6 to 12 months old: Purchase smooth pine nut butter and mix a small amount into yogurt to reduce the choking risk. To encourage self-feeding, pre-load your babys spoon and either offer it in the air for your baby to grab, or set the spoon down on the edge of your babys bowl or plate for your baby to pick up.Alternatively, you can finely grind raw or roasted pine nuts in a food processor then roll other foods in the ground nut. You can also sprinkle small amounts of ground pine nuts into warm cereal and grain dishes. And dont forget pesto!

12 to 18 months old: Continue to thin smooth pine nut butter with yogurt or applesauce and encourage self-feeding by pre-loading your babys spoon and resting it on the bowl for your baby to pick up. You may also continue to finely grind pine nuts and add to other dishes and fruits. This is a great age range to also explore a variety of pesto sauces to your regular pasta rotation.

They Can Cause A Strange Reaction

Although it’s uncommon, pine nuts may literally leave a bad taste in your mouth.;Eating pine nuts from time to time can cause some people to experience a bitter or metallic taste that lasts for a few days up to two weeks.;”There is arare risk of something called pine mouth, or pine nut syndrome, in which people get a bitter taste in their mouth 12 to 48 hours after eating pine nuts that can last for weeks,” says; Dr. Jampolis. “This is not an allergy, and the cause is unknown.”

Other Names For Tree Nuts

In the past, some products have used other names for tree nuts on their labels. These names are not permitted without the common name of the tree nut also appearing on the label, based on the enhanced labelling requirements for food allergens, gluten sources and added sulphites. However, if you have a tree nut allergy and see one of the following in the list of ingredients on a product you should not eat it.

  • Anacardium nuts
  • Filberts
  • Nut meats
  • Queensland nuts

Examples of foods and products that contain or often contain tree nuts

  • Baked goods
  • Calisson
  • Dishes such as almond chicken, pad thai, satay, chili and trout amandine
  • Gianduja and giandula
  • Tree nut oils
  • Pralines
  • Snack foods, e.g., trail mix

Non-food sources of tree nuts

  • Bean bags, kick sacks/hacky sacks
  • Bird seed
  • Cosmetics, hair care products, sun screens
  • Massage oils
  • Pet food

Should I Avoid Coconut And Nutmeg If I Have A Tree Nut Allergy

Coconut and nutmeg are not considered tree nuts for the purposes of food allergen labelling in Canada and are not usually restricted from the diet of someone allergic to tree nuts. A coconut is a seed of a fruit and nutmeg is obtained from the seeds of a tropical tree. However, some people allergic to tree nuts have also reacted to coconut and nutmeg. Consult your allergist before trying coconut- or nutmeg-containing products.

I have a ten year old son who has a peanut allergy as well as some environmental allergies and asthma. He was diagnosed when he was two and had an anaphylactic reaction to a peanut butter cup that he had had a bite of. He has only had one reaction as we are very careful with the foods he consumes. He is not allergic to tree nuts or seeds. We avoid all peanuts, all tree nuts and all products that “may contain”. He has had sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds. I am wondering if anyone knows if pine nuts are a nut or a seed? And are pine nuts related to peanuts? Please let me know if anyone has information on this.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Tree Nut Allergy

If youre allergic to tree nuts and exposed to them, you may develop symptoms of an allergic reaction. In some cases, these symptoms will appear within minutes and be severe. In other cases, it may take 30 minutes to a few hours before symptoms begin.

Symptoms of a tree nut allergy may include:

  • abdominal pain, including cramping and upset stomach
  • itching of the mouth, throat, skin, eyes, hands, or other body regions
  • shortness of breath and difficulty breathing
  • anaphylaxis

The Government of Canada is committed to providing Canadians with the information they need to make safe and healthy food choices. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada work closely with municipal, provincial and territorial partners and industry to meet this goal.

The CFIA enforces Canada’s labelling laws and works with associations, distributors, food manufacturers and importers to ensure complete and appropriate labelling of all foods. The CFIA recommends that food companies establish effective allergen controls to prevent the occurrence of undeclared allergens and cross-contamination. The CFIA has developed guidelines and tools to aid them in developing these controls. When the CFIA becomes aware of a potential hazard associated with a food, such as undeclared allergens, Health Canada is asked to assess the situation. When a serious risk is identified, the food product is recalled from the marketplace and a public warning is issued. The CFIA has also published several advisories to industry and consumers regarding allergens in food.

How Are Severe Allergic Reactions Treated

Currently there is no cure for food allergies. The only option for managing the risk is to completely avoid the specific allergen. Appropriate emergency treatment for anaphylaxis includes an injection of epinephrine, which is available in an auto-injector device. Epinephrine is the only medication that can stop an allergic reaction from progressing and must be administered as soon as symptoms of a severe allergic reaction appear. Antihistamines, if used, should be given AFTER epinephrine has been administered. The injection must be followed by further treatment and observation in a hospital emergency room. If your allergist has diagnosed you with a food allergy and prescribed epinephrine, carry it with you all the time and know how to use it. Follow the advice of your allergist on how to use an auto-injector device.

How to Toast Pine Nuts –

To help reduce contact with nut allergens and the possibility of reactions in someone with a peanut or tree nut allergy:

  • If you keep peanuts and nuts in your home, watch for cross-contamination that can happen with utensils and cookware. For example, make sure the knife you use to make peanut butter sandwiches is not used in preparing food for a child with a nut allergy, and that nut breads are not toasted in the same toaster as other breads.
  • Don’t serve cooked foods you didn’t make yourself, or anything with an unknown list of ingredients.
  • Tell everyone who handles the food your child eats, from waiters and waitresses to the cafeteria staff at school, about the allergy. If the manager or owner of a restaurant is uncomfortable about your request for peanut- or nut-free food preparation, don’t eat there.
  • Consider making your child’s school lunches, as well as snacks and treats to take to parties, play dates, sleepovers, school events, and other outings.
  • Work with the childcare supervisor or school principal to make sure the food allergy emergency action plan provided by your allergist is followed correctly.
  • Keep epinephrine accessible at all times not in the glove compartment of your car, but with you. Seconds count during an anaphylaxis episode.

A little preparation and prevention can help make sure that your child’s allergy doesn’t get in the way of a happy, healthy everyday life.

Developing A Sudden Nut Allergy

Most people develop allergies as children. If you have a nut allergy as a child, you may even grow out of it.

However, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the Mayo Clinic, it’s also possible to develop a food allergy as an adult. The sudden onset of food allergies in adults can occur even when a person has been eating that food for their entire lives. Once you become allergic to something as an adult, it’s likely to always cause you issues.

That being said, adult food allergies are rare. Harvard Health Publishing says that only 4 percent of adults are allergic to food products.

  • Itchy mouth, throat, eyes or skin.

  • Anaphylaxis. This is the most dangerous symptom

    it can be life-threatening and has the potential to send the body into shock.
