Best Nasal Spray: Nasacort Aq

Nasacort AQ is a steroid nasal spray, similar to Flonase but with a different active ingredient .

The most important thing to keep in mind when using these sprays, Dr. Kalra says, is that they should be used on a regular basis to be most effective. They don’t work as well when they’re used “as needed.” The recommended dosing for people over 18 is one spray in each nostril twice daily or two sprays in each nostril once daily.

The technique you use is incredibly important to help cut down on irritation and up the effectiveness, she adds, so be sure to follow the instructions on the package and talk to your doctor if you’re unsure of how to use the spray.

These meds aren’t right for everyone, so talk to your doctor before starting them.

Pick The Right Medicine For The Job

There are different types of OTC allergy medicines available, from eye drops to pills to nasal sprays, so choosing the right one for the job can help ease your symptoms more effectively.

Dr. Kalra notes that the first go-to for the usual allergy offenders like nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing and post-nasal drip should be an intranasal corticosteroid, such as Flonase, Nasacort or Rhinocort. However, for persistent itchy/watery eyes, an OTC eye drop will probably be most helpful.

Treats Inflammation And Swelling

Boiron Chestal Cold And Cough Syrup

Corticosteroids can reduce inflammation that is associated with allergies. These medications primarily treat and prevent nasal stuffiness, sneezing, and an itchy, runny nose caused by allergic reactions. They work quickly and limit the bodys histamine creation preventing the allergic response that leads to problematic symptoms like a stuffy nose or sore throat. Steroids can work well both for seasonal and year-round allergy symptoms.

Steroids are considered highly effective at relieving allergy symptoms, but they must be taken regularly, even when no symptoms are experienced, to work well. Like many allergy medication types, it can take several weeks before the full relief from the medicine is felt.

Systemic steroids are available as pills or liquids for serious allergies and asthma, but are also common as nasal sprays or inhalers. They can also be used as a topical cream for skin allergies to relieve hives and swelling. Many doctors recommend nasal steroid sprays to help with year-round allergies. Corticosteroid medications can take longer to kick in than antihistamines, but most healthcare providers consider them to be the most effective way to combat nasal allergies. Many, but not all, of these steroid treatments require a prescription.

Overview :

An allergic cough is simply a cough that will not go away. It can be triggered by quite a few things and at different times of the year. There are also different types of allergies that are directly responsible for an allergic cough.

When the respiratory system is irritated by an allergen or a virus, fluids and mucus coat the lungs and the airways. In an attempt to remove these fluids, a person coughs. This is a natural way the body protects itself from allergens. A cough is usually always a symptom of some other illness and that problem has to be identified before you can address the coughing. There are many different reasons why a person can suffer with an allergic cough.

Having problems with excessive coughing during the spring or summer months, can be a clear sign of seasonal allergies. Pollen allergy, rhinitis and hay fever are all examples of different allergies associated with the changing seasons. People can have reactions to pollen in the air, ragweed and even to freshly mowed grass. The symptoms of seasonal allergies can be reduced by taking an antihistamine to lessen the severity of the allergic reaction. Smoking can cause an allergic cough and over time it may become worse. Most people who have smoked cigarettes consistently for a number of years have what is called a smokers cough. This too is the bodys attempt to remove fluids brought on by irritation from the smoke.

Best Cold Medicines For A Stuffy Nose

What over-the-counter medicine works best at kicking the cough of the common cold and bronchitis?

Topical nasal sprays offer quick relief but may cause rebound congestion with overuse. People should restrict using decongestants to a maximum of 3 consecutive days.

Oral decongestants, including pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine, are effective for the short-term relief of nasal congestion. However, some people may experience side effects from decongestants, such as insomnia or increases in heart rate or blood pressure.

Some cold medicines contain other ingredients, such as antihistamines. People typically use antihistamines for allergies, but because they can cause drowsiness, manufacturers also add them to nighttime cold and flu formulations. This can help people if they have difficulty getting to sleep.

Adding an antihistamine to a decongestant does not guarantee that a person will fall asleep. Also, people should stop using decongestants at nighttime if they find that they cause insomnia.

Doctors do not recommend medicines that suppress a cough for people with a wet cough.

People with a wet cough may take guaifenesin. This is an expectorant that manufacturers claim can help loosen mucus and phlegm.

People with a dry cough, which is a cough that does not produce mucus, may take a cough suppressant. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant present in many cold and flu medicines. It acts on parts of the brain to stop a person from coughing.

Sometimes, manufacturers add dextromethorphan to combination cold and flu products, such as all-in-one medicines.

Steer Clear Of Sedating Meds

Dr. Kalra explains that there are two main types of oral antihistamines used to control allergies: first- and second-generation H1 antagonists, which work to block histamine when it’s released in your body. Histamine is what causes typically allergy symptoms such as itching, sneezing and runny nose, so blocking it can help reduce those symptoms.

Even though all antihistamines work the same way, there are differences between first- and second-generation meds. First-generation antihistamines, such as Benadryl, are sedating medications . Because of their side effects, Dr. Kalra recommends avoiding regular use of any first-generation medications. Instead, choose second-generation meds like Zyrtec, Allegra, Claritin and Xyzal, which can be taken every day.

