- Allergy shots can worsen allergy symptoms at first when the injection regimen starts.

- Please wait 30 minutes after all allergy shots.
- Be sure to notify staff if you experienced any problems with your most recent allergy shot, such as swelling, bothersome itching, or any problems with breathing or lightheadedness. This may require a dose adjustment.
- If you are have been asked to do so, please carry your epinephrine injection device and/or albuterol inhaler to and from allergy shot visits. Generally, anyone with asthma, as well as certain other higher risk patients, should do this.
- If you are experiencing increased asthma symptoms, then please hold off on your allergy shot or discuss with staff first
Why can’t I do allergy shots at home?
Allergy shots should always be given in a supervised medical setting. If you live out of town or our clinic is not a convenient location, then we are happy to work with you and your primary care provider to try to arrange your allergy shot injections at your primary care clinic instead.
Although giving an allergy shot is fairly straightforward, allergy shots can cause a systemic allergic reaction and a properly equipped medical team is important in those instances.
How Long Does It Take Immunotherapy To Calm My Allergies
Allergy shots are best when viewed as preventative, not reactive. Unlike a penicillin shot that is a response to an infection, immunotherapy seeks to slowly build up tolerance and immunity to an allergen. How effective they are immediately is variable by the patient. These shots arent meant to be delivered as instant allergy fixes.

Changes In Your Health
If at any time during the course of your immunotherapy you develop a new medical condition, you become pregnant, or you start a new medication, please tell the nurse. In particular, high blood pressure or heart medications and certain antidepressants cannot be taken with allergy shots. You should not get your allergy shot if you are have a fever, rash, asthma symptoms, or increased allergy symptoms.
Benefits Of Allergy Shots
Allergy shots can be effective at reducing allergy symptoms especially for seasonal allergies and allergies to dogs and cats.
For example, a 2016 study published in Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology examined two groups of 65 to 75-year-olds with hay fever triggered by pollen and grass allergies. One group was given allergy shots, while the other received a placebo over the course of three years.
The allergy shot group reported a 55 percent reduction in symptoms of hay fever, like sneezing and itchy eyes, and a reduction of 64 percent in the amount of allergy medication needed for relief.
It can take about six months to a year of allergy shots for someone to notice a change in allergy symptoms, and about two to three years for the treatment to reach its full effect.
For some people, it offers significant improvement, and for others, it provides partial improvement or at least lets them decrease their medications and feel more comfortable in general, says Omid Mehdizadeh, MD, otolaryngologist and laryngologist at Providence Saint Johns Health Center.
Overall, immunotherapy treatment typically spans three to five years, though some people may receive allergy shots for shorter or longer periods of time, depending on how well they respond to the treatment.

What Are Alternative Routes To Allergy Shots
Although allergy shots are the most common form of immunotherapy in the U.S., some other methods of allergen-specific therapy have been investigated and proven effective in controlled studies.
- Nasal immunotherapy: Allergens are sprayed onto the nasal mucosa. This technique is not currently available or FDA-approved, though it appears to be effective. Clinical trials have revealed frequent local side effects.
- Sublingual Oral immunotherapy : Allergens are orally ingested. This technique has proven effective in some studies, and three products are FDA-approved. Oral immunotherapy offers some promise as a future treatment for food allergy as well.
