Fall Allergy Season Amidst The Covid Surge

Pollen season at peak, symptom you may not know about

Fall allergy season is upon us – as COVID is surging in our communities. Cold and flu season wont be far behind and overlapping symptoms may cause confusion and concern for some.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis symptoms can include sneezing, running nose, nasal congestion, headaches, itchy/irritated eyes, and scratchy throat. Fall pollens and molds can also aggravate asthma symptoms like coughing and wheezing. If youre experiencing these symptoms, some which overlap with COVID-19 symptoms, please consult your healthcare provider.

Some early reports suggest the COVID-19 Delta variant might be acting differently in terms of symptoms, especially in the younger generation. Also, in breakthrough cases for those vaccinated, milder symptoms can make it even more difficult to differentiate between allergies, a cold, or COVID.

Atlanta Allergy & Asthmas allergists are stressing the importance of getting and keeping allergies and asthma under control as we enter this upcoming season. Respiratory viruses are the most common trigger for asthma exacerbations. Well-controlled allergies and asthma can help reduce the chance of severe complications due to a respiratory illness. The better your baseline health, the better you are able to fight any infection or stressor that comes your way.

Most Common Pa Allergies

After a long, cold, dead winter, theres nothing more beautiful than the sight of flowers and trees blooming along Interstate 95 to signify the onset of spring. But with these beautiful sights comes an unpleasant side effect: spring allergies. Below we provide an overview of common culprits of seasonal allergy symptoms, what other allergens you have to look forward to later in the year and how to find relief.

When Is Allergy Season That Depends On Your Allergy

You often hear the phrase allergy season, but when is allergy season, exactly? Thats a bit of a trick question. There are allergy seasons that run throughout the year, and whether youre affected at a given time depends on what allergens your body reacts to and when those are in the air.

Peak Hayfever Season Around The Corner

Victoria is approaching the peak of the grass pollen season when hay fever and asthma cases are at their worst.

The co-ordinator of Melbourne Pollen Count, Professor Ed Newbigin, says towns in northern Victoria including Shepparton and Bendigo are having a heavy pollen season, along with the ACT and parts of NSW.

Melbourne’s mass thunderstorm asthma event happened in late November 2016, with 10 fatalities and about 1400 people treated in hospital.

Those affected included people with and without a history of asthma, those with undiagnosed asthma and others with seasonal hay fever.

But cold weather and southerly winds have meant a different story for the city this year, Prof Newbigin says.

“The past couple of weeks have been wet, which has washed the pollen out of the air, and southerly winds coming across Bass Strait have not been bringing pollen into Melbourne,” he told AAP.

La Nina conditions that would usually indicate more grass growing and more pollen in the air have actually delivered the cooler conditions and southerly winds.

“You can thank La Nina for any recent improvement in your hay fever or asthma symptoms,” he said.

Melbourne has had four extreme grass pollen days so far, with a typical season bringing about eight days rated extreme.

Extreme pollen days have a concentration of 100 or more grass pollen grains per cubic metre of air and these are the worst for hay fever and asthma.

12 Tips to Minimize Allergies during Peak Allergy Season ...

Peak allergy season can last from February to November, depending on the type of allergen. Tree pollen is at its peak in early-to-mid spring and is usually at its worst in March. Grass pollen peaks in late May and into early summer. Weed pollen and ragweed pollen tends to peak in July or August and last throughout the end of the summer. Knowing which allergens one is most sensitive to can be helpful in preparing for the worst of it.

Flights May Be Less Comfortable With Recommendations

He argues that airlines should continue disinfecting high-touch areas such as armrests and tray tables, stop in-flight food service, mandate mask-wearing, and ask patrons to keep their above ventilation fan on throughout the flight. While these adjustments make flying less enjoyable, they can help reduce in-flight virus transmission. Masks are currently required on public transportation.

Allen is not the only one saying it is safe to resume flying.

