Diagnosing Flea Allergy Dermatitis In Cats
Surprisingly, we dont often diagnose FAD by finding fleas. This is because cats are really good at finding and removing fleas from their body. Also, cats do not need to be infested with fleas to have this reaction. A bite from just one flea can cause FAD.
To diagnose FAD, we start by looking for fleas, or evidence of fleas, called flea dirt. Flea dirt is actually flea poop, and it looks like black bits of dirt. It turns reddish brown when put on wet paper, as it contains digested blood. Intradermal allergy testing can also identify flea allergy, although this is more commonly done by a veterinary dermatologist.
Other causes of skin diseases in pets that must be ruled out include atopic dermatitis, food allergy dermatitis, sarcoptic or demodectic mange, other skin parasites, and bacterial folliculitis.
In many cases, we diagnose FAD by a response to treatment. If their symptoms resolve after treating your pet and the environment for fleas, it is most likely that FAD was the cause of the skin issues.
Treating Flea Allergy Dermatitis In Cats
The best way to treat FAD is to control fleas. We do this with flea prevention. All of these medications kill adult fleas, while some will also kill the flea eggs and larvae that are in the environment.
Adult fleas make up only about 5% of the total flea population. Most fleas are in the environment as flea eggs, larvae, and pupae. Therefore, it can be helpful to treat the environment as well as your cat. There are many different environmental flea control products, but make sure you consult with your veterinarian to find a product that is both safe for humans and pets.
Many cats with FAD get secondary skin infections. These need to be diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian. Skin infections are often treated with oral antibiotics and topical treatments such as shampoos, sprays, or creams.

Many dogs and cats can harbor ectoparasites such as mites, lice, and fleas and are not bothered by their presence unless parasitic numbers are causing mechanical irritation. However, if the animal has a parasite hypersensitivity, pruritus can be moderate to severe causing alopecia and excoriations, which can lead to the development of secondary skin infections.

The prevalence of flea allergy dermatitis depends on geographic location and ranges from one of the most commonly diagnosed allergic dermatoses seen in both dogs and cats or not occurring at all in areas that do not have fleas.1 Commonly pets with FAD will have concurrent atopic dermatitis and/or cutaneous adverse food reaction .
Preventing Flea Allergy Dermatitis
You can prevent flea allergy dermatitis by keeping fleas off your cat. Use a flea product throughout the flea season, beginning use one month before the start of the flea season and continuing use for one month after the flea season. Remove fleas, eggs and larvae from your cats environment by vacuuming and cleaning carpets regularly. Keep upholstery and curtains clean as well, since fleas can lay their eggs inthese locations.

Outlook And Ongoing Care
Fortunately, with treatment your cat is likely to live a normal, happy life. Their treatment for FAD will need to be ongoing, but this is likely to be as simple as strict flea control and keeping an eye out for flare-ups. If your cat has a flare-up, contact your vet straight away, before it has a chance to get any worse.
How To Treat Fad In Your Pet
If you do suspect your dog or cat has flea allergy dermatitis, take them to your vet they will look for evidence of fleas and may perform a flea elimination trial, skin tests or blood tests.
Bites from just one flea can be enough to trigger intense itching in a pet with FAD, and your vet may diagnose FAD even if fleas or flea dirt arent visible.
Minimising the number of flea bites is the most important part of managing FAD. You can control fleas year round with an effective, fast-acting product like Advocate®, Seresto®, Advantix® * or Advantage®, thanks to imidacloprid the super active ingredient, which kills fleas on contact. This means that fleas dont need to bite your pet and cause further irritation before the treatment takes effect.3Once fleas come into contact with your pet, they are affected within 3-5 minutes. How Long Does It Take For A Dog To Stop Itching After Flea Treatment
It’s fairly typical after you’ve applied Itch Flea for there to be a period of hyperactivity amongst the fleas as the product takes effect, and this can cause an increase in itching. It should settle down though after 24 hours. If after 24 hours your pet still continues to scratch, there could be other things going on.
Treatment Of Flea Allergy Dermatitis
Your veterinarian can help you determine the best way to treat your dog if hes having an allergic reaction to fleas.
Some possible forms of treatment include the following:
- Cytopoint: an anti-itch injection that lasts four to eight weeks
- Apoquel: an immune-modulating pill that helps with both itch and inflammation
- Cyclosporine : an immune-modulating pill that targets inflammation
There are some over-the-counter medications you can use, like antihistamines, but these wont be as effective as prescriptions and you should ideally use them under the guidance of your veterinarian.
If you choose to give your dog an antihistamine, make sure it doesnt contain decongestants or alcohol, which can be dangerous for him.
