One In 13 Children Have A Food Allergy Here’s How You Can Help Them Have A Safe Halloween

For parents, Halloween can be a very scary time. No, not because of the creepy masks and makeup, or the red Pennywise balloon accessory . We’re talking about food allergies.

The top eight food allergies, according to Mayo Clinic, are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts , fish , shellfish, , soy, and wheat. Luckily, parents can breathe a sigh of relief since we doubt your next-door neighbor is handing out cod. But they could be extending a basket of life-threatening treats to kids with food allergies.

We reached out to Food Allergy Research & Education and other experts to learn more about the popular Teal Pumpkin Project and safe candy options for kiddos with allergies.

What Are The Best Allergy

Of all the frightful things your child might experience this Halloween, an allergic reaction might be the worst. Sadly, many parents of children with food allergies. who havent yet found an effective food allergy treatment will have real concerns. Candy is part of the Halloween tradition, but many parents in Atlanta and throughout Georgia may not be aware of the allergens present in some of the most popular sweet treats.

While children with allergies do need to be cautious, it is still possible to have a fun-filled Halloween this year. Here are some precautions you may want to take, along with the types of candy to avoid.

Ways We Make Sure Our Products Are Allergen Free

Major Allergy Free Chocolate
  • Our manufacturing facilities are free of gluten , dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, fish, shellfish, and sesame.
  • Spangler Candy products packaged in our facility are made on dedicated manufacturing equipment.

    Guidelines For Buying Allergy

    1. No Baked Goods!

First things firstno matter the allergen, I find that bakery goods are almost ALWAYS a no-no, no matter the allergy.

Baked goods almost always have butter , wheat and eggs since these are traditional baking staples.

Those three ingredients right there are considered part of the top-8.

The top 8 foods account for 90% of all food allergies, and are therefore SUPER common. Another reason to avoid them: even if the only classroom restriction is nuts/peanutsthese are often cross-contaminated in a shared facility, and are not considered safe by many allergy parents who avoid them for fear of a risk.

So, candy is your best bet!

I also have an elementary teacher as a friend, and she agrees that when parents bring candy its best for all because there are typically no sticky hands from frosting, no crumbs strewn all over the floor and theyre individually wrapped and easier to consume. So, its a win-win!

    2. Avoid Chocolate

    Secondlyjust avoid chocolate.

Almost all chocolate has a may contain statement for peanuts or tree nuts since so many chocolate companies also manufacture chocolate that has almonds or peanuts in them. Plus, almost all chocolate has dairy in itunless its a specialty brandwhich you wont find at most typical grocers.

    3. Ask

So, while these candies will most likely workit never hurts to ask the teacher or directly to the allergy parent to make sure.

    PHEW!

In most of these situations, we do not pack these items ourselves but the retailer or a customer of ours purchases and repackages our items. Trace elements of these allergens could come into contact with our items. What Candy Can Kids With Allergies Eat

First of all, with food allergies, there are always precautions you need to take. Here are 3 simple ways to be extra safe with any allergy-free Christmas candy.

  • Be sure to read EVERY SINGLE LABEL, EVERY SINGLE TIME. Labels can change anytime and its always important to read the label before gifting any candy, whether it says allergy-free or not.

  • 2. If you are buying for a food allergy child that isnt your own, PLEASE double-check with their parents before gifting any allergy-free Christmas candy. This is so important because ingredient labels can be difficult to read and if youre not used to reading labels its very easy to make a mistake. So always ask a parent first.

    3. If your child or the child youre buying for cannot eat foods made on shared lines with their allergens, its very important to call the companies & research to ensure their candy will be safe for your child. Although these are the most allergy-friendly Christmas candy companies I know, I have not verified them by phone or asked about shared lines. Please be sure to do this if required for your family.

With that, lets get to that list of the best allergy-free Christmas candy. Keep in mind that Im not an affiliate for any of these companies, and I get no compensation for recommending them.
