Does Tylenol Help With Seasonal Allergies

What Is The Most Important Information I Should Know About Acetaminophen And Diphenhydramine

Does wearing a mask help prevent seasonal allergies?

Use this medicine exactly as directed. An overdose of acetaminophen can damage your liver or cause death. Taking too much diphenhydramine can lead to serious heart problems, seizures, coma, or death.

Do not use this medicine to make a child sleepy. This medicine is not for use in anyone younger than 12 years old.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine that may contain acetaminophen or diphenhydramine. Taking too much of either medicine can lead to a fatal overdose.

Drinking alcohol may increase your risk of liver damage while taking acetaminophen.

Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor right away if you have skin redness or a rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling.

Can Benadryl Be Crushed

Benadryl tablets can be crushed. If you have trouble swallowing whole tablets, Benadryl liquid solution and chewable tablets are available.

Benadryl is an antihistamine. If you have allergies or have a cold, your body releases a chemical messenger called histamine. This messenger causes symptoms such as inflammation, edema , itchiness, and runny nose.

Benadryl blocks some of the effects of histamine and decreases some of the symptoms caused by it.

No : Consider Allergies

If the cough is persistent and does not go away after two weeks, its time to start thinking about other factors, which could include allergies, especially if symptoms include not only post-nasal drip, but itchy eyes, ears and throat.

At this point, we might try an antihistamine to see if it would dry up some secretions, Dr. Cameron says. Claritin and Zyrtec are dosed down for children as young as 6 months, but I dont like to give either to really young kids unless I am treating an allergic reaction. Or if its older kids, I want to know that I am treating allergic rhinitis, which can be seasonal allergies or environmental allergens.

A cough caused by allergies may be seasonal and usually there is no fever or body aches and its not contagious. And, it may only occur around the allergic trigger, like cats or tree pollen, says Jason Catanzaro, MD, a pediatric allergist and immunologist. But, very young children are less likely to have outdoor allergiesthey havent been around long enough to be exposed to pollens from grasses, trees and weeds, he explains.

When To See A Doctor

You should see a doctor if you feel that you have a cold and it isnt improving after three to four days. Or, you have an underlying medical condition that puts you more at risk of experiencing complications with a cold, such as:

Furthermore, you should see a doctor if you feel as though you initially were getting better but then experienced worsening symptoms as you could be developing a secondary bacterial infection, pneumonia, or bacterial sinus infection.

Most allergies are controlled through over-the-counter medication. However, if you find that these medications arent effective, visit your doctor to determine exactly what youre allergic to and learn new strategies to better manage your allergies.

Determining whether you have a cold or are suffering from allergies can be difficult in some cases. However, if you consider the numerous ways to differentiate the two, you can receive the best possible treatment and get back to feeling like yourself again.

Aid For Your Airway Allergy

Again, due to the potential danger of airway allergies, the only over-the-counter agent that is available to you is the oral antihistamine. Another non-prescription medication that could be useful is the Asthmanephrin inhaler. This racemic epinephrine spray can temporarily open a constricted, “tight” airway.

I cannot emphasize strongly enough that, if you have airway allergies often synonymous with asthma, your doctor or allergist should frame a program for you to follow. Use of over-the-counter medications for these disorders is ill-advised and dangerous.

Can Seasonal Allergies Cause Back And Joint Pain

If youre wondering whether seasonal allergies can cause back and joint pain, youre not alone. There are plenty of ways seasonal allergies are related to back pain and joint pain as well.

For starters, it is possible to experience joint pain with a cold. Because both allergies and a cold cause similar symptoms, such as a runny nose and sneezing, itchy eyes and throat, and stuffy nose, some people confuse a cold with allergies.

Colds are typically accompanied by a sore throat and coughing, and maybe even a fever and body aches in your neck. However, some people who suffer from inflammation because of their allergies experience joint pain as the body attempts to flush out the allergen.

Another potential link is that allergies can lead to fatigue, which can also make sore joints feel worse. Changes in weather can also lead to joint pain. This is especially true for cold and damp climates and weather-related changes that coincide with seasonal allergies.

Muscle and joint pain can be a coexisting problem resulting from arthritis, Lyme disease and certain immune disorders. It can also be linked to bursitis and osteoporosis. There are other potential causes as well.

If you experience sneezing and coughing as a result of your allergies, you may suffer from muscle, joint and neck pain due to the repeated sneezing or coughing. Seasonal allergies can also make you feel tired, which can ultimately make your symptoms worse.

