What About Side Effects

After giving your child a dose of medicine, be on the lookout for side effects or allergic reactions. The pharmacist or product packaging may warn you about specific side effects, such as drowsiness or hyperactivity.

If your child has side effects such as a rash, hives, vomiting, or diarrhea, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Penicillin and other antibiotics are among the most common prescription drugs to cause an allergic reaction.

If your child develops wheezing, has trouble breathing, or difficulty swallowing after taking a medicine, seek emergency help by calling 911 or going to the emergency department immediately. These could be symptoms of a serious allergic reaction that requires emergency care.

Sometimes children have unusual reactions to medicines, such as hyperactivity from diphenhydramine, which usually makes adults feel sleepy. Tell your doctor if this happens.

How Has Aerius Been Studied

Aerius has been studied in a total of eight studies involving about 4,800 adult and adolescent patients with allergic rhinitis . The effectiveness of Aerius was measured by looking at the change in the symptoms before and after two or four weeks of treatment.

Aerius has also been studied in 416 patients with urticaria. The effectiveness was measured by looking at the change in the symptoms before and after six weeks of treatment.

In all studies, the effectiveness of Aerius was compared with that of placebo .

Additional studies were presented to show that the syrup, oral solution and orodispersible tablets are treated by the body in the same way as the tablets, and to show that they can be used safely in children.

What If My Child Doesn’t Want To Take The Medicine

Try these tips to get kids to take “yucky” medicines:

  • Some kids may prefer it if medicines are chilled. Check with your pharmacist to see if chilling the medicine is safe because refrigeration may alter the effectiveness of some drugs.
  • Before mixing a medicine with food or liquid, check with your pharmacist to make sure that it won’t harm its effectiveness. Mixing the medicine with a small amount of liquid or soft food may make it more appealing. Use only a small amount of food and make sure your child eats all it to get the complete dose of medicine. Avoid mixing medicine in a baby’s bottle a baby who doesn’t finish the bottle might not get all it.
  • If you use a syringe, try squirting the medicine on the inside of the child’s cheek, where there are no taste buds.
  • If your child has trouble swallowing a tablet or capsule medicine, ask your pharmacist if you can crush it and mix it with soft food .
  • Some pharmacies offer flavorings such as chocolate, cherry, grape, and bubblegum to make drugs like antibiotics and cough syrup more appealing to kids. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of flavoring in medicine, especially if your child has an allergy to dyes or sweeteners.

If your child spits out or vomits medicine, don’t give another dose call your doctor for instructions.

And, if your child isn’t getting better or gets worse while taking the medicine, talk to your doctor.

Q: Is It Ok To Use Medications Past Their Expiration Dates

Denmark: A cure for allergies – The Cure

My wife and I have this argument several times a year. I discover some perfectly good food of uncertain age in the refrigerator. She wants to throw it away better safe than sorry! I say if the color looks right, it smells like food, and tastes alright, we should eat it. And with that another perfectly good pasta dish is tossed out.

We have similar discussions about expired medications. I’d heard medications were often safe and effective well past their expiration date she’s ready to throw them out if they’re even close to the date on the bottle.

How Does Aerius Work

The active substance in Aerius, desloratadine, is an antihistamine. It works by blocking the receptors to which histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms, normally attaches itself. When the receptors are blocked, histamine cannot have its effect, and this leads to a decrease in the symptoms of allergy.

How Do I Know Which Otc Allergy Medicine Is Right For Me

When determining which type of OTC allergy medication is right for you, consider your worst allergy symptoms.

There is a lot of crossover among the different categories, but in the most simple terms, antihistamines are best for itchy, sneezy noses and help itchy eyes, says Dr. Passer. Nasal sprays are best for congestion and post nasal drainage, but help itch quite a bit, too, and decongestants help with congestion. OTC eye drops are best for eye symptoms.

I dont think there is any differentiation between the medication categories for pollen versus, say, indoor allergens like dust or dog dander, she adds. It really is all the same process in the bodyit just comes from different sources.

How Do Antihistamines Work

Best Drugs to Treat Constipation

When you are exposed to an allergen — for example, ragweed pollen — it triggers your immune system. People with allergies have an exaggerated immune response. Immune system cells known as “mast cells” release a substance called histamine, which attaches to receptors in blood vessels, causing them to enlarge. Histamine also binds to other receptors causing redness, swelling, itching, and changes in secretions. By blocking histamine and keeping it from binding to receptors, antihistamines prevent these symptoms.

What Are Some Of The Commonly Misused Otc Medicines

There are two OTC medicines that are most commonly misused.

Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant found in many OTC cold medicines. The most common sources of abused DXM are “extra-strength” cough syrup, tablets and gel capsules. OTC medications that contain DXM often also contain antihistamines and decongestants. DXM may be swallowed in its original form or may be mixed with soda for flavor, called “robo-tripping” or “skittling.” Users sometimes inject it. These medicines are often misused in combination with other drugs, such as alcohol and marijuana.

Loperamide is an anti-diarrheal that is available in tablet, capsule, or liquid form. When misusing loperamide, people swallow large quantities of the medicine. It is unclear how often this drug is misused.

Can A Person Overdose On These Otc Medicines

Yes, a person can overdose on cold medicines containing DXM or loperamide. An overdose occurs when a person uses enough of the drug to produce a life-threatening reaction or death .

As with other opioids, when people overdose on DXM or loperamide, their breathing often slows or stops. This can decrease the amount of oxygen that reaches the brain, a condition called hypoxia. Hypoxia can have short- and long-term mental effects and effects on the nervous system, including coma and permanent brain damage and death.

Drugs Used In Palliative Care

The Ontario Drug Benefit program covers some drugs used in palliative care . The drugs must be:

  • prescribed by a doctor or nurse practitioner on the Palliative Care Facilitated Access List
  • listed in the official Ontario Drug Benefit Formulary, Part VI-B: Facilitated Access to Palliative Care Drug Products

If your doctor or nurse practitioner is not registered on the Palliative Care Facilitated Access List, the drugs may still be covered if your doctor or nurse practitioner submits a coverage request to the Exceptional Access Program either by fax or by calling the Exceptional Access Programs telephone request service. Note that you will also need to consult with a doctor or nurse practitioner who is registered on the Palliative Care Facilitated Access List if you are requesting a high strength opioid through the Exceptional Access Program, including the telephone request service.

How Do These Otc Medicines Affect The Brain

Flonase Allergy Relief Nasal Spray 24 Hour Non Drowsy ...

DXM is an opioid without effects on pain reduction and does not act on the opioid receptors. When taken in large doses, DXM causes a depressant effect and sometimes a hallucinogenic effect, similar to PCP and ketamine. Repeatedly seeking to experience that feeling can lead to addiction-a chronic relapsing brain condition characterized by inability to stop using a drug despite damaging consequences to a person’s life and health.

Loperamide is an opioid designed not to enter the brain. However, when taken in large amounts and combined with other substances, it may cause the drug to act in a similar way to other opioids. Other opioids, such as certain prescription pain relievers and heroin, bind to and activate opioid receptors in many areas of the brain, especially those involved in feelings of pain and pleasure. Opioid receptors are also located in the brain stem, which controls important processes, such as blood pressure, arousal, and breathing.
