Shellfish allergy symptoms range from mild to severe. One person may experience itching and hives while another could have a life-threatening reaction, such as breathing problems. Symptoms can affect many different parts of the body: skin, respiration, digestion and heart.

Shellfish allergy symptoms include:

  • Tingling or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat.
  • Chest tightness, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing.
  • Stomach issues: pain, nausea, indigestion, vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Dizziness, weak pulse or fainting.
  • Pale or blue skin coloring.
  • Anaphylaxis, a severe, potentially fatal allergic reaction, often involving several parts of the body.

Do Shellfish Allergies Ever Go Away

Listen, anything is possible. Miracles do happen. You know the spiel. Having said that, allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish are generally lifelong. It is possible to outgrow a food allergy, though there are certain foods you are more likely to outgrow such as milk or egg, said Dass. Shellfish allergy is less likely to be outgrown, but this can vary by person.

That being said, a shellfish allergy is actually less common in children, most recently reported at 0.5-percent in kids versus 2.5-percent in adults, per Dass. Still, if your child does happen to be part of that percentage, youll have to be proactive. There isnt currently a cure for food allergies, so you simply have to avoid triggers and learn to recognize and treat reaction symptoms.

On the plus side, clinical trials are happening at this very moment that center on food allergy therapies. None have been approved for general use yet, but theres certainly hope treatment options will be available in the future.

A shellfish allergy is a type of food allergy. If you have a shellfish allergy, you experience unpleasant symptoms after eating shellfish.

Shellfish are animals that live in the water and have a shell-like exterior. There are two types of shellfish:

How Will I Know If My Baby Is Allergic To A Food

Always be sure to offer one potential food allergen at a time. When introducing potential allergens, offer a small amount to baby and watch for any allergic reactions over the next two hours. Allergic reactions are often presented in ways other than anaphylaxis, and you dont necessarily need to keep a medication on hand in case of a reaction. If your child does have a confirmed allergy you will then get a prescription from your pediatrician or allergist.

Ways an allergic reaction might present itself are :

  • Flushed skin or rash
  • Face, tongue or lip swelling
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea

If any of these occur, notify your pediatrician and you will likely be referred to an allergist for follow-up testing. Work with your pediatrician or allergist to develop a treatment plan for your baby. Although up to 2% of children are allergic to eggs, about 70% outgrow the allergy by age 16 .

Anaphylactic reactions are rare in babies and very young children and most frequently occur from cows milk. In the small chance there is wheezing or shortness of breath after eating eggs or any other allergen, your baby should go to the hospital immediately .

There is really only one type of food allergy: true allergy. These are IgE-mediated food allergies in which a severe allergic reaction can occur. Stacey Galowitz, DO, a board-certified allergist with ENT and Allergy Associates in Somerset, New Jersey, says, IgE-mediated food allergies are the reactions to food everyone is familiar with: you eat a peanut and break out in hives, have swelling, experience shortness of breath and vomiting, etcetera. The more severe form of this is called anaphylaxis. She says anaphylactics are those who need to carry epinephrine devices. According to The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, eight types of food account for about 90 percent of all reactions: eggs, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, and soy. What Treatments Are Used If I Have An Allergic Reaction

Epinephrine is the main treatment for anaphylaxis. Once your provider has confirmed a shellfish allergy, you will most likely get a prescription for self-injectable epinephrine . Your provider will teach you how to use it.

If you have a severe allergic reaction and inject yourself with epinephrine, the next step is to call 911. Make sure to tell the dispatcher what happened and that you used your epinephrine injection. Emergency medical technicians may need to give you another dose when they arrive.

Treatment Could Be Improved

Active treatment options that would desensitize shellfish-allergic patients are unfortunately not yet available. Patients are recommended to avoid shellfish that trigger symptoms, educated to read food labels to avoid accidental consumption, take antihistamines to alleviate mild symptoms, and use epinephrine auto-injector a hand-held device that delivers epinephrine to relax the airways by intramuscular injection in case of an anaphylactic reaction. However, none of these first-line measures cures the disease.

Food desensitisation and tolerance induction could be achieved by re-educating the immune system through giving small doses of the offending food and increasing it over time. However, existing interventions have reservations and limitations: the efficacy in developing tolerance is debatable; the adherence of patients is poor as the treatment is lengthy ; there are risks such as developing allergic side effects; and theyre costly, running between US$800 and $1,000 per year.

Our research team therefore focused our effort to address these shortcomings through investigating the value of peptide-based oral immunotherapy, by which these peptides are short fragments of tropomyosin with molecular nature of modifying the immune system, and also by constructing hypoallergens of shrimp tropomyosin and hypoallergen-based vaccines. Hypoallergens are modified from tropomyosin to be less than normally allergenic.