What Should I Know About Otc Products Relieve Allergies And Treat A Cough

To use OTC products safely, it is important to understand their side effects, their effects on other underlying medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, asthma, and other conditions, their interactions with other prescribed medications such as antidepressants, blood thinners, and high blood pressure medicines, and the product’s limitations.

These guidelines are provided to help consumers make more informed choices when selecting OTC products.

  • Always read the labels and know the ingredients in the products. Never take more than the recommended dose without checking with your doctor first.
  • Do not use aspirin-containing medicines for children and teenagers with influenza, chickenpox, or other viral illnesses. Rare cases of Reye’s syndrome have been associated with the use of aspirin in this population. Reye’s syndrome is a serious illness characterized by liver damage, vomiting, and sometimes coma. It has a 50% mortality rate, and those who survive can be left with permanent brain damage. Therefore, acetaminophen-containing products or NSAIDs are recommended for children with fever. NSAIDs may be used in children over 6 months of age.
  • Aspirin and NSAIDs can cause ulcers and increase the risk of bleeding and should be avoided by people with known ulcer disease or certain blood diseases. People who are scheduled for elective surgeries should inform their doctors that they are taking aspirin or NSAIDs.

The common cold is often mistaken for the flu. The flu is caused by the influenza virus, classified as type A, B, or C. Types A and B affect humans, with type A generating more severe symptoms. The influenza virus can be dangerous in older people and in those patients who are immunocompromised. Nevertheless, people with influenza are sicker than those experiencing common cold symptoms and commonly manifest such signs and symptoms as temperatures greater than 102°F, chills, headaches, myalgia, and malaise .3

The common cold is the leading cause of missed work and school days during the winter months. There is no known cure. Many patients seek out nonprescription medications for symptom relief, leading to expenditures in excess of $8 billion annually on cough and cold products.4

    What Are Allergy Medications

Allergy medications are medicines that are used to treat people with allergies. There are different varieties, especially the ones intended for children. OTC or over-the-counter prescriptions and prescription medications are regulated by the United States FDA . Choosing the right one for your toddler is important.

The most common allergy medication is antihistamines. These are the first medications used to treat allergic reactions or allergies. Antihistamines are also the most established among allergy medications. When a child develops an allergy, his/her body releases histamine, a chemical that makes the eyes itchy and the nose stuffy. What an antihistamine does is stop the effect of histamines in the tissues. These medications are available over-the-counter and are usually recommended for mild allergies. Moreover, giving your toddler an antihistamine can help relieve them of all the itchiness that comes with hives, eczema, and hay fever.

There are also antihistamine nasal sprays for toddlers who may have a difficult time swallowing tablets, or those who dislike taking liquid medication.

A common reaction of antihistamines is drowsiness. Nowadays, however, there are OTC antihistamines that come with a no-drowse formula.

The most common antihistamines, which can be some of the best OTC allergy medicine, are Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra, and Benadryl.

Cortisones are typically given once a day, with some patients using the sprays for extended periods.

How To Relieve Your Allergy Symptoms

If youre convinced your cough is a result of allergies, start by making a few changes to decrease your exposure to potentially irritating substances: Keep your windows closed, shower as soon as you come inside after being outdoors, brush your pets after walks, or invest in an air purifier for your home.

OTC medications are also a great starting point, Dr. Bassett says. Oral antihistamines, like Claritin and Allegra, help block the histamines that set off symptoms in the first place. Nasal steroid sprays, like Flonase, can help clear a stuffy nose if youre dealing with that, too.

But the right treatment depends largely on the cause for a cough, Dr. Bassett says. If you dont see any improvement after taking these steps, reach out to an allergist, who can give you a proper diagnosis, help you identify your triggers, and potentially recommend prescription allergy meds or allergy shots.

What Should I Know About Topical Sprays Decongestants And Expectorants To Treat A Cough

    • Topical nasal decongestants act more quickly than oral nasal decongestants. However, the effects of topical nasal decongestants are short lived. Topical nasal decongestants should be used for only three to five days at a time since more prolonged use can lead to rebound congestion with worsening nasal congestion. Patients with rebound congestion complain of stuffy nose despite frequent applications of the nasal decongestant. Treatment of rebound congestion involves the slow withdrawal of the nasal decongestant and applying saline nose sprays or drops to provide moisture.
    • Nasal decongestants can aggravate high blood pressure and should not be used in people with uncontrolled high blood pressure without permission from the doctor.
    • Oral nasal decongestants can interfere with the action of a class of antidepressants called MAO inhibitors.
    • Oral nasal decongestants can affect diseases such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, and coronary artery disease. Oral nasal decongestants and antihistamines can also precipitate urinary obstruction in patients with enlarged prostates . Patients with these conditions should consult their doctors before using OTC products.

Seasonal Allergies: Which Medication is Right for You?

The best choice of allergy medication is one which relieves symptoms without interfering with everyday tasks. Many allergy sufferers are finding that the newer, non-sedating antihistamines meet both these important parameters. It’s also important to find an allergy medication that can safely be used for the long term, since for many, allergies last an entire season if not the entire year. And finally, allergy medications should minimally react with other medications.
