Prednisone For Sinus Infection: Does It Work

A sinus infection, commonly known as sinusitis, is when your sinuses get infected, causing them to become swollen or inflamed. These are mainly due to bacterial, fungal, or viral infection, as in the common cold. Sinuses are the hollow parts or cavities within your skull, which are found behind the nose, forehead, and cheeks. These cavities are lined with a protective layer of mucus, meant to fight against external irritants like dust.

When your sinuses get inflamed, this can cause an excessive amount of mucus to build-up within your cavities. In turn, this causes pain and discomfort, making your head feel extremely stuffy and heavy. Sinusitis is quite a common condition in the US, with about 30 million people being diagnosed with it each year. Prednisone is a prescription steroid intended to reduce inflammation within the body. As sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses, does prednisone work in treating it? Lets find out.

How Should Dexamethasone Be Taken

Dexamethasone Tablets are available in 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.5, 2, 4 and 6 mg strengths. The initial dosage for Dexamethasone varies from .75 to 9 mg a day depending on the disease being treated. Infants born to mothers who have received substantial doses of corticosteroids during pregnancy should be carefully observed for signs of hypoadrenalism. Because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants from corticosteroids, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother. Use in pediatric patients is recommended to be done in consultation with a pediatric specialist.

Benefit And Risk Of Use Of Gcs In Pediatric Populations

22 Secrets of People Who Take Prednisone (With images)

Inflammatory diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses in children include upper respiratory tract infections, chronic rhinitis, ARS and CRS. ARS is defined as increase of sinonasal symptoms after 5 days of infection or persistent symptoms after 10 days and characterized by the sudden onset of two or more of the symptoms for less than 12 weeks . Bacterial infection is expected when at least 3 symptoms are present among which discoloured discharge, purulent secretion in nasal cavity, severe local pain with a unilateral predominance, fever, elevated C-reactive protein or erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and double sickening . The definition of pediatric CRS differs from adult CRS by the symptom of cough and is defined by the presence of two or more symptoms, one of which should be either nasal obstruction or nasal discharge with/without facial pain/pressure with/without cough, lasting for at least 12 weeks . The diagnosis is confirmed by either nasal endoscopy showing edema, purulent drainage or nasal polyps in the middle meatus or CT scan showing ostiomeatal complex or sinus opacification. Of note, the presence of nasal polyps is much less common in pediatric patients than in adult patients with CRS .

How Are Steroids Used To Treat Allergies

ANSWER

Steroids, also called corticosteroids, can lower swelling that comes with allergies. They prevent and treat sneezing and stuffy, runny, or itchy nose. They also help with red, itchy eyes. These drugs can be used for allergies, hay fever, and asthma. They come in pills, nose sprays, inhalers, eye drops, or skin creams. Steroids work very well, but must be taken regularly and often when you dont have symptoms. It may take 1-2 weeks for the medication to kick in fully.

High Blood Sugar And Shifting Body Fat

Taking prednisone can cause an increase in fasting blood sugar. This can be especially serious in people with Type 2 diabetes. Patients should make sure they get their blood sugar tested and monitored while taking prednisone. After stopping treatment, blood sugar metabolism usually returns to normal.

Prednisone and other corticosteroids can cause significant weight gain and increase levels of the hormone cortisol. Too much cortisol in the body can cause Cushing syndrome, which redistributes fat within the body. Signs of Cushing syndrome include the distribution of fatty tissue around the midsection, between the shoulder blades and in the face. Children with Cushing syndrome have experienced impaired growth.

Increased cortisol in the body from prednisone and other corticosteroids can cause the adrenal glands that naturally produce cortisol to shut down. Adrenal suppression can lead to adrenal atrophy and adrenal insufficiency.

Symptoms of adrenal insufficiency include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Poor growth and weight gain in children
  • Psychiatric symptoms

What Will Happen If I Use Prednisone For A Long Period

Prednisone can have serious short-term and long-term side effects and must only be taken under a physicians guidance. Long-term use of prednisone can make it difficult for your body to respond to physical stress. You need to tell your doctor that you are using or have used this medication over the past one year before having surgery or emergency treatment.

Apart from making you more prone to infection, prednisone also masks the signs of infection. It may cause vaccines not to work as well.

Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects, especially bone loss/pain, stomach/intestinal bleeding, cataracts, and mental/mood changes.

Prolonged use of prednisone in children may slow growth. If your child is taking this medication, visit the doctor regularly to check their height and growth.

Do I Need To Take Prednisone For My Allergic Reaction To Go Away Or Will It Do That On Its Own

Asked

benadryl, allergic reactions, prednisone, doctor, antibiotics

I have recently discovered I’m allergic to an antibiotic that was prescribed to me. The doctor then prescribed 40mg of Prednisone for one week, and 20mg the following week, along with Benadryl and Pepcid. I have been taking all this medication for three days now and barely see any improvement on the rash and hives on my skin. I have been reading up on the side effects of Prednisone and am wondering if I could just allow my skin to clear naturally with the aid of Benadryl.

franklin8905

I hope your rash has cleared but if it hasn’t I hope you haven’t taken the prednisone. I have had such bad reactions to it that I would never take it again, unless I was dying. 40 mg is a pretty big dosage for a rash?

+0Cmmw85

I’m on 60 mg a day for a rash/ allergic reaction. The doctors aren’t really sure what is going on or how or why my body is having such bad symptoms of rash, burning, inflammation, and pain.

choachieRosemode

Can you describe what your severe is like because i also go on prednisone at various moments but i don’t know if mine is actually excema it started three years ago with bad rashes and itching now i have hives all the time do you get hives along with your excema.

Expected Side Effects Of Prednisone In Dogs And Cats

Every dog and cat on prednisone will develop the same symptoms: theyll drink a ton of water, theyll pee all the time , theyll get extra hungry , they may pant more, and occasionally they will develop weird behavioral symptoms and youll need to stop the pred.

Long term, prednisone has the potential to cause intestinal signs, weakness or fatigue, thin hair coat, and rarely more serious metabolic problems that you should discuss with your veterinarian. Prednisone is not a drug we use willy-nilly, because it does many powerful good and potentially bad things. Used intelligently to treat severe chronic seasonal allergies, though, and with constant veterinary supervision, prednisone has the potential to significantly improve your pets quality of life.
