Reversing Food Allergies

There is no cure for food allergies, nor are there any medications that can prevent reactions. The only sure-fire way to avoid an allergic response is to omit known food allergens from your diet. This is not always a straightforward process.

Skin-prick tests are used to diagnosed allergies and can used on any food allergen, including eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, and wheat. Similarly, elimination diets don’t always provide a clear picture of which foods are you are truly allergic to and which you are not.

Moreover, people with “true” food allergies are often cross-reactive to a wide range of other foods. These challenges can make avoidance diets both difficult to design and hard to adhere to.

At the early stages of treatment, it often helps to work with a certified dietitian to formulate a sustainable self-management strategy. This not only includes adhering to dietary restrictions but also learning how to read ingredient food labels and avoid cross-contamination.

Immunotherapy: Using The Allergen To Build Immunity

Good news, on the other hand, is that the new research that was conducted recently suggested that peanut allergy can be cured naturally by peanut itself. It stated that if you give kids with peanut allergies small doses of peanut flour, eventually they can safely eat peanuts again. The experimental immunotherapy has already proven effective at a mindboggling 84% success rate.1

Note: Immunotherapy should be conducted only under the guidance of the expert.

Andrew Clark of Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, UK, who co-led the team that developed the treatment, reportedly said, Weve shown fantastic results, with 80 to 90 per cent of children being able to tolerate eating peanuts regularly after treatment.

Before this, the only option to prevent an allergic reaction was to avoid eating food containing nuts or to avoid any sort of contact with them. Moreover, most doctors also regularly prescribe an injection of epinephrine and advise patients to ensure they always have a ready supply of antihistamines.

Mild And Severe Reactions

Symptoms can involve just one area of the body, or more than one area.

  • A mild reaction involves a mild symptom that affects only one area of the body.
  • A reaction that involves any severe symptom is a severe reaction.
  • A reaction that involves mild symptoms in more than one body area is also a severe reaction.

Severe reactions can quickly progress to anaphylaxis, a condition that can be life-threatening. For this reason, severe reactions must be treated with epinephrine.

Yes, You Can Reverse Food Allergies: How I Did It ...

Indoor allergens, such as mold and other toxins, are common hidden allergens that often provoke severe fatigue and brain fog.

Mold is a dangerous indoor toxin. Tips to avoid it:

  • Investigate damp locations in your home and plug any leaks.

  • Get rid of things that attract mold, like furnishings that are damaged by water.

  • Clean shower stalls and curtains, where mold grows, with a non-toxic solution. Hydrogen peroxide in water works well.

  • Keep humidity at under 50 percent in each room of your home, using a dehumidifier if necessary.

Can You Reverse Food Allergy Learn About Food Allergy Desensitization

If you are allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, or other foods, you could have a severe allergic reaction if you accidentally eat one of these substances. Your allergy can limit your ability to travel, enjoy meals with friends, and take part in other social activities. At the Asthma Allergy Centre in Tigard, Oregon, we can use a specialized technique called food allergy desensitization to reduce the severity of your allergies.

What To Do When Someone Is Experiencing Anaphylaxis

If youre with someone whos experiencing anaphylaxis, you should:

  • See if they have an epinephrine auto-injector and help them, if needed.
  • Try to keep the person calm.
  • Help the person lie on their back.
  • Raise their feet about 12 inches and cover them with a blanket.
  • Turn them on their side if theyre vomiting or bleeding.
  • Make sure their clothing is loose so they can breathe.
  • The sooner the person gets their epinephrine, the better.

Avoid giving oral medications, anything to drink, or lifting their head, especially if theyre having trouble breathing.

Your doctor can prescribe emergency epinephrine. The auto-injector comes with a single dose of medication to inject into your thigh. Youll want to teach your family and close friends how to inject the epinephrine in case of an emergency.

    Air Fresheners Boost Allergy Risk

Air fresheners increase risk of allergies and asthma, mostly because of the chemical fragrances they contain, reports a study from the University of California. So whats the alternative? I cant think of a better way to freshen your home or office than with proper ventilation. Open your windows regularly to let fresh air in. If the air outside your home is actually worse than the air inside, try a commercial air purifier.

Many cleaning sprays are also hazardous to your health. Studies report that using a household cleaning spray just once a week elevates your risk of developing asthma by 30 to 50 percent. Try natural alternatives to cleaning spray instead. At home we use water and baking soda for most cleaning jobs. Vinegar and water is great for glass and tile.

What Foods Are Likely To Cause An Allergic Reaction

    Reversing Food Intolerances

Food allergies are a very common issue. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4% of adults have allergies to specific foods. In addition, about 4 to 6% of children have this problem. Although people can become allergic to a wide range of foods, there are a number of foods that are especially likely to cause allergic symptoms.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Food Allergy

Since the severity of food allergies will vary, you can experience a variety of different symptoms after you consume a possible allergen. If your allergy is severe, you might have difficulty breathing after you consume certain foods. You could also develop a rash, vomit, or have stomach cramps, and your face may begin to swell. If you develop these problems after you eat a specific food, you should seek medical help right away.

