What Causes Egg Allergies and can they be Outgrown?

The allergy specialist will conduct a number of tests to monitor your child, either annually or every few years, depending on the allergen. These tests include skin prick tests and blood tests.

These tests indicate changes in the immune system to give us an idea of whether your child has outgrown an allergy or it persists.

When these tests indicate almost no allergic response, your child will have an oral food challenge under medical supervision.

For example, a child will be given the food allergen in increasing amounts in a medical facility. If the child tolerates the food , the food is regularly reintroduced into the diet.

Food challenge tests are also done to see if a child can tolerate foods in a modified form. For example, a child allergic to eggs or cows milk may be able to tolerate baked egg or baked milk.

In general, its only with a medically supervised oral food challenge that allergy specialists can say whether your child has really outgrown their food allergy.

Introducing Egg To Infants

The old idea that avoiding foods like eggs helps prevent infants developing allergies is not supported by research. Around 6 months of age, while continuing breastfeeding, babies should be introduced to a variety of foods, including cooked egg. Eggs should be cooked because raw eggs can carry bacteria.

As with all new foods, its best to introduce cooked egg on its own or with foods that your baby is already having. That way, you can identify any adverse reactions, which may signal an allergic reaction.

Once our clinicians confirm your child has an egg allergy, the first step in treatment is avoiding eggs and food products that contain eggs. While eliminating egg dishes from your childs diet may sound relatively straightforward, eggs are a hidden ingredient in many foods, including baked goods, salad dressing, ice cream and meatballs. Even egg substitutes may potentially contain egg protein. It is important to read labels carefully.

Your childs doctor can give you detailed information on how to read food labels to help you and your child identify and avoid egg protein.

No matter how careful you are, there may be times when your child accidentally eats eggs and has a reaction. When that happens, you can treat the symptoms with antihistamines or epinephrine.

If more than one body system is involved in the allergic reaction for example the skin and lungs it is recommended to use epinephrine. Epinephrine comes in a variety of forms, including auto-injectors such as Epi-Pen, Auvi-Q and other generic forms.

If your childs reaction is mild and only involves a few hives, an over-the-counter or prescription strength antihistamine may ease their symptoms. Your childs doctor can help you decide which option is best for your child in specific circumstances.

Children with allergies to eggs should carry epinephrine with them, or it should be readily available at places where they routinely spend time, such as school, daycare and home.

Is There A Cure For An Egg Allergy

While there is no cure for an egg allergy, oral immunotherapy, which involves gradually increasing daily doses of an allergen to build up tolerance, is at the experimental stage for egg, and parents typically have to pay out of pocket because its not covered by provincial healthcare plans. Studies show that oral immunotherapy may help most children tolerate a small serving of egg if they continue to consume a daily dose of egg protein, but more research is needed. Triassi Asper says that oral immunotherapy may reduce the likelihood of anaphylaxis, but the child will still be allergic.

Its not a cure, she says. The child is eating what theyre allergic to, so sometimes there are side effects of the treatment as well. The only fully accepted treatment is avoidance.

Diagnosis Of Egg Allergy

If your child has any symptoms of egg allergy, see your doctor. Special blood tests can diagnose the cause of allergic reactions. Dont trust other tests that may be offered online or from people without proper medical qualifications.

Most children will outgrow their allergy to eggs. To check if your child is no longer allergic to egg, see your doctor who can arrange for a supervised test.

Introducing Foods That Could Trigger Allergy

When you start introducing solid foods to your baby from around 6 months old, introduce the foods that can trigger allergic reactions one at a time and in very small amounts so that you can spot any reaction.

If your baby already has an allergy, such as a diagnosed food allergy or eczema, or if you have a family history of food allergies, eczema, asthma or hay fever, you may need to be particularly careful when introducing foods. Talk to your GP or health visitor first.

Foods that can trigger an allergic reaction are:

  • foods that contain gluten, including wheat, barley and rye
  • nuts and peanuts

These foods can be introduced from around 6 months as part of your baby’s diet, just like any other foods.