Pollen Season Reaches its Peak

Well, its technically *always* allergy season due to year-round offenders such as dust mites, mold, and pet dander, says Purvi Parikh, MD, an allergist and immunologist with Allergy & Asthma Network. But some allergenspollens, specificallyare seasonal.

Tree pollen, for example, pops up in the spring , grass pollen arrives in the late spring , weed pollen is most prevalent in the summer , and ragweed pollen takes over from summer to fall , says Dr. Parikh.

And, as mentioned, climate change means allergy season begins earlier and lasts longer, adds Corinne Keet, MD, PhD, a professor and allergist at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Specifically, the season has been arriving 20 days earlier than it did in 1990, and contains at least 20 percent more pollen, the New York Times reported.

To get super-specific, Pollen.com has a National Allergy Map that provides an up-to-date allergy forecast in different areas around the country and an Allergy Alert app that gives five-day forecasts with in-depth info on specific allergens, helping you decide if you should stay indoors that day. You should also note that windy, warm, and sunny days can increase levels of pollen turnout, while drizzling or rainy weather is actually associated with no or lower levels of seasonal pollen, explains Clifford W. Bassett, MD, medical director at Allergy and Asthma Care of New York.

I Think I Have An Allergy But Im Not Sure

Generally, if you experience any combination of the typical symptoms watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, etc. you can safely conclude that youre allergic to something.

If you dont know what that something is and you want to find out, your primary care doctor can refer you to an allergist. Allergists conduct skin or blood tests to determine what substances youre allergic to.

The thing is, most people exhibit the same symptoms regardless of the allergen, because allergic rhinitis is a condition with symptoms independent of triggers. So if your allergies arent severe, then youre probably OK to take an over-the-counter allergy pill and not worry about it. If your allergies are severe, though, you might benefit from an allergy test so you can actively avoid your triggers.

Expert Tips For Coping With The Allergy Season

Spring and summer are allergy seasons for pollen-sensitive people. Unfortunately, as a result of climate change, allergy season has been beginning earlier and lasting longer each year. Additionally, there is a 21% increase in pollen released into the air, which can aggravate people with airborne allergies or asthma during the warmer months.

For those with airborne allergies, the good news is that there are strategies for limiting exposure to irritants and treatments available. Individuals with this condition who spend significant time outdoors or engage in outdoor exercise are particularly vulnerable during the spring and summer months. Here are our suggestions for managing symptoms while continuing to do what you enjoy:

If you think you are allergic to ragweed pollen, see a board-certified allergist. They will ask you about your medical history, do a physical exam and allergy testing. They may do a skin prick test to confirm your allergy.

For prick/scratch testing, the doctor or nurse places a small drop containing ragweed pollen on your skin. They will then lightly prick or scratch your skin with a needle through the drop. If you are sensitive to ragweed, you will develop redness, swelling and itching at the test site within 15 minutes. Sometimes your doctor may take a blood test to see if you have the antibody to ragweed.

Pollen Allergy Peak Seasons In The Uk

Seasonal allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hayfever, is caused by exposure to grass pollen, tree pollen and other plant pollen which is released into the air.

In the UK pollen exposure is most common in the spring and summer months, but different species of plant pollinate at different times of year, so some individuals may experience symptoms at specific times and none at others.

Sufferers of allergic rhinitis are advised to limit their exposure to airborne pollen as far as possible during the months in which they are affected. Some strategies which may help include:

  • Reviewing local weather reports including pollen counts and limiting time spent outside when the count is high.
  • Avoiding drying laundry outdoors, particularly clothes and bedding, when pollen counts are high.
  • Keeping doors and windows closed during peak months for pollen exposure.
  • Avoiding gardening, lawn mowing and other outdoor work during peak months for pollen exposure.

The exact timing, peak, and severity of pollen release will vary from year to year according to the specific weather conditions, with wind, temperature and rainfall all having some effect.

