Must I Stop Allergy Medications Prior To Allergy Testing
Antihistamine medications must be stopped before skin prick testing and performing a food challenge. However antihistamines do not need to be stopped before blood testing. Short-acting antihistamines such as Piriton , Ucerax , Benadryl should be stopped 48 hours before skin testing.
Long-acting antihistamines such as Claritin , Neoclarytin , Zirtek , Xyzal , Telfast need to be stopped 5 days before testing. Cough preparations for children frequently contain antihistamines and you should check for this and if they are present stop the cough preparation 48 hours before the visit.
Oral, nasal or inhaled steroid medications do not need to be stopped as they do not affect the test result. Anti-leukotrienes such as Singulair , Accolate do not need to be stopped as they do not affect the test result. If in doubt, please contact the practice.

Food allergies occur when a sensitive person eats, inhales, or comes into contact with even tiny amounts of certain foods. These reactions occur with exposure to proteins called allergens and can be very mild or may be life-threatening.
Food allergies are becoming more and more common. There has been an increase in severe food allergy cases in the last 10 years, mostly driven by peanut and tree nut allergies.
In children, the most common food allergies are:

WHY DO I NEED TO STOP SOME MEDICATIONS BEFORE AN ALLERGY TEST?
- When you are allergic to a substance, your body releases certain chemicals such as histamine. When these chemicals are released in the skin during a test, we see a small bump in the skin that is often surrounded by redness. Certain medications can decrease this response and cause allergy testing to look negative even if you do have allergies.
- Other medications can be dangerous to take if you are having an allergy test. Some medications can increase your chance of a life-threatening reaction to an allergy test or make treating a severe reaction more difficult.
- You only need to consider stopping medications if you are going to have a skin test for allergies. If your allergy test will be done with a blood draw from the vein no medications need to be stopped.
- It is important to review your list of medications with your ENT allergist in order to ensure the most accurate and safe outcome when you have your test.

So youre thinking about allergy testing. Many people wonder what this entails and what to expect. First lets review when to do testing:
- When the diagnosis of allergies is uncertain.
- When you would like to identify the offending triggers to help with avoidance measures and environmental control.
- When allergy or asthma symptoms are not controlled despite appropriate medications.
- When considering immunotherapy .
- When other related ENT problems exist that could be related to allergies. These can include chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, fluid in the middle ear, chronic ear infections, voice disturbances, asthma, or enlarged adenoids.
- When the symptoms and complications of allergies or asthma are affecting your quality of life.
When you decide with your ENT Allergist to proceed with allergy testing, you must decide on what type of testing to do. There are two basic types, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. These are skin testing and in vitro blood testing.
Skin testing involves placing allergen extracts on or just under the skin and then measuring the response to each allergen. The advantage of this method is that the results can be read immediately and treatment started promptly.
The disadvantage is that the results arent immediately available and so can require a follow-up visit to formulate the treatment plan.

If your patch test comes back positive, the best way to ease allergic contact dermatitis is to avoid the offending substance during your daily life. This may mean switching beauty products or shampoos, giving up products with certain additives in them or having a conversation with your boss about reducing exposure to the allergen at work. It will likely take a few weeks for your allergic reaction to totally subside.
In the meantime, topical steroids may ease symptoms of itchiness and redness. Be sure not to overuse them, as they have side effects if applied for long periods of time. Your allergist may also recommend a moisturizer to help soften and heal scaly skin.
Preparing For Your First Appointment
Before you start your patch test, you will need to avoid any medicines that may interfere with getting an accurate reading of allergic reaction symptoms. These typically include antihistamines, some antidepressants, some heartburn medications and herbal supplements. Your allergist should give you a list of medications to avoid during your consultation, but you can always double check by calling the doctors office if you are unsure.

In most cases, you will need to refrain from taking all medication that contains antihistamine for at least 7 days prior to your test. This is because the tester actually needs to see what you react to when tested and antihistamines will block most allergic reactions. That said, if you are taking medications for any other chronic condition such as heart problems or inhaled medications for your chest or nose, you should keep taking them as prescribed. More often than not, you may resume all medications following your skin test. Contact your allergist for their specific medication directions around testing.

1. How often do my allergies bother me?
If your allergy symptoms last longer than two weeks and keep returning, you should consider allergy testing. Typically, acute sinus and allergy problems last no more than four weeks, while chronic ones can last significantly longer eight-to-twelve weeks. Chronic allergies linger for years.
2. Does over-the-counter medication alleviate all your symptoms?
Many can simply take an OTC medication such as Benadryl or Zyrtec and be fine throughout allergy season. For others, OTC and prescription medications arent effective. Even if they do relieve your symptoms, you will have to take the medications for several years in order to keep the allergies from returning. In many cases, its more convenient, and economical, to undergo immunotherapy to permanently alleviate your symptomsand an allergy test is the first step in that process.

Its not unusual for patients to come to us seeking treatment for pet dander allergies only to discover that Fido is not the problem! Many assume that they are allergic to pollen or mold when, in actuality, it may be a completely different substance causing the problem. Its very possible that the things youre trying to avoid arent the source of your problems. An allergy test helps us isolate the core problem and prescribe the appropriate treatment.