Once introduced and if tolerated, these foods should become part of your baby’s usual diet to minimise the risk of allergy.

Evidence has shown that delaying the introduction of peanut and hen’s eggs beyond 6 to 12 months may increase the risk of developing an allergy to these foods.

Lots of children outgrow their allergies to milk or eggs, but a peanut allergy is generally lifelong.

If your child has a food allergy, read food labels carefully. Avoid foods if you’re not sure whether they contain the food your child is allergic to.

What Is An Allergic Reaction

Its your immune systems job to protect you from pathogens organisms or foreign objects that try to invade your body. In response to the threat, the system creates immunoglobulin E antibodies that attach to your skin, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract.

If and when you encounter that particular pathogen again, your immune systems ready the antibodies release histamine, dilating blood vessels and producing a host of symptoms designed to combat the invader.

Egg Allergy And Vaccinations

Some vaccines are grown in eggs. But the traces of egg protein that remain after the vaccine is made are so tiny that in most cases, people and children with egg allergy can be safely vaccinated. The following vaccines may contain small, residual amounts of egg protein:

  • Seasonal inactivated influenza vaccines
  • Q fever vaccine

The amount of residual egg protein in Yellow fever and Q fever vaccines is generally higher than in seasonal influenza. If you’re allergic to egg and need the Yellow fever vaccine or the Q fever vaccine , you should talk to your allergy or immunology specialist first.

Most people are asked to wait in the place they received their vaccination for 15 minutes in case there are any adverse effects. If youre very concerned, ask staff if you, or your child, can be observed for 30 minutes after the vaccination.

Can Children Outgrow Food Allergies

Many children with food allergies do eventually outgrow their food allergies later in life.

When someone outgrows a food allergy, they become fully tolerant to the food that they used to be allergic to. The food no longer causes them to develop any symptoms of an allergic reaction when they consume it, even if they eat a full serving of the food.

But some children dont outgrow their food allergies, and endup with lifelong allergies to a food or foods.

Egg Allergies And The Flu Vaccine

Most flu vaccines contain small amounts of egg protein. Even so, the CDC recommends that most children with egg allergies receive the standard flu vaccine for their age. According to the CDC, the amount of egg in the flu vaccine is usually too small to cause a severe reaction.

However, if your child has previously had a moderate to severe allergic reaction to egg, involving any symptom other than hives, you’ll need to take special precautions. Your child should receive the vaccine from a health care provider who is trained in identifying and managing a severe allergic reaction. Tell the provider that your child is allergic to egg, so they know to be alert.

If your child has had a previous allergic reaction to egg, and they’re older than 4 years of age, you can also ask for an egg-free flu vaccine. This vaccine is called Flucelvax Quadrivalent.

Monitoring A Food Allergy Over Time

An allergist will often monitor a childs food allergy by following up with repeat tests at different time intervals. Decreasing amounts of allergen-specific IgE may be suggestive that a child is outgrowing the food allergy. The appropriate time to repeat testing is often determined by the age of the child, the food allergen, and other pertinent medical history. Milk, egg, soy, and wheat may be tested more frequently and peanut, tree nut, fish and shellfish tested less often. Test results can be used as a guide to determine when it might be safe to introduce an allergenic food into the diet. If the doctor suspects your child may have outgrown his/her food allergy, an oral food challenge in an allergists office will likely be recommended to determine if the food can be safely incorporated into the diet at home.

Is It Really A Milk Allergy

Your pediatrician may mention the term “allergy” without offering clarification that may help you get a better handle on exactly what your child is facing. Here are the specific types of reactions your child may have to milk:

Classic milk allergy: Classic milk allergy involves both having allergic symptoms within two hours of consuming milk and having the presence of allergic antibodies, or IgE, against various proteins in milk. Allergic symptoms can include hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, and/or anaphylaxis. Presence of antibodies alone does not mean a person has allergy

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome : Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome is a non-IgE immune-mediated reaction that typically presents with vomiting, diarrhea and/or lethargy around 90 minutes after consuming milk or other trigger. Sometimes milk IgE is elevated but most often it is not. FPIES typically occurs in young infants and is commonly outgrown by age three.