First Know Your Allergens

Allergy season peaking in March and April

Seasonal allergies are typically caused by grass, tree or weed pollens. Different plants release pollen at different times of the year, Dr. Rubinstein says. The worst season for someone with allergies depends on which plant pollen causes their allergies.

Grass pollen is a major allergy trigger in Northern California from March through June. Different trees make pollens at different times, which can cause sensitivity year-round. Weed pollens are more common in summer and early fall. Talk to your doctor about allergy testing. Once you know what causes your allergies, you can take steps to protect yourself.

What Is The Difference Between An Allergy And A Cold

Since allergies may cause mild, cold-like symptoms, understanding the differences between seasonal allergies and the common cold can help you identify the most appropriate treatment for your symptoms:

  • Causes: Unlike allergies, the common cold is caused by a virus. Allergy symptoms are the result of the immune systems reaction to allergens such as pollen, dust, pet dander, etc.
  • Symptoms: Fever, aches, and pain are common symptoms of colds that arent usually related to allergies.
  • Symptom duration: A cold usually lasts no more than 10 days, while allergies may last for months.
  • Asthma: Asthma and allergies are frequently co-occurring illnesses, and many people with allergies also have asthma.

Texas Allergy Season Calendar

This allergen is particularly acute in Central Texas, where mountain cedar is plentiful. Additionally, since the pollen is small, light, and can travel hundreds of miles, its difficult to avoid.

Symptoms: The pollen from these common trees can lead to itchy, watery eyes or a runny or stuffy nose and sneezing.

Right as the mountain cedar season is wrapping up, Texans get hit with a trio of new allergens: elm, ash, and mulberry.

Symptoms: These three trees produce pollen that can lead to sneezing, wheezing, and asthma-like symptoms.

Springtime adds oak and pecan tree pollen to the mix, as well as pollen from grasses, such as Bermuda, Johnson, and Kentucky bluegrass. Because grasses are so plentiful, this can be a particularly irritating time of year for anyone sensitive to grass.

Symptoms: In addition to the typical runny nose and watery eyes, grass allergies can lead to a sore throat and asthma-like symptoms.

The summer months offer a trade-off: blazing heat for allergy relief. By June and July, the most common sources of allergies have stopped producing pollen, and pollen counts drop.

In August, a new and notorious allergy culprit arrives on the scene: ragweed. Ragweed is a soft-stemmed, flowering weed that is populous in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. It is particularly plentiful in the southwestern U.S. Other prevalent allergens this time of year include dust mites and mold spores but those are also present year-round.

Brace For Allergies In Late Summer Through Hard Frost

While early summer months see a decrease in the molds and pollen that most commonly trigger seasonal allergies, theres a sharp incline during August. As ragweed, one of the most allergenic weeds, begins to pollinate in August, reactions become common and can be severe. Ragweed can be carried for up to 150 miles, making it hard to avoid. Other weed and grass pollens combined with ragweed make this the most extreme allergy season. During late fall and early winter, as leaves are shed and we see early snows fall and melt away, mold becomes a problem again, as well.

Trends associated with global warming have made ragweed pollen seasons worse in Ukraine, according to a study presented at the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Annual Scientific Meeting.

Ragweed is very much prevalent in our country,Victoria Rodinkova, DrSciBiol, professor in the department of pharmacy at National Pirogov Memorial Medical University in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, said during her presentation. Ukraine is one of the countries most infested by Ambrosia in the world.

The university has been responsible for counting pollen in Ukraine since 2009. Between 2009 and 2011, it used three horizontal transacts with Hirst-type Burkhart impact pollen traps to obtain its pollen count data. Researchers read the collected slides at 12 vertical transacts at an altitude of 25 m at 400 times magnification.

In 2009, the Ambrosia a genus that includes varieties of bursage and ragweed season began at the end of the first 10-day period in August. More recently, the season has been starting in mid-July. The season also has been ending at steadily later dates since 2010.

Our pollen count suggests that this fight is not very successful, Rodinkova said.
