Do Allergies Cause Dizziness And Nausea

A Primer On Allergies

Apple’s iOS 7 Causing Nausea, Headaches, Dizziness, Vomiting and Vertigo!?

An allergic reaction occurs when your body reacts to a foreign substance, such as pollen spores or dust mites. These substances are not harmful to most people, but if you have an allergy, your body launches a full-on attack.

The is the allergen is not an infection that requires fighting, but an irritant that should be ignored, explains James R. Haden, MD, president of the Asthma and Allergy Clinic of Fort Worth, Texas.

The immune system unleashes antibodies and histamines that cause inflammation, sneezing, coughing, and the general misery that follows.

About 50 million people in the United States have allergies. Thats about one in every seven people, according to the American College of Asthma, Allergies and Immunology.

How To Treat Sinus

To treat lightheadedness, get as much rest as you can because the light feeling in your head should pass when you lie down. For dizziness, you will need to treat your sinus problems.

When treating sinus or ear problems that cause dizziness at home, never use ear candling to remove wax from the ears. These products are so dangerous that the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning in 2010 against their use. The organization noted that this method poses a risk for burns and does not have any scientific evidence to support its use to remove ear wax or help ear infections.

If you have allergies that contribute to your sinus problems, take antihistamines to reduce the allergic reaction and mucus buildup in your sinuses. Next, try decongestants to reduce inflammation and congestion in your sinus passages. While decongestants can ease sinus pressure and subsequent dizziness, do not take them for an extended time without consulting with your doctor. Nasal decongestant sprays can have a rebound effect and cause worse congestion if used for several days in a row.

If you continue to feel dizziness or lightheadedness after treating your problem at home, call a doctor to see if you need a prescription or an alternative treatment to help your sinus or ear problems.

What Are Your Sinuses

Behind the bones of your face are four pairs of air cavities your sinuses. Their primary role is to produce mucus that moisturizes the nasal passage and to ward off pollutants and microorganisms. Because theyre usually filled with air, sinuses also help to lighten the weight of your skull.

When the sinus tissue becomes irritated or inflamed, the cavities can fill with fluid and blockages can result. Colds, allergies or physical conditions such as polyps or a deviated septum can all create blockages. Sinusitis occurs when the blocked fluid becomes infected as a result of fungal, viral or bacterial colonization.

A Side Effect From Allergy Medication

Many people reach for over-the-counter antihistamine pills to treat allergies. Dizziness may be a possible side effect, depending on the type of antihistamine that you take.

The oldest antihistamines on the market which tend to cause drowsiness as a side effect are more likely to cause other side effects, including dizziness, in some people.

If this happens, your doctor may recommend that you switch to newer antihistamines, which dont tend to cause side effects like dizziness or drowsiness. Talk to your doctor about which medication may be right for you.

Causes Of Nausea In Seasonally Allergic People

The most common symptom of seasonal allergies is an increase in mucus production. This usually means runny noses and watery eyes for the seasonal allergy sufferer. Frequently, this excess mucus can run down your throat and into your stomach. The added mucus in the stomach may lead to nausea and even vomiting. In addition, the loss of fluids can lead to dehydration and a nauseous feeling. Finally, seasonal allergies can lead to sinus congestion. When this occurs, inflammation and congestion of the inner ear can impact balance and leave you feeling dizzy and/or nauseous.

What Is The Inner Ear

Your inner ear plays an important role in your hearing and balance. Its primary function is to receive sound waves that come in through the outer ear and go through the middle ear, where the sound makes your eardrum vibrate. These vibrations travel to the inner ear, which transmits them to the brain as nerve impulses.

Your inner ear is a labyrinth of fluid-filled tubes and sacs. It has three main parts:

  • The cochlea, a shell-shaped structure that sends sound impulses to the brain
  • The semicircular canals, which use your heads movement to sense your position in space
  • The vestibule, which is your primary balance system

Messages run through this system to the brain by way of the vestibulocochlear nerve. This nerve has two branches. One is responsible for hearing and one for balance. An inner ear infection happens when this nerve or the structures around it get irritated or inflamed.

A less common cause is allergies. These can affect the Eustachian tube, an organ that connects the middle ear to the nose and throat. The Eustachian tube is responsible for regulating pressure in the middle ear the increased mucus production associated with allergies can result in swelling and inflammation of this organ, negatively impacting not only the nose but also the ears, since all the structures are connected.

The vestibular system, located in the inner ear, controls balance inflammation and infection in the middle ear can therefore cause dizziness and vertigo.

The State Of West Coast Air In Fall 2021

Dizziness, Nausea and Vomiting (Medical Symptom)

Fall for West Coasters looks a little different. While the air may cool slightly, making way for activities like hiking, autumn and its weather concerns can leave you on the edge of your seat.

No matter how far you are from the source of a wildfire, the threat of smoke-filled skies, property damage, and health concerns can stir up feelings of worry throughout your community. Wildfire burns create excessive amounts of smoke, polluting the air outdoors for miles. And since wildfires travel quickly, smoke can enter your home at a moments notice, impacting the health of you and your family and potentially creating long-term respiratory issues. Even if you are able to evacuate, there will still be lingering smoke in your indoor air after its been deemed safe to return.

Wildfire Season: What to Expect in 2021

You guessed itthis wildfire season is also predicted to be above-average, and we have the climate crisis to thank for that. With most of the nation currently experiencing droughts and higher temperatures, experts predict wildfire season could last longer than normal.

Why Is Dizziness Paired With Nausea

Nausea typically accompanies dizziness. The reason for this frequent pairing is not fully understood, but it is believed to be the result of sensory conflict. Generally speaking, the brain understands your position from the visual information it receives from the eyes and the alignment information it receives from the inner ear .

The part of the brain that resolves conflicts between these two is the same part that can force you to vomit. The theory is that when there is a vision/balance conflict, the brain assumes it has been poisoned and attempts to purge the body of the offender.

Dizziness And Balance Disturbances

Dizziness is a general term for many different symptoms. While it generally means an abnormal sensation of motion, it can also mean imbalance, lightheadedness, blacking out, staggering, disorientation, weakness and other sensations. Symptoms can range from mild and brief to severe spinning sensations accompanied by nausea also known as vertigo. For clarity the definitions we use to talk about dizziness are used.

Dizziness A general term for all abnormal symptoms of balance and stability.

Imbalance Inability to keep ones balance especially when standing.

Lightheadedness The feeling of nearly passing out, similar to the feeling you might have if you hold your breath for a long time.

Vertigo The sensation that you or your surroundings are moving or spinning or whirling.

Balance requires the interaction between many different organs and systems in the body. The brain is the central processing center for all balance information coming from the senses and for all information going out to the muscles of balance. Input comes from three main areas: vision, the balance portion of the inner ear, and the touch . Vision is an important cue to the brain which tells us if we are moving relative to our surroundings.
