Using Essential Oils For Skin Allergies

Allergies

Allergic reactions that appear topically carry their own sets of variables, from the severity of the reaction to the range of causes. You might even react externally to something you consume.

Allergies that manifest on the skin can be itchy or painful, cause swelling and redness, and other unpleasant symptoms. Once youve identified the allergen and have avoided it, the reaction typically subsides. If its something you really need relief from, though, there are things you can do to ease the reaction. WebMDs remedies include :

  • Cooling it down
  • Soaking it in a soothing substance
  • Using an anti-itch cream

Making a compress of something like ground oats, it suggests, can help to soothe the inflammation and itching.

  • Natural Remedy Application: Cooling and anti-inflammatory essential oils can be helpful for relieving symptoms of a skin allergy reaction. If you know youre not allergic to any of them, some suggested oils to dilute into a carrier oil include frankincense, peppermint, and lavender.
  • A strong anti-inflammatory carrier like calendula-infused coconut oil is suggested, though calendula may be a problem if you have a ragweed allergy as they share the same family!

What Not To Do

Contrary to what several essential oil companies recommend, the oils generally should not be swallowed, Power says. The body absorbs more this way, boosting the chance that they will interact with medications or cause an allergic or toxic reaction. Even continued exposure to small amounts can lead to fatigue and headaches. Taking in larger amounts of certain oils — like tea tree oil, wintergreen, and camphor — can lead to throat swelling, a racing heart, vomiting, and even seizures, says the Tennessee Poison Center, which saw the number of toxic essential oil exposures double from 2011 to 2015.

Meanwhile, some essential oils, like eucalyptus, contain compounds called phenol that can irritate the respiratory tract if inhaled, particularly for babies. And some have hormone-like properties that studies suggest could harm children and pregnant women.

I would certainly advise teens and children not to use essential oils, says Jessica Krant, MD, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York.

For pregnant women, even oils used on your skin can cross the placental barrier and impact an unborn baby. And swallowing some rare oils, including pennyroyal, can lead to miscarriage. The safest bet during pregnancy: Work with a professional who knows how to use them or skip them altogether, Power says.

Overuse can also lead to an allergy over time, Bailey says.

Once you become sensitized, you will forever be allergic to it, Bailey says.

  • Don’t keep your pet in a room with an essential oil diffuser running, and leave doors open so they can freely move about.

Balancing Your Immune System With Essential Oils

Keep Your Immune System Running Well & Youll Have Less Problems with Seasonal Allergies.

Allergies are a result of an over-active immune system. A generally harmless substance causes some peoples immune systems to react. It then creates a defense mechanism to try and get rid of the perceived threat. This shows in signs such as a runny nose, itching skin, itchy or watery eyes, coughing, or wheezing.

A weak or impaired immune system can expose the body to increased susceptibility to infections and disease. Many things can weaken your immunity. For example: external toxins, viruses and physical or emotional stress.

This frustrating allergy symptom is the result of two things. First off, your nose starts to secrete mucus as part of the general allergy response. Second, sinuses, capillaries, and airways constrict as another part of that same response.

The outcome is you cant breathe, you have trouble sleeping, and you rub your nose raw with tissue paper while trying to keep yourself presentable.

So how can essential oils help?

Well, many oils can help relax airways . Also, other oils act as decongestants and expectorants helping you get rid of the extra mucus. Heres a recipe to help you do both:

Clear sinus steam inhalation

Bring a pot of water to a boil. Allow it to cool only slightly, and then add the essential oils to the water. Lean over the pot and inhale deeply. You can also use a towel to cover your head and the pot for more concentrated effects.

Safety note: peppermint essential oil contains menthol, a compound thats known to slow down breathing in babies and young kids. If you are planning on using this recipe with a child under the age of 3, omit the peppermint oil and just stick with the spike lavender.

Do Oil Diffusers Help With Allergies

Spring is coming blend

Diffusing oils in your home can make a difference on the quality of your life during allergy season.

Most popular oil diffusers use ultrasonic cold-mist technology. This means that the oils will not be heated, keeping their therapeutic properties intact. Heat can alter an essential oil.

Choose from the best essential oils mentioned above. Use what you already have at home, or order an oil bottle or two online. Follow your diffuser instructions on how many drops in total to use. Typically, its around 5-6 drops for an average-sized diffuser unit.

Add the oils to your diffuser and run it for 30-60 minutes at a time. Do give your house and room a break every once in a while, as to not overwhelm yourself with the essential oil scent.

Having the essential oil particles circulate the air in your room can help relieve allergy symptoms. It also provides a calming environment for other respiratory conditions.

If you are unsure if a certain essential oil may be harmful to your pet or child be sure to consult your veterinarian or pediatrician for advice.
  • Undiluted essential oils can cause skin irritations. All essential oils should be first mixed with a carrier oil, such as jojoba oil, almond oil,;coconut oil, or olive oil and skin tested;to determine if youre allergic or not.
  • For best and safest results when using essential oils, be sure to consult a doctor or a qualified aromatherapist before treatment. Especially if you currently have a known health condition or are on any medications.