If I Have A Shellfish Allergy How Do I Take Care Of Myself

You can live a healthy, enjoyable, active life with a shellfish allergy. Take some precautions to keep yourself healthy and feeling your best:

  • Know what youre eating and drinking.
  • Check label ingredients even if its a product youve eaten safely before. Often, manufacturers change recipes, and shellfish may have been added.
  • If your child is allergic, teach them not to accept food from friends.
  • Be restaurant safe: Ask detailed questions about ingredients and food preparation when you eat out.
  • Wear your medical alert bracelet or carry an alert card with you.
  • If your healthcare provider prescribed self-injectable epinephrine, carry it with you at all times. Make sure you have two doses available, as you may need to repeat the injection.

Can Children Outgrow Allergies?

Can you grow out of allergies? Its not known exactly why some children will outgrow an allergy and others wont. There have been few studies that look into this. The studies that have been carried out can give some insight into who may or may not grow out of their allergy.

A survey which was conducted between June 2009 and February 2010 looked at 40,104 children in the US.

Of these 40,104 children, 3,188 had a food allergy and 1,245 children had outgrown a food allergy. Nine of the top food allergens were looked at milk, peanut, shellfish, tree nuts, egg, fish, wheat, soy and sesame. The results showed that:

  • 26.6% of children had outgrown a food allergy.
  • The average age of outgrowing the allergy was 5.4 years.
  • The allergens that were most likely to be outgrown were milk , egg , and soy .
  • The allergens that were least likely to be outgrown were shellfish , tree nut and peanut .
  • The younger the child was when they experienced there first reaction, the more likely they were to grow out of the allergy.
  • A child who experienced mild to moderate reactions was more likely to grow out of the allergy than a child who experienced severe reactions like trouble breathing, swelling or anaphylaxis.
  • Black children were less likely to grow out of their allergy than white children.
  • Girls were less likely to grow out of their allergy than boys.

Dealing With Baby Eczema

When you have a baby you hope and expect that they will come out perfect in every way. You pray that everything you eat and do while your baby is in utero affects them in a positive way. I basically thought about this for 10 long months with each of my three pregnancies. I call these my crazy pants. I strap them on tight and dont take them off until Im holding my sweet babies in my arms.

With Kenya and Chloe I never had a day where I worried about them having food allergies as they never showed any signs of sensitives. I offered every food under the sun so they could enjoy a wide variety and they never had any reactions. With Gemma, though, it has been a different story. From the day she was born her skin was irritated and dry from eczema which was inevitably part of her diagnosis.

We went to several allergists, I cut everything from dairy to gluten to sugar out of my diet for 5 long months. We finally discovered one of the causes being an egg allergy, but her eczema still hasnt totally disappeared. Theres nothing more heart breaking than watching your child itch non stop whenever her clothes are off. Aside from changing my diet so my breastmilk is free of the foods we know are triggers, taking long warm baths and lubing her up with tons of moisturizing creams, there was little we could do to alleviate her pain.

Can You Outgrow Seafood Allergy

There have not been many studies to see whether someone can outgrow seafood allergy unlike peanut allergy where 20% is considered the norm. ;Can you outgrow peanut allergy?

Seafood allergy includes allergy to either fish or shellfish although the main allergenic proteins differ between these groups. ;Worldwide prevalence of allergy to fish is reported to be as high as 1.5% for adults and 7% for children, whereas shellfish allergy is reported to affect up to 2% of adults and 5.5% of children.

In the United States, 0.5% of adults and 0.2% of children reported fish allergy and shellfish allergy was reported in 2.5% versus 0.5% respectively. ;Seafood is therefor a relatively prevalent group of allergens and together with peanut and tree nut accounts for the most severe cases of food-induced anaphylaxis.

A recent study in Canada published in;The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology In Practice, studied the rate to outgrow seafood allergy.

Participants were considered allergic to fish/shellfish if they met at least 1 of the following criteria.

  • Specific IgE levels in the blood for fish of at least 20 kU/L
  • Positive oral challenge
  • Participants reported the most common fish and shellfish allergy culprits were salmon and shrimp respectively.

    The resolution rate for fish was only 0.6% and 0.8% for shellfish,;per person-year.

    Some children may outgrow their food allergies. But the likelihood of that happening depends in large part on the type of food a child is allergic to, as well the severity of the allergy.

    In people who have a food allergy, the body’s immune system mistakenly identifies a specific food or part of a food as something harmful. When that happens, the immune system releases into the body immunoglobulin E, or IgE, antibodies. The next time the IgE antibodies sense that food, they cause a variety of chemicals, including histamine, to be released into the bloodstream.

    Those chemicals trigger the symptoms of the food allergy, such as hives, skin or throat swelling, gastrointestinal problems, or breathing problems. In some people, a food allergy may lead to a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis. Symptoms of anaphylaxis can include the above symptoms as well as severe tightening of the airways , rapid pulse, drop in blood pressure, and/or loss of consciousness. Without emergency medical treatment including epinephrine, anaphylaxis may result in death.

    It is possible to have an allergic reaction to almost any type of food. But some foods lead to allergies more frequently than others. Of the common food allergies, milk, egg, soy and wheat allergies are the ones children most often outgrow by the time they are in their late teens.