How Vaccination Myths Can Cause Hesitation

Its understandable that hearing about allergic reactions to COVID-19 vaccines can make people slightly uneasy. Dr. Lang believes educating patients on the infrequency of adverse reactions and the truth about common vaccination myths can help put more people at ease.

Many times, patients claim they got sick from a vaccine, when theyre really referring to a natural immune response from the vaccine, he says. Fever, chills and muscle aches can occur within 36 hours of vaccination because a patients immune system is responding appropriately in developing immunity after receiving the vaccine. Its not an allergic reaction.

He adds that delayed reactions due to immune response, as well as fatigue, soreness at the injection site and vasovagal reactions, are not cause for avoiding COVID-19 vaccines. This is especially important to keep in mind if a reaction occurs after the first dose of the two-dose COVID-19 vaccination regimen.

Differentiating A Cold From Allergies

Seasonal Allergies: Fact or Fiction with Dr. Jeff Millstein

A cold is a viral infection that affects your nose and throat, or the upper respiratory system. In order to catch a cold, you must be in contact with someone else who has oneoften times your kids, spouse, or someone else in your home. Common symptoms of a cold that dont usually apply to allergies include:

  • Body aches and chills
  • Fever
  • Sore throat

Allergies, meanwhile, are often associated with the spring and summer, as this is when you are exposed to pollen, grass, and other common allergens . Common symptoms of allergies that dont apply to a cold include:

  • Itchy eyes, nose, and throat
  • Watery eyes
  • Post nasal drip, or excess mucus that forms in the back of the nose and throat

As previously mentioned, you can experience a runny or congested nose with both a cold and allergies as well as a cough due to post nasal drip. Furthermore, a cold can lead you to develop pink eye, an infection or inflammation on the outer membrane of the eye and inner eyelid, which can be confused with the itchy and watery eyes you experience with allergies. In these cases, try to evaluate your other symptoms to help determine whether you have a cold or allergies. Make sure to speak to your doctor if youre still having trouble differentiating the two.

What We Know So Far About Allergic Reactions To Covid

The FDA has issued emergency use authorization for three COVID-19 vaccines. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which has been recommended by the CDC for people age 16 and older, is 95% effective at preventing COVID-19 illness according to clinical trial results. The Moderna vaccine, which has been suggested by the CDC for people age 18 and older, is 94.1% effective.

A third vaccine, produced by Johnson & Johnson via Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies, was just recently approved for an Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA. In clinical trials, this vaccine was shown to be 66% effective in preventing moderate and severe COVID-19 disease 28 days after vaccination. Overall, the vaccine was also 85% effective in preventing hospitalization and 100% effective in preventing death, 28 days after vaccination.

The CDC has since reported that between Dec. 14 and Dec. 23, 2020, there were 21 cases of anaphylaxis after the administration of a reported 1,893,360 first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine . Of these cases, 71% of these occurred within 15 minutes of vaccination.

Even though there is a risk of anaphylaxis, its still very small and the potential benefit from the COVID-19 vaccination clearly exceeds the potential for harm, says Dr. Lang. The situation is evolving, however, and well learn more as we gain more experience with these vaccines.

Managing Allergy Headaches And Triggers

Tylenol Poisoning

The key to managing your allergies and reducing headaches is limiting exposure to allergens and triggers.

  • Stay indoors and keep the windows shut when pollen counts are high.
  • Wear glasses or sunglasses outdoors to keep pollen from getting in your eyes.
  • Use the air conditioning in your home and in your car. Make sure to change out the air filters regularly and keep AC units clean.
  • Use mite-proof covers in your bedroom for pillows, comforters, and mattresses to reduce exposure to dust mites.
  • Keep your homes humidity at 30-50% to reduce exposure to mold. Clean your kitchen, bathrooms, and basement regularly and use a dehumidifier in damp, humid places.
  • Wash floors with a damp mop or rag to avoid dry-sweeping or dusting.
  • If you are allergic to a pet, keep them outside of your home. If a pet must be kept indoors, keep it out of the bedroom so you are not exposed to allergens while you sleep.
  • Replace carpeting with hardwood, tile or linoleum to reduce dander in the home.

Many sinus headache triggers are airborne and difficult to avoid. Discuss your options with your allergist to decide which treatment options are best for you.