Lactose intolerance: Lactose intolerance is a gastrointestinal syndrome that presents with abdominal discomfort, gassiness, bloating, and/or diarrhea. It is typically caused by insufficient lactase, an enzyme that digests lactose. Replacing lactase enzyme or consuming milk products that have lactose removed, prevents symptoms. Lactose intolerance typically occurs in older children and adults and is less likely to be outgrown.

Which Food Allergies Are Commonly Outgrown

About 85% of children allergic to milk, egg, soy, or wheat will outgrow their food allergy. In contrast, only about 15-20% of those with peanut, tree nuts, fish or shellfish will be able to eat those foods later in life. Some children who have a history of an allergic reaction accompanied by high levels of allergen-specific IgE at diagnosis, may be less likely to outgrow their allergy. While it is impossible to know exactly which child or when the child will outgrow the allergy, some may be lucky enough to outgrow their allergy in the early years of life. However, it can occur as late as the teenage years, so it is important for parents and older children not to get discouraged.

The treatment for any allergy is to make sure your child avoids the food hes allergic to.

Eggs are in so many goodies. You have to play detective with this ingredient. Its easy to overlook the many recipes and packaged foods that contain egg protein.

How To Know A Food Allergy Has Been Outgrown

Being diagnosed with a food allergy or having your child diagnosed with a food allergy might feel like a jail sentence.

It can be exhausting to have to scour ingredients lists, find modified recipes and worry about accidentally ingesting the wrong food.

The good news: Some food allergies fade away, with many children managing to outgrow those allergies before they leave kindergarten. And if youre a food-allergy sufferer worried about passing it down to your children, we now know there are ways to prevent food allergies from developing.

How can we tell?

If an allergist like me once diagnosed you with a food allergy and you suspect youve outgrown it, we would perform two tests: a skin-prick test and a blood test.

If the results tell us that you could have outgrown that allergy, well start a food challenge.

Say you were diagnosed with an egg allergy. During a food challenge, youll come to the clinic and eat a tiny piece of egg while we carefully monitor your bodys reaction. After some time, youll try a larger piece of egg. If you dont have an allergic reaction, the process will be repeated until you eat whats considered a full serving.

A food challenge can take several hours. If you reach the milestone of eating an entire serving with no reactions, we can safely say that youve outgrown that allergy.

What Is An Egg Allergy

Egg allergies among the most common IgE-mediated food allergies in children. Fortunately, the majority of children with egg allergy will outgrow it.

Children who are allergic to eggs typically display symptoms within minutes to hours of eating eggs or foods containing eggs. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include difficulty breathing, nausea, hives and more rarely, anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic response.

Study Participants And Recruitment

Eligible study participants included adults who resided in a US household and able to complete the survey in English or Spanish via web or telephone. Similar to our 20092010 national survey,18 this study relied upon a nationally-representative household panel to support population-level inference. Study participants were first recruited from NORC at the University of Chicagos, nationally-representative, probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, with a survey completion rate of 51.2% . Each child was assigned a base, study-specific sampling weight equal to their responding parents non-response adjusted AmeriSpeak sampling weight. Child-specific weights were further adjusted to account for random selection of up to three children/household and raked to external pediatric population totals. Parental weights were reconciled with external population totals associated with age, sex, education, race/ethnicity, housing tenure, telephone status, and Census Division via iterative proportional fitting to improve external validity. In order to increase precision of population parameter estimates, the population-weighted AmeriSpeak responses were then augmented via iterative proportional fitting with calibration-weighted, non-probability-based responses obtained through Survey Sampling International. The complex survey development, sampling, weighting, and analysis procedures utilized here are detailed in Gupta et al 2018.1
