidifier, on the other hand, can help to reduce or eliminate allergy symptoms including congestion, sore throat, watery eyes, sinus pain, and inflammation.

What The Research Says

The Environmental Protection Agency refers to several studies that link the use of air purifiers to allergies and asthma symptom relief. The EPA cautions that these studies dont always point to significant improvements or a reduction in all allergy symptoms.

  • A 2018 study found that using a HEPA air purifier in the bedroom improved peoples allergic rhinitis symptoms by reducing the concentration of particulate matter and house dust mites in the air.

If You Want Maximum Energy Efficiency For A Small Space: Blueair Blue Pure 411 Series

The Blueair Blue Pure 411 series encompasses three similar models: the original Blue Pure 411 , the Blue Pure 411 Auto, and the Blue Pure 411+. Although Blueair says the latter two models are slightly more powerful, they share the same clean air delivery rate of 120, making them appropriate for spaces up to about 180 square feet. The differences between the machines are minimal: The 411 Auto has a particle sensor and thus can run in an automatic mode, adjusting the fan speed to meet changing air-quality demands. The other two are manual operation only.

In our testing, the machines did not match the rapid air cleaning of our current small-space pick, the Levoit Core 300. But they did well compared with other small-space machines weve looked at, averaging about 85% removal of smoke particles in 30 minutes on high and about 65% in 30 minutes on medium in a room of 200 square feet. Over a longer timeframeand especially if kept running on medium 24/7, as we recommend for all our purifier picksthey will create and maintain very clean air in a typical home office or bedroom.

The Rest Of The Field

The above recommended air purifiers are only five of the 15 devices I tested. Other HEPA cleaners, like the $100 Levoit Core 300, the $160 Winix 5500-2, the $176 Winix AM90, the $89 Bissell and the $100 GermGuardian all offer only so-so power for their prices. All five of those models offer a carbon filter or charcoal filters for removing airborne contaminants like odors, pet dander and gaseous pollutants, but the filters in all of them contain only a few ounces of the medium, meaning they won’t last long with regular use. Filter replacement timing will vary.

The IQAir HealthPro Plus wasn’t among the devices I tested, in part because I was looking at more affordable options. But IQAir’s $900 air cleaner is one of the few devices on the market to contain multiple kilograms of activated carbon, which will filter out odors and gaseous pollutants much more effectively than most consumer air cleaners under $1,000, according to specialists I talked to.

The Holmes air purifier is a cheap option for your desktop.

Two devices I tested featured an ionic filter: the $250 Coway AP-1512HH I mentioned above and the $200 Sharp FPK50UW. The Sharp’s CADR rating is only 259 square feet, which is significantly lower than the Coway’s and not great for the price.

What About The Ikea Frnuftig

6 Best Air Purifiers For Asthma & Allergies

Lets begin by defining what the IKEA Förnuftig is not: a true-HEPA purifier, or a very powerful purifier, period. Its designed to capture PM2.5particles 2.5 microns in diameter and above, in contrast to the 0.3-micron HEPA standard. That means its optimized for larger airborne particles, such as pollen and mold spores, rather than for very fine particulates like wildfire smoke, as HEPA filters are. An IKEA representative told us that this is a deliberate design consideration, to find the right balance between affordability, small form factor for high home furnishing appeal and low energy consumption, while retaining a comparably high air flow and CADR. Fair enough, but with a clean air delivery rate of just 82.4 cubic feet per minute, the Förnuftig is appropriate only for very small rooms, no more than 125 square feet . In short, its cheap, sleekand weak. We dont recommend it.

Upon its launch, the Förnuftig was not available in California, and we noted this shortcoming. It has since received California Air Resources Board certification , and can be sold in and shipped to California.

Finally, although the Förnuftig has a token VOC filter, you have to purchase that piece separately most air-purifier makers include VOC filters upon purchase and as part of their replacement-filter sets.

These findings make the Förnuftig an automatic dismissal under our criteria. We highlight it here only because its of interest to many readers.
