Skin Prick Or Scratch Test
One of the most common allergy tests is the skin prick test for allergens, which commonly checks for allergies to airborne particles like pollen and animal dander. First, your doctor or allergist will prick the skin on your back or forearm with a thin needle, or theyll scratch it with a sterile device to lightly puncture it. Call your pharmacy or prescribing physician if you are unsure about the names of your medications.
In general, we ask that you try to avoid these medications for 7 days prior to your appointment. If you are very sick and cant avoid these medications, you should keep your appointment anyway we may be able to replace your medications with ones that dont affect the skin testing results.
As a rule, asthma medications do NOT affect skin testing results and should be continued. Also, single-ingredient decongestant preparations can be taken. All Nasal sprays can be used except Azelastine, Astelin, Astepro, Dymista, and Patanase. If there are any questions about a certain medication, please speak to your pharmacist or our nursing staff.

What You Need To Avoid Before Allergy Test
- Prior to the allergy test, stop taking Zyrtec, Xyzal, Claritin, Clarinex, , or Allegra for 7 days.
- Avoid using over-the-counter antihistamines for seven days before to the test .

- Do not take any tricyclic antidepressants. If you do, kindly let the allergy nurse know.

- Take no medication that contains beta-blockers. If you do, kindly let the allergy nurse know. Betablockers are prescription drugs that are used to treat migraine headaches, high blood pressure, heart issues, performance anxiety, or glaucoma , and they can only be stopped with the prescribing doctors approval. Metoprolol or timolol, as examples.
- Do not use scented body lotion, hair spray, or cologne. Its possible for other allergy sufferers to be fragrance sensitive. Good to use deodorant.
