Preventing A Nut Allergy Reaction

Diagnosing nut allergies: Should all tree nuts be avoided?
  • Ask your server. Foods that don’t have peanuts or tree nuts in them can still get contaminated if theyâre made in the same place or with the same equipment as food that has the nuts. It can also happen in restaurants that use lots of ingredients, and even in ice cream parlors if equipment, like scoops, are shared.
  • Check the label each time you buy a product. Food makers sometimes change the recipe.
  • Look outside the kitchen. Nuts can also be in lotions, shampoos, and pet food. Check labels before you buy or use them.

What Is A Tree Nut Allergy

Peanut

Tree nut allergies are among the most common eight allergies in the United States and are often quite severe. Tree nuts include almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, chestnuts, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, and walnuts. Cashews are technically considered a seed, but are commonly grouped into the tree nut category due to the threat of allergic reaction.

If diagnosed with a soybean allergy, it is very possible that people can continue to eat other tree nuts. However, if they do continue to eat other tree nuts the chance of cross-reactivity is very high, and the individual will likely also become allergic to that nut. Typically tree nut allergies develop in childhood, and only 9% of people diagnosed with tree nut allergies outgrow them.

The only effective form of treatment for tree nut allergens is to strictly avoid foods containing such nuts, cooking revolving around tree nuts, as well as avoiding the tree nuts themselves. Such a task is easier with tree nuts than with some other allergens because tree nuts are not as prevalent in the American diet. Foods that nearly always contain tree nuts include pesto, marzipan, Nutella, baklava, pralines, nougat, and nut liqueurs.

Tree Nuts And Peanuts

Theres often confusion between peanuts and tree nuts. Peanuts are legumes, not nuts still, between 25 and 40 percent of individuals who are allergic to peanuts also react to at least one tree nut, according to studies.

Allergists generally advise people who are allergic to tree nuts also to avoid peanuts because of the risk of cross-contact and cross-contamination between tree nuts and peanuts in food processing facilities. If you or your child is allergic to either peanuts or tree nuts, ask your allergist whether you should avoid both products.

The prevalence of these allergies in children appears to be growing, according to a 2010 study that compared data from telephone surveys of 5,300 U.S. households in 1997, 2002 and 2008. In the 2008 survey, 2.1 percent of respondents reported having a child with an allergy to peanuts, tree nuts or both. In the 2002 survey, 1.2 percent of subjects said they had a child with one or both of these allergies five years earlier, in 1997, only 0.6 percent of respondents reported having a child with one or both of these allergies.

Allergies to tree nuts and peanuts are among the most common causes of anaphylaxis in the United States. An allergist will advise patients with these allergies to carry an auto-injector containing epinephrine , which is the only treatment for anaphylactic shock, and will teach the patient how to use it. If a child has the allergy, teachers and caregivers should be made aware of his or her condition as well.

How Are Tree Nut Allergies Diagnosed

Tree nut allergies can be life-threatening. Thats why its so important to have a definitive diagnosis from an allergist. To diagnose your allergies, your allergist may conduct a skin prick test. During this test, your skin will be exposed to a variety of allergens. If youre allergic to one of the allergens, your skin will react and swell or turn red. Your doctor may also recommend blood tests depending on your age and other medical conditions you have.

If the results of your tests are inconclusive, your doctor may request a food challenge. For this test, you will be exposed to the allergen in increasing doses over several hours. Your doctor will supervise this test in case there is an allergic reaction. Emergency medication and services should be at hand during the test.

People can be allergic to one type of tree nut, to some tree nuts, or many tree nuts.

Because of these protein similarities, it is common for an individual to have an allergy to more than one type. For instance, if you are allergic to cashew, you have a higher risk of being allergic to pistachios, as well.

Most people who have a tree nut allergy are not allergic to all tree nuts. The decision to avoid all tree nuts when you have an allergy to one or more is an individual choice that you should discuss with your healthcare provider.

Hi allQuestion for all nut allergy sufferers once diagnosed, did you let your child continue to eat things they always have done which they have had no problem with?I ask because my ds is allergic to brazil nuts, but we havent yet had the test for cashews among other things . Since he was tiny, he has adored pesto pasta and has eaten it at least once a week. Unproven Methods To Test For Allergies

Tree nut allergy: Avoiding all tree nuts ‘may not be necessary’

A number of methods claim to test for allergies but have not been medically or scientifically proven. They can be costly and could lead to dangerous avoidance of certain foods. The Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy , the organisation representing allergists in Australia, recommends that you do not use certain methods to have potential allergies tested. These methods include:

  • cytotoxic food testing
  • reflexology
  • Vega testing.

Always speak with your doctor if you are thinking of using a complementary medicine or therapy to test for allergies.

Living With Peanut Or Tree Nut Allergy

If allergy skin testing shows that your child has a peanut or tree nut allergy, an will provide guidelines on what to do.

The best way to prevent a reaction is to avoid peanuts and tree nuts. Avoiding these nuts means more than just not eating them. It also means not eating any foods that might contain tree nuts or peanuts as ingredients.

The best way to be sure a food is nut-free is to read the food label. Manufacturers of foods sold in the United States must state on their labels whether the foods contain peanuts or tree nuts. Check the ingredients list first.

After checking the ingredients list, look on the label for phrases like these:

  • “may contain tree nuts”
  • “produced on shared equipment with tree nuts or peanuts”

Although these foods might not use nut ingredients, the warnings are there to let people know they might contain traces of nuts. That can happen through “cross-contamination,” when nuts get into a food product because it is made or served in a place that uses nuts in other foods. Manufacturers are not required to list peanuts or tree nuts on the label when there might be accidental cross-contamination, but many do.

Some of the highest-risk foods for people with peanut or tree nut allergy include:

Seeking Safe Source Of Pine Nuts

I probably should have posted this in the Manufacturers forum but now I can’t figure out how to transfer it…I am allergic to peanuts and some tree nuts but not pine nuts. It seems like all of the packaged pine nuts I see contain cross-contamination warnings. They sell them in bulk at Whole Foods and my local middle eastern grocery store, but I always assume that bulk foods may be cross-contaminated. I admit I have eaten them in the past from these sources, but I’m getting more careful in my “old age” . Has anyone found packaged pine nuts WITHOUT “may contain” warnings for any other nuts?

Pine Pollen Allergy Treatment

Pollen allergies can be treated with medication to control the symptoms. Other types of pollen allergies have been treated with immunotherapy, and pine pollen allergies may eventually be treated this way.

While pollen easily travels in the air, some strategies to avoid it can help . Pollen levels are typically highest in the morning , and when the air is dry, so postponing outdoor activities until the afternoon, or going out after heavy rain, can help. Keeping windows closed to keep pollen out will also help, and avoiding drying clothes on hanging lines will keep them from collecting pollen.
