What Happens During The Apt
- First, we will use a special tape to place a prepared panel of food extracts on your back.
- You will be required to keep this panel dry, and in place on your back, for 48 to 72 hours.
- We will schedule a return appointment in our clinic so your allergist can remove the panel and obtain the test results.
Important Things To Consider
The allergy testing must be done by a board-certified allergist because the results of the testing may be influenced by the skill level of the practitioner. What Is It Used For
Food allergy testing is used to find out if you or your child has an allergy to a specific food. It may also be used to find out whether you have a true allergy or, instead, a sensitivity to a food.
Food sensitivity, also called food intolerance, is often confused with a food allergy. The two conditions can have similar symptoms, but complications can be very different.
A food allergy is an immune system reaction that can affect organs throughout the body. It can cause dangerous health conditions. Food sensitivity is usually much less serious. If you have a food sensitivity, your body can’t properly digest a certain food, or a food bothers your digestive system. Symptoms of food sensitivity are mostly limited to digestive problems such as abdominal pain, nausea, gas, and diarrhea.
Common food sensitivities include:
- Lactose, a type of sugar found in dairy products. It may be confused with a milk allergy.
- MSG, an additive found in many foods
- Gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and other grains. It is sometimes confused with a wheat allergy. Gluten sensitivity and wheat allergies are also different from celiac disease. In celiac disease, your immune system damages your small intestine when you eat gluten. Some of the digestive symptoms can be similar, but celiac disease is not a food sensitivity or a food allergy.
Allergy Testing & Treatment
The gold standard for diagnosing allergies involves either skin prick testing or patch testing. Skin prick testing and patch testing are similar in that the tester applies allergens to the skin and then measures the patients reaction to determine allergic reaction. Skin prick and patch testing are the least expensive and easiest methods for diagnosing allergies in most people. Immediate results are available after testing is complete. There are also blood tests to diagnose allergies. These are ideal for people who are not able to do skin tests. However, blood tests cost more than skin prick and patch tests and are less sensitive. This means that it is possible for a skin prick or patch test to produce a positive result and a blood test to produce a negative result from the same patient. Unlike skin prick and patch testing, a patient may have to wait seven days or more to receive the results from a blood test.5

How Much Does Allergy Testing Cost
If you dont have health insurance, you should be prepared to pay anywhere between $160 and $330 just for a consultation with an allergist. Depending on which route you choose, you have to plan on spending another $220 to $1,100 for a blood test known as a RAST test, or $70 to $350 for the commonly used skin prick test.

How To Test For Food Intolerance
To understand what foods could be problematic for you, you can either try an elimination diet or take food intolerance test, and then monitor your symptoms.
1. Try an elimination diet. This involves removing reactive food from your diet and monitoring your symptoms for up to eight weeks. Foods are then reintroduced one-by-one to see if your symptoms return. For guidance on conducting an elimination diet, you may wish to speak to a Registered Nutritional Therapist
2. Take a food sensitivity test. Confusingly, these are often referred to as food intolerance tests, even though they actually test for food sensitivities. For ease, well use these terms interchangeably in this article. This sort of test looks at your blood chemistry to see which IgG proteins are present, providing insight into how your body is responding to certain foods. A food intolerance test takes some of the guesswork out of an elimination diet, but your results still need to be considered in light of your overall health.
But, remember: food reactions have similar symptoms to other gut-associated conditions, which makes it tricky to pinpoint the exact cause.
Many times, if youre reacting to several foods, its not actually a specific food sensitivity thats at the root of your problems. There are many online home test kits and food intolerance labs, and its hard to work out which are reliable.
Individual labs vary in their testing methodologies, and some have poor reproducibility, which means if the same test were conducted twice, different results could be found.

How To Test For Food Intolerance In Children
According to NICE, food allergies are on the rise. But in 20% of cases, people avoid certain foods without getting a confirmed diagnosis because theyve heard they can be problematic.8
Children and babies are most at risk of food allergies and food sensitivities because their immune and digestive systems are still developing. Its likely this is due to a combination of both genetic and environmental factors. Increased caesarean birth rates, lack of early-age exposure to germs and declining breastfeeding rates may also play a role.9

Dont Allergists Use A Blood Test To Investigate Food Allergy
Yes, but a different test is ordered: food-specific IgE levels, not IgG or IgG4. Even with food-specific IgE measurements, large screening panels are not recommended. Making the diagnosis of a specific food allergy may include the following: a full medical history, physical examination, skin prick testing, carefully selected food-specific IgE levels and oral food challenges to suspected food allergens in some instances.1
Allergy Patch Test Or Epicutaneous Test
To diagnose allergies using an Allergy Patch Test, a doctor or nurse places some patches with different substances on the skin of the back. The test determines what allergen may be causing contact dermatitis. The doctor or nurse removes the patches after 48 hours, but the final reading is performed after 72-96 hours. If you are sensitized to the substance, you should develop a local rash. The number of patches depends on the suspected substances your doctor wants to investigate. Inform your doctor about all the medication you are receiving. Systemic corticosteroids or immunomodulators can change the results of the test. Baths and sweating can move the patches, so be careful.
