What Are The Allergy Shot Build
We offer three different build-up schedules to help patients reach their maintenance phase: traditional, cluster, and rush. The traditional schedule requires 1-3 shots a week, there are no appointments necessary, and it takes patients 3-6 months to reach maintenance. The cluster schedule requires two appointments a week for 4-9 weeks to reach maintenance, these appointments last for approximately two hours and must be scheduled. The rush schedule requires 1 scheduled full day appointment followed by 16 visits to reach maintenance.
How Long Does It Take For The Allergy Shots To Start Working
It can take anywhere from three months to over a year for allergy shots to start working.
This is not a quick fix, Dr. Harbour said. Typically we tell clients that this is something we commit to for the long-haul.
In the meantime, your vet might recommend a prescription medication, like Apoquel or Atopica, to manage your dogs symptoms.
Or they might recommend a dog-safe over-the-counter antihistamine which is usually best paired with an omega-3 supplement.

Cytopoint Allergy Shot Vs Immunotherapy For Dogs
Immunotherapy should not be confused with cytopoint allergy shots, which are intended for short-term relief rather than as a permanent solution.
This is an anti-itch injection given at the veterinary practice that lasts four to eight weeks, Dr. Harbour said. This is a monoclonal antibody that targets the itch mediator and prevents the signal of itch from going to the brain.
So instead of training the immune system to reduce reactions for good like with immunotherapy cytopoint basically just tricks your dogs brain by making her think shes not itchy.
What Should I Expect Afterward
Usually, youâll stay at the doctorâs office for about 30 minutes after you get an allergy shot. That’s to make sure you don’t get side effects like itchy eyes, shortness of breath, a runny nose, or a tight throat. If you get these symptoms after you leave, go back to your doctor’s office or to the nearest emergency room.
Redness, swelling, or irritation right around the site of the injection is normal. These symptoms should go away in 4 to 8 hours.

Nausea Vomiting Or Diarrhea
Some forms of the tetanus vaccine, such as the Tdap, may cause gastrointestinal symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
The CDC estimate that one to three people in 100 will have moderate gastrointestinal symptoms after the Tdap vaccine.
The best course of action is to drink plenty of fluids, rest, and eat plain food to avoid aggravating the gastrointestinal system any further.
The symptoms will usually subside with time.
What Is Rush Immunotherapy
Itâs a faster way to get to a maintenance dose, but itâs also riskier.
During the first part of the treatment, you get doses of the allergen every day instead of every few days. Your doctor will check on you closely, in case you have a bad reaction. In some cases, you may get medicine before you get the dose of the allergen, to help prevent a reaction.

Sublingual Immunotherapy As An Alternative To Allergy Shots
Depending on the type of allergy involved, sublingual immunotherapy may provide a reasonable alternative for those who fear shots.
These types of medication are placed under the tongue, often daily, and can be administered at home rather than in a healthcare provider’s office. Much like allergy shots, sublingual immunotherapy gradually helps build the bodys tolerance to an allergen. Over time, the person may have fewer symptoms and medication needs. The drugs are considered safe and effective, and can be used in children over the age of 2.
There are currently only a limited number of options approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration , including:
- Oralair to treat to five types of northern grass pollen allergies
- Grastek to treat Timothy grass pollen allergy
- Ragwitek to treat ragweed pollen allergy
- Odactra to treat dust mite allergy
Other sublingual drops and tablets have been used in Europe for years but are not currently approved by the FDA. As for safety, there have thus far been no severe reactions or death reports in persons receiving sublingual immunotherapy for allergy.
They Can Make Asthma And Eczema Better
When people think of allergy symptoms, they generally think of itchy eyes and a stuffy or runny nose, or, in worse-case scenarios, anaphylactic shock. And while allergy shots can help prevent all of those, they can also help with related conditions, as well.
If you have asthma, getting your allergies under control may also help reduce flare-ups, improve your breathing, and reduce your need for medications. Eczema, an inflammatory skin condition, is often associated with environmental allergies.

Allergy Shots For Your Child
You have allergies, and your doctor thinks allergy immunotherapy, or allergy shots, might help you feel better. The goal of allergy shots is to improve your allergy symptoms. Allergy shots are given under the skin in your arm. After reaching your highest dose, also called your maintenance dose, your doctor will decide how often you need to come. Eventually most people come every 4 weeks. It takes 3 5 years to finish the treatment.
Build Up And Maintenance
Completing immunotherapy may mean you’ll have to go to the healthcare provider’s office one or more times per week for several months. The treatment is broken up into two phases called the build-up phase and the maintenance phase. During the build-up phase, you are given increasing amounts of the allergen weekly for three to six months.
The second phase is called the maintenance phase. During the build-up phase, your healthcare provider will determine the best dose of medication for you. This is your maintenance dose, which is what you’ll receive for the remaining allergy shots and what your practitioner feels you respond to best. The good news is that during the maintenance phase, you will only need to get shots every 3-4 weeks. The maintenance phase lasts about three to five years.

They’re Not Recommended For Everyone
Most adultsand children ages 5 and upcan get allergy shots. But if you or your child has severe, uncontrolled asthma, your doctor may recommend against them. “In our practice, if a patient’s asthma is flaring or even if they’re sick, we generally wait to give the shot until they’re feeling better,” says Dr. Dziadzio.
Women who become pregnant while in the maintenance phase of allergy shots can continue their treatment. But women shouldn’t start allergy shots for the first time, or increase their dosage, while pregnant.
Certain medicines, like beta blockers, can reduce the effectiveness of epinephrinethe lifesaving drug used to treat anaphylactic shock. Because anaphylaxis is a rare but serious risk for people getting allergy shots, they may not be recommended for people who take these drugs.

Before starting immunotherapy, the allergist will take a complete medical history.

After you receive notice, visit the office, check-in at the desk, and take a seat. Once your name is called, our staff will go over safety information during the first visit.