If your food allergies are relatively minor, you might have a headache or become flushed after you eat certain foods. In addition, you could develop mild stomach cramps or other digestive problems.

Are Elimination Diets Helpful For Food Sensitivities

Elimination diets remove common offenders, like gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, corn, etc. for a set period of time. Every elimination diet is different, as it is up to you to decide which foods to eliminate. Basically you choose the foods you want to remove, eliminate them for 4-6 weeks and then systematically re-introduce them one by one to see how your body feels.

Elimination diets are the best way to understand how foods affect your specific body. But the biggest frustration is that you may either be eliminating foods that youre not reactive to OR completely miss foods that you are reacting to.

Bottom line: elimination diets can be really helpful, but it can be like reaching around in the dark. Testing can help guide your elimination diet so you can experience the best results possible.

    Who Is At Risk

Anyone can experience a food allergy, but some risk factors make it more likely to develop:

    • Family history: Food allergies can run in families. If close family members have asthma or any allergic diseases, including food allergies, eczema, and seasonal allergies, the person is more likely to develop food allergies.
    • Other allergic conditions: A child with one allergic condition often develops others, too. These conditions include food allergies, asthma, and seasonal allergies.
    • Early experiences:Research has shown that babies born by cesarean delivery may be more likely to develop food allergies. Introducing common allergens, such as peanuts, earlier in life can reduce the risk of food allergies developing.
    • Gut bacteria:Some research shows that people with nut or seasonal allergies have altered gut bacteria. Specifically, they have higher levels of Bacteroidales and lower levels of Clostridiales strains. Scientists are trying to determine whether influencing gut bacteria could help treat or prevent allergies.

Diagnosed With Arthritis At Age 25

Yes, You Can Reverse Food Allergies: How I Did It

When I was 25 years old, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, a degenerative disease that doctors could do nothing to heal. They offered me drugs for the pain, and said the only thing that I could do is have surgery.

But they couldnt cure me. I was told that I would probably end up in a wheelchair one day. Not fun to hear when youre only in your 20s.

In addition to the arthritis, I also suffered from chronic fatigue, chronic sinus infections and seasonal allergies, and chemical sensitivities.

    Cleansing To Reverse Food Allergies

My dads advice on how to get rid of food allergies is to first do a 21 day fast on cabala juice. Cabala is actually an acronym for Carrot, Apple, Beet, Apple, Lemon, Apple. Apples listed three times because you include a red, green and yellow apple. So essentially its carrot, beet, apple and lemon juice. You drink 3 litres a day and you do that for 21 days, after which your food allergies will be gone.

Then following the fast here is a protocol on how to safely re-introduce the foods youve been allergic to back into the body.

The Avoidance Of Allergens Remains The First

Daniel More, MD, is a board-certified allergist and clinical immunologist. He is an assistant clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine and currently practices at Central Coast Allergy and Asthma in Salinas, California.

If you have been diagnosed with a food allergy, the simplest and most effective way to prevent a reaction is to avoid the foods that cause problems. Food allergens can often be hidden in the foods you buy, making it all the more important to remain vigilant.

In some cases, medications may be needed to treat acute allergy symptoms. Mild to moderate food allergies often respond to over-the-counter antihistamines. Severe reactions may require an injection of epinephrine to treat a potentially life-threatening, whole-body allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis, along with supportive care.

People at risk of anaphylaxis may benefit from immunotherapy, a procedure used to desensitize the immune system to a an inhalant or venom. Palforzia is a peanut food immunotherapy approved for peanut allergy by the Food and Drug Administration .

A number of experimental drugs are also being studied to prevent or treat allergies in new and novel ways.

How Can You Determine If You Have A Food Intolerance

If you suspect you have a food intolerance you should consult your physician. There are tests which can determine some foods intolerances, but they are not as easy to detect as allergies. Tests like IgG tests have not been proven to show food intolerances.

Elimination diets are considered the gold standard for determining food intolerances. These take some time and should be done under the guidance of a registered dietician. Precision Nutrition gives instructions on how to do an elimination diet on your own here

You can also start by keeping a food journal to determine which foods seem to be causing the symptoms you are experiencing. Keep in mind that unlike allergic symptoms, food intolerance symptoms dont usually show up immediately.

How To Reverse Food Allergies With Diet

    Reversing Food Allergies

Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride used her discoveries in order to create the GAPS diet, which is an effective tool in reversing food allergies and other symptoms of leaky gut. She detailed her findings in her groundbreaking book, Gut and Psychology Syndrome: Natural Treatment for Autism, Dyspraxia, A.D.D., Dyslexia, A.D.H.D., Depression, Schizophrenia.

