Im not talking about anaphylaxis or immediate allergic reactions that involve an immune response. Those can be serious and life-threatening. If you have any allergies, you need to steer clear of any traces of foods you are allergic to, and speak with your doctor or pharmacist about emergency medication, if necessary.
What Im talking about, is an intolerance, meaning you do not tolerate a specific food very well and it causes immediate or chronic symptoms anywhere in the body. Symptoms can take hours or even days to show themselves. And symptoms can be located just about anywhere in the body.
This is what makes them so tricky to identify.
Symptoms of food intolerances
There are some common food intolerances that have immediate and terribly painful gastrointestinal symptoms, such as lactose intolerance or celiac disease. These can cause stomach pain, gas, bloating, and/or diarrhea symptoms can start immediately after eating lactose or gluten.
On the other hand, other more insidious symptoms may not be linked to foods in an obvious way.
Chronic muscle or joint pain
Sweating, or increased heart rate or blood pressure
Headaches or migraines
Exhaustion after a good nights sleep
Autoimmune conditions like Hashimotos or rheumatoid arthritis
Rashes or eczema
Inability to concentrate or feeling like your brain is foggy

Treating Food Allergy Or Intolerance
The easiest way to treat a food allergy or intolerance is to eliminate the offending food/s from the diet. Sometimes, the body can tolerate the food if it is avoided for a time, then reintroduced in small doses, particularly for food intolerances. Before you eliminate or reintroduce foods, seek advice from a specialist doctor and dietitian.
What Tests Diagnose Food Allergies
Generally a food allergy is identified by signs and symptoms. Medical professionals are trained to recognize hives, swelling patterns, rashes, and other symptoms associated with allergic reactions.
The person will be asked questions about their medical history and possible triggers of the reaction.
Blood tests and other tests are needed only under very unusual circumstances, such as anaphylaxis.
Some people can pinpoint which food caused the allergic reaction, especially if the reaction occurs within minutes of consuming a particular food. Many others will need to see an allergist for special testing to determine the exact food that is responsible.

Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening form of IgE-mediated food allergy that requires prescription of self-injectable adrenaline. This can lead to constricted airways in the lungs, severe lowering of blood pressure and shock , and suffocation by swelling of the throat.

- soymilk formula studies have shown that using soymilk formula does not prevent the development of allergies in children
- partially hydrolysed cows milk-based formula is not recommended to prevent the development of food allergy.
How To Reintroduce Foods Youve Been Allergic To After A Fast

If you have been diagnosed with a food allergy, the simplest and most effective way to prevent a reaction is to avoid the foods that cause problems. Food allergens can often be hidden in the foods you buy, making it all the more important to remain vigilant.
In some cases, medications may be needed to treat acute allergy symptoms. Mild to moderate food allergies often respond to over-the-counter antihistamines. In one study, almost half of participants achieved better protection from the allergen compared with only 12% in the placebo group

Scientists are working with existing biologic drugs to see if they have a role to play in combating food allergies. They target specific parts of immune pathway, says Dr. Stukus. They show great promise in preventing symptoms from happening but theyre not a cure.
Researchers are looking at biologics now used for other conditions such as omalizumab , dupilumab , reslizumab , mepolizumab . According to an article in Current Opinion in Allergy and Clinical Immunology, omalizumab has been studied the most in relation to food allergies.
There are also trials looking at combinations of biologics pus oral immunotherapy
One inhibiting factor? Shots can cost $1,000 each and have to be repeated every couple of weeks, says Dr. Stukus.
These treatments, existing or promised, wont be for everybody, he adds, and some people will continue to rely on avoidance. Its OK for people not to choose one, Dr. Stukus says.
The Best Ways To Treat An Allergic Reaction To Food
The best way to avoid an allergic reaction is to avoid the food you are allergic to. Sound simple? Its anything but. For one, you can have an allergic reaction to a food the first time you eat it. And it can be incredibly hard to identify an allergen in food mixtures or when ordering at a restaurant.
That said, strict avoidance of specific foods is the current standard of care, and people can do well with the right education and understanding, says Dr. Stukus. That means being really careful about ingredients, inspecting food labels and taking extra care when dining out .
Everyone with a food allergy should also have an epinephrine autoinjector , sold under brands such as EpiPen and Auvi-Q, which contain a drug to stop the airways from swelling and shutting off, says the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Where To Find Therapeutic Grade Probiotics
I only recommend one brand of probiotics that is therapeutic grade and in my opinion, the best probiotic on the market: Smidge Probiotic .
There are other brands of therapeutic grade probiotics out there but I don’t recommend them. For example, the one I referenced above in Jenny McCarthy’s book did work for me in the past, but I no longer recommend because they started adding canola oil to it.
