Lone Star Tick Bite Can Make You Allergic to Red Meat

The tick bites that cause meat allergies are usually memorable. The bite causes itching and/or swelling and persists while the body is building up an immune reaction to it. This initial reaction to the tick bite programs the immune system to react for meat.

It always takes several hours or more before it causes symptoms including any or all of the following:

  • Nausea, vomiting, flatulence, and/or diarrhea.
  • Rash or hives anywhere on the skin.
  • Sneezing.
  • Headaches.
  • Asthma.
  • Anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction in which air passages are blocked by swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, and/or lining of the throat.

Allergic reactions can also be triggered by cat dander, which contains the allergenic sugar alpha-gal, and by injection or insertion of products of animal origin, including some vaccines. It is OK to get a vaccination with a product made by incubating a virus or a microbe in eggs, but not to get a vaccination of a product made with horse serums. In at least one case, a man who received a pig’s valve to repair the mitral valve of his heart went into anaphylaxis after the procedure.

Meat allergies caused by sensitization after lone star tick bites are relatively rare in Texas, but much more common in the southeastern United States. In states such as Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas, up to almost 50% of the population may have this problem.

Delayed Allergic Reaction To Red Meat

Why does a person with alpha-gal allergy experience a reaction several hours after eating red meat, instead of like a peanut allergy which can happen immediately?

Theres two main answers to thatthe first of which is that alpha-gal is a sugar. So much of what we know about allergies in general center on proteins. Part of this, is that we believe that the response to the sugar is in some ways a weaker response than we might see for proteins. Secondly, the most severe reactions tend to happen with fattier forms of meat. The digestion of fat is very different from the way that sugars or proteins are absorbed. The digestion of fat is a process that takes three to hours to deliver fat to the bloodstream.

Typically, allergic reactions to mammalian meat occurs 2-6 hoursafter ingesting the meats, and can be severe. Whats interesting, is that these allergic reactions to mammalian meat dont typically occur until 1 to 3 months after being bitten by an infected tick!

Can some ticks cause you to be allergic to meat?

In some cases, yes.

Spring marks the beginning of tick season and this year, the tick population is expected to surge this year.

With it comes the potential for tick bites, which could result in several complications, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and in some cases, cause some people to develop an allergy to red meat after being bitten.

Lone star ticks, in certain cases, can cause an allergy to red meat after someone has been bitten by the tick.

This species of tick entered Ohio over the last decade or so. It has since spread throughout the state, although it is more common in Southern Ohio, said Tim McDermott, an educator with Ohio State University Extension, the outreach arm of The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences .

While the lone star tick prefers a wooded habitat, in many cases, it can also be found along the perimeter of pasture and hay fields that extend into the grass, McDermott said.

Its known to be an aggressive biter of humans, and while this tick isnt known to vector or transmit Lyme disease, it can vector other diseases such as ehrlichiosis, southern tick associated-rash illness, tularemia, as well as some viral diseases, McDermott said. It has also been associated with causing an allergic syndrome in some people after being bitten.

According to published reports, humans dont have alpha-gal, but they can have an immune response to it.

So How Exactly Does A Lone Star Tick Cause Alpha

There are two ways this can happen. Either tick saliva may cause a big enough reaction that triggers the allergic response or it may happen after the tick bites another animal, like a dog or deer, says Dr. Commins.

These animals are sources of alpha-gal, and if a tick then bites you , it may prime your immune system to overreact after you eat red meat. Once the sugar makes its way through your blood, your body will pump out histamine in response, spurring an allergic reaction.

This allergic response takes a few weeks to develop. If youre someone who rarely has red meat, then you can go weeks between the tick bite and having some steak before knowing anything is really wrong, Commins says.

We can joke about the sadness of not being able to sit down to a good burger, but this allergy can be very serious. The first reaction can be anaphylactic, says Commins, which can cause a range of life-threatening symptoms, like trouble breathing or low blood pressure. We have seen patients whose first reaction lands them in the ER, he says.

As crazy as it sounds, this is far more common than you might think. One 2018 study found that in 28 of 85 cases of anaphylaxis, alpha-gal was the cause, per the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Among those analyzed in the study, alpha-gal was the top reason for having an anaphylactic reaction.

Its a case of cruel irony indeed that a tick named after Texas can render you unable to eat red meat. If its sushi you crave, youll be just fine, but barbecue is out of the question. If youre bitten by a lone star tick and get the short end of the stick, what you really become allergic to is a carbohydrate called galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose. Alpha-gal is in most mammalian cell membranes, so the allergy doesnt extend to non-mammalian meat. Poultry and seafood are all fine. And you really shouldnt eat apes, but theoretically you couldthey dont have alpha-gal either . Heck, you could even eat human meat if you wanted. The reason our bodies can recognize and react to alpha-gal as a foreign molecule is that we dont already have it in our cells. If we did, an allergy to alpha-gal would actually present as some kind of autoimmune disorder, where the body starts attacking itself.

The tick that sickened Comodore, 65, can make those afflicted allergic to red meat, and that;allergy can last for years or in some cases, for life, according to health experts.

“I was wiped out,” she said Tuesday.

The;tick, called a Lone Star tick, was initially found in the southeastern United States, but its aggressive nature has made it the;dominant tick in Suffolk County, experts say.;

The number of people with the meat;allergy, called alpha-gal syndrome, is not formally tracked. But doctors;have;treated hundreds of cases in Suffolk County, said Dr. Brianne Navetta-Modrov, an allergist and immunologist with Stony Brook Advanced Specialty Care in Commack.

Moreover, the doctors worry that the number of cases of alpha-gal syndrome is increasing;on Long Island because the number of these bugs is rising. They’re most active during the warmer months.

So far this year, the;Lone Star represents 80 percent of the ticks identified at the Stony Brook tick lab,;Navetta-Modrov said. That represents a significant jump from the 58 percent identified this time last year.;

“There’s really no treatment,” Navetta-Modrov said. “People have to avoid red meat.”

“I see one new case a day this time of year,”McGintee said.

“It was scary.”

    What You Can Do About Meat Allergy

    The obvious solution to a meat allergy is not to eat meat. Mild symptoms can be treated with Diphenhydramine , but anaphylactic reactions have to be treated with injections of epinephrine . If you have ever had an anaphylactic reaction after eating meat, you should have get a prescription Epi-Pen and keep it with you at all times, and other, responsible members of your household should know how to give you an injection if you are unable to give it to yourself.;

    If your household includes a cat, it may be essential to vacuum once or twice a week, cleaning upholstery as well as carpets and floors, and it may also be helpful to buy a HEPA air filter to remove cat dander from the air.     While this isnt technically a disease, the lone star tick is most famous for its ability to spur a red meat allergy.     People most commonly report ehrlichiosis in the southeastern and south-central regions of the U.S., but its worth noting that Missouri, Arkansas, New York, and Virginia experienced more than half of all reported cases in 2018, the CDC notes.