The GAPS Diet is based on SCD or the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Dr. Campbell-McBride modified this diet by making it more Weston A. Price Foundation -friendly. She added bone broth, cod liver oil, and quality traditional fats to SCD.

Unfortunately I cant recommend the GAPS book or diet anymore for the same reason I no longer recommend the WAPF Diet. This is because they still recommend FCLO . Please see my series on FCLO and why I DO NOT recommend this supplement and believe it is dangerous to human health.

That said, I do still recommend the teachings of Dr. Weston A. Price and I recommend his book, Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. So I will continue to recommend that people try the SCD Diet, or simply follow a Paleo Diet, slowly adding back in foods such as butter and cheese one at a time as they can tolerate them. I recommend a 30-day elimination diet, and then slowly add in foods one at a time.

    What Really Causes Food Allergies

My father, Don Tolman, teaches that generally if we have a reaction to a natural whole food it is likely that a particular food contains a super high amount of something that we are lacking in. Its interesting how common nut allergies are. Nuts are one of the highest sources of concentrated phytonutrients. When we take in a food that is concentrated in the phytonutrients we are lacking this can cause a massive reaction. Why? Well maybe because the body wants those phytonutrients for some sort of detoxing to take place. Maybe some toxins have been stored in the body for a long time and when you get this massive hit of phytonutrients youve been missing the body starts to put them to good use and sets about detoxing.

This makes sense to me. Just imagine if you have stored toxicity, you eat something thats designed to get rid of it, it sets a reaction pushing the toxins out of the body, but the reaction is so strong that it nearly can kill you.

Now most people look at that and say if youre allergic to a certain food you should avoid it at all costs. But in fact when you have a reaction to a natural whole food its probably the very thing you should be taking in very small quantities. By taking in tiny amounts of the food you can allow your body to slowly detoxify rather than getting a big hit which could be dangerous.

Food Allergy Vs Sensitivity Vs Intolerance

True food allergies are mediated by the immune system and are caused by either IgG or IgE food-specific antibodies. They occur immediately and can be life threatening, like an anaphylactic reaction by a child who eats peanuts and is allergic. The most common food allergens in the United States include egg, milk, peanut, tree nuts, wheat, shellfish, and soy.

A food sensitivity is a less severe reaction also mediated by the immune system, but tends to be delayed. A person can react to a food they are sensitive to within hours or up to weeks after consumption. This delay between eating a food and reacting to it makes it very difficult to recognize that food is the culprit, and what food or foods specifically are causing symptoms.Delay between eating a food and reacting to it makes it very difficult to recognize that food is the culprit, and what food or foods specifically are causing symptoms.

    Treatments For Allergic Reactions

Over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants may relieve minor symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Antihistamines prevent symptoms such as hives by blocking histamine receptors so your body doesnt react to the allergens. help clear your nose and are especially effective for seasonal allergies. But dont take them for more than three days.

These medications are available in tablets, eye drops, and nasal sprays. Many OTC drugs also cause drowsiness, so avoid taking them before driving or doing work that requires a lot of concentration.

Swelling, redness, and itching may be reduced with ice and topical creams that contain corticosteroids.

Make an appointment with your doctor if OTC drugs dont work. Call your doctor right away if you have an allergic reaction to the medication.

There’s No Way To Reverse Or Cure A Food Allergy Yet But Scientists Are Working On It In The Meantime Here Are The Existing New And Coming Treatments Including Oral Immunotherapy That May Help Curb Allergic Reactions

Food allergies are a serious problem. About one in 10 adults has a food allergy, according to a 2019 study, as do one in 13 children, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Allergic reactions can range from mild to potentially life threatening.

If you eat a food you are allergic to the symptoms can include itchy lips, mouth or tongue hives vomiting diarrhea swelling of the face and throat wheezing and even anaphylaxis, a dangerous reaction that results in a drop in blood pressure, trouble breathing, a sense of impending doom, and a loss of consciousness.

With stakes so incredibly high, millions of peopleparticularly the 32 million people in the U.S. with food allergieswould love a cure. But while there are treatments, ways to reduce severe reactions , and a chance that some children will outgrow an allergy, theres no surefire way to reverse a food allergy.

It would be amazing unfortunately, we dont have a way to do that, says allergist David Stukus, MD, a member of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology . There is no cure.

Even without a cure, most people can manage their food allergy successfully, but it can be a risky game. Food allergies can develop at any age, one mild reaction doesnt mean you wont have a more severe one next time, and in some cases, they can potentially be fatal, says the American College of Asthma, Allergy & Immunology .

Some people feel like theyre living with a ticking time bomb, says Dr. Stukus.
