Can You Take Allergy Medicine With Sertraline

How Long It Takes To Work

What To Avoid When Taking Sertraline, Fluoxetine, Paroxetine, Escitalopram (SSRIs)

It takes around a week for sertraline levels to build up in your body. It takes a few more weeks for your body to get used to sertraline.

Do not stop taking sertraline after a week or 2 because you feel it is not helping.

Usually it takes between 4 to 6 weeks to feel the full effect.

You might feel worse during the first few weeks of treatment before you begin to feel better.

Talk to your GP if you do not feel any better after 6 weeks.

What Other Drugs Could Interact With This Medication

There may be an interaction between rupatadine and any of the following:

  • amiodarone
  • “statin” anti-cholesterol medications

If you are taking any of these medications, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. Depending on your specific circumstances, your doctor may want you to:

  • stop taking one of the medications,
  • change one of the medications to another,
  • change how you are taking one or both of the medications, or
  • leave everything as is.

An interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Speak to your doctor about how any drug interactions are being managed or should be managed.

Medications other than those listed above may interact with this medication. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter , and herbal medications you are taking. Also tell them about any supplements you take. Since caffeine, alcohol, the nicotine from cigarettes, or street drugs can affect the action of many medications, you should let your prescriber know if you use them.

Sertraline should come with a Medication Guide. Follow the instructions carefully. Ask your doctor if you have any questions.

The tablets may be taken with or without food.

If you are taking the oral liquid, use the dropper provided to measure your dose and mix it with 1/2 cup of water, ginger ale, lemon-lime soda, lemonade, or orange juice. Do not mix sertraline with any other liquid. Drink it right away after mixing. Do not mix the medicine with the liquid until you are ready to take your dose. It is okay if the mixture looks hazy.

Dosage For Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

Adult dosage

A doctor will typically prescribe sertraline in two ways:

  • Continuous: The typical starting dose is 50 mg per day throughout your menstrual cycle. The dose may increase in the next cycles up to a maximum of 150 mg/day as needed.
  • Luteal: The typical starting dose is 50 mg daily in the first two weeks before and up to the start of your anticipated period. Each cycle the dose may increase a bit up to a maximum of 100 mg/day.

Child dosage

The use of this drug to treat children with this condition has not been studied. It should not be used by people younger than 18 years.

Senior dosage

The kidneys of older adults may not work as well as they used to. This can cause your body to process drugs more slowly. As a result, more of a drug stays in your body for a longer time. This raises your risk for side effects. Your doctor may start you on a lowered dose or a different dosing schedule. This can help keep levels of this drug from building up too much in your body.

How To Take It

You can take cetirizine with or without food, but always take the tablets or capsules with a drink of water, milk or squash. Swallow them whole. Do not chew them.

Other Considerations When Taking Cold Meds

Another consideration: Some meds contain added colors and flavorings. Make sure to mention all your allergies to your pharmacist when picking over-the-counter cold and flu medication, says Dr. Manukyan.

Also, its probably best to avoid drinking alcohol when taking any cold or flu medications. Alcohol can increase the effect of ingredients like dextromethorphan, and it can compound the sedative effect of antihistamines. Plus, many cold meds contain acetaminophen which could potentially lead to liver damage if mixed with alcohol.

The overall advice I would give before taking medication for colds or flu is to balance the benefits against the risks, Dr. Cutler says. Doing so may make moms chicken soup seem like the best medicine of all.
